    1. a path through a forest, field, etc.
    2. the marks, signs, smells, etc., that are left behind by someone or something and that can often be followed

That might meet the stated definition of a "trail", but where I come from, that is a dirt road.

maybe because dragon and star are actually words capable of standing alone, while neither mael nor strom have much meaning at all in this context by themselves? that's my guess

At least ‘you’re/your’ and ‘there/their/they’re’ can be explained by the fact that they are homophones, and native speakers learn the language by hearing it rather than reading it (which most of us do, who learn it as a foreign language). Trial/trail however can’t be excused this way as they are not homophones, heck they are not even minimal pairs.

Whether we want it or not, these mistakes can and will make people assume that the one who made the mistake is a moron. I’m also triggered by ‘should’ve/should of’.

I actually disagree with the linguist. It's much more of an indication of idiocy when you mix up they're/their/there than trial/trail, because with trial/trail it could be chalked up to a typo, but there's no excusing getting the completely wrong form of they're/their/there.

Coming to the conclusion that someone is stupid based on a misspelling is a fallacy. A person can’t claim intellectual superiority while making such ridiculous assumptions about other people. Hopefully you never become an English teacher with an attitude like that.

At least someone brought it up. Now then, can we talk about Daedra and Deadra? One is a demonic being in the game, and the other isnt even a thing. Like, how fast are you typing that you type the e before the a?

It is a common misspelling. Some people tend to misread new words and then get used to the incorrect spelling. This CAN explain trial/trail, although ai/ia is not as easily misread as ea/ae. I often meet people in-game who type 'deadric' constantly instead of 'daedric', but this has been going on for years on different TES forums.
So learning to write the language is a separate skill, and spellcheck doesn't pick up these written mistakes caused by English homophones. What about "payed?"

Learning to write a language is indeed different from learning to speak a language. I don't know about your own native language, but in mine, Hungarian, people do spelling mistakes ALL THE TIME. And spell check doesn't help as much as you'd expect it to.

You'd be surprised, but 'payed' is actually a correct English word, although it's not the same as paid, it's the past tense of a special meaning of the verb 'to pay' used in nautical environments. This can explain why spell checking doesn't help with this word. Also 'paid' is irregular, so non-native speakers unsurprisingly make that mistake.

Remember that chatting in-game or on forums is a completely different scenario than chatting IRL. You don't know anything about the person on the other side, your only impression is that they make spelling mistakes, which can be attributed to different reasons. It is a fallacy, but it simply happens, as much as we don't want it to.

Also, it's very important to note WHO made the spelling mistake. If it's a non-native speaker, especially one with poor grammar, you won't judge them obviously. On the other hand, a native speaker, if adequately educated, is expected to use the correct spelling of words. In English, misspelling is more tolerated in say, Hungarian. Here, if someone makes a spelling mistake based on phonological reasons, they are seen as a big, big moron by the majority. You have to be above this, and I am, but in online environments it's still frustrating, considering the fact that English is the de facto official language online.

Fun fact: I have a colleague who is a native speaker of English and until recently he though that 'folklore' is written as 'folklaw'. Experiences like this make you tolerate more and more.
