Not "dying", yet, but as with all MMO ESO has been declining. As we go towards the end of the tunnel ZOS will try harder to squeeze cash from its player base, to make the best out of their investments. Uh oh, are we there yet?

I laugh at these threads seeming to indicate this game is dying. They have filled the forums since the month the game was released. Clearly some bad prophets and analysts involved.

At least it's gotten more entertaining with less now to steam since a graat many of us know those steam stats done mean jack. Hard to believe someone thinks they're worthy of linking.

Just FYI for anyone that thinks the steam stats have any meaning when discussing ESO, they're reflecting a small sliver of the game base that is not necessarily reflective of the entire player base. In other words, that soda bottle you just tossed into the can probably has more value.

It's been "dying" since Orsinium according to the doomsayers on the forum. Low pop MMO's like lotro are still around. As long as there's some support for the game it will stay alive.

I see people everywhere when I play so I don't think it will "die" anytime soon.

Only thing eso has on it is a bigger world and much more active combat system......yea...

Oh xiv has better pvp too. Not great pvp, but hey, at least it works and doesnt require to restart the game every 10 to 20 mins.

Look at Swtor, it finally server merged into mega servers that's a bad sign for that game since it had plenty of servers before I know ESO has mega servers but they had them since the start

This happened because the population plummeted when the dev team decided to only focus on story content for an entire year, following the logic that the "majority" play story content. surprise surprise, when they did that, a massive chunk of the population left. Why? Because most people want variety. Luckily swtor has a new creative lead so they are getting a few players here and there back by releasing content for everyone. Pvp, story pve, endgame pve, etc.

Story content for a year didn’t really do it. Not alone anyway. They went that route and very casual and alt friendly; then ripped it all out and introduced command XP. Basically made an artificial grind for filler as they cannot even release a full raid in a patch. Have to do it 1 boss at a time.

Obviously there was a lot more to it that built up over time, but the story centric approach really was a huge factor. All my raid, pvp and versatile guilds went from hundreds to nill within weeks.

This. This here is delusional. The only thing FF14 does better than ESO is endgame PVE, and even that is arguable.

So if anyone here had to guess, which has the highest population? PC? PS4? Xbox?

    My guess = PS4.

Why? Because PC players have other MMORPGs to choose from. Xbox players strike me as being more into sports and Call of Doody games.

    Is this correct?

I believe the xbox actually has the biggest pvp population.

You put way too much into what Steam and githyp.com but you forget one big thing many old timers (player) like me that have been with ESO since beta or at start did not use steam to buy game most of us did by the game from ZoS so those number you look at are very very wrong.

Besides if the game where dying do you really thing ZoS would make the 10 Million Stories Sweepstakes thing??

Someone spending time in ESO forums saying FF14 is a significantly better game that ESO is the one trolling.

Besides the obvious reasons, why would that person be here if he liked FF so much more?

    Agree!^ This!^^^^
Why do people use Steam as a guide to player base? ESO wasn't even available for Steam till 4 months AFTER launch! And I have NO idea what "GitHyp" is. Never heard of it, and no it is not a valid method of player base numbers either.
Have seen these "ESO Going to Die" threads since beta, then launch, at X-mas 2014, at 1st anniversary, etc.. 3.5 years later it is still going strong.
    My example?
I got on this morning just to see. PC/NA.....6:30AM CST...... Loaded in Davon's Watch, Players running around doing writs, crafting, looking for help with dolmans, etc...
Vivec AvA, AD and EP 3 bars, DC 2 bars..almost full campaign at 6:45 AM.
Vvardenfell, Vivec City, lots of folks running around. Went to do my "Treasure Chest Farm" and peeps out in wild running around.
Craglorn, 7AM.... Belkarth had LOTS of folks there. Went to do my "Nirncrux Farm Run" and couldn't as there were peeps doing them already.
I play everyday and at all hours. No the game is not dyeing.
It's interesting how the starters of these topics almost never make a second post in their own thread.

one comment in the second link sums up my answer to your post pretty much:

This is a load of crap. I've not experienced an infinite loading screen, disconnect, or random crash in months. I'm running on a fairly outdated rig and get 50+ FPS at all times. And asserting that the devs are going to abandon the game when they've just released their third expansion in under 6 months is just ridiculous.

There is "A Thing" wrong with the game right now. People are running in circles in a panic, monsters are behind every shadow. Doom is in the air. Eventually, "A Thing" will get fixed, people go back to playing, except for a few who will cling to The Doom, looking for the next "Thing".

Those sources are not good representations of ESO population numbers.
ESO has been doing pretty well and has been continuously gaining more. Better quality and higher population after a pretty quick turn-around.
I don't think it'll ever grow out of WoW's shadow simply due to how it able to remain popular after 13 years since release. It has history and dedicated fans.
Here's to hoping that ESO lasts just as long.

People seem to compare these numbers still to the "sky is the limit-WoW" days, where there were indeed over 200 mil subscribers. But there is no way to monitor the exact amount of people playing, unless you got insights in actual server-data. So unless you go online on every platform, 24 hours for a whole month and count the people online (wich is impossible) then stop saying a game is dying.

(That being said, I think most of the franchises are indeed dying because there is to much pay for dlc's going on.)
