Would a regular HDD help improve load times or should I pick up a SSD?

With the Xbox One X, The Elder Scrolls Online runs very close to the equivalent of Ultra settings on PC. This means that the game has never looked better on Xbox. Here's a breakdown of some of the new features and improvements coming very soon:
Native 4K resolution
Upgraded shadows with Screen Space Ambient Occlusion
Upgraded water reflections
Increased view distance
....."
I appreciate the fact that they did this, but my fear is that by increasing these settings we lessen the improvement to be had in the area of FPS and performance. I would rather have kept the same graphical quality and instead boosted FPS and stability. But, maybe we still get both... we'll see tomorrow I guess.
Sorry but those of us upgrading our xbox one experience just like those who pay $200-$800 to upgrade their PC experience aren't spending that for only FPS. Its illogical to improve your video card and CPU this much for the game to look the same.
Also higher FPS isn't the issue on xbox one and never was other than in a few sparse situation which applies to all platforms. Sorry but a lot of people would not agree with your preference however, you can just stay on the xbox one s and use an SSD drive with update 16 performance improvements for much cheaper.
"higher FPS isn't the issue on xbox one and never was"
Uhh ...
I run well under 10 FPS in Trials and in Cyrodiil. I'm not even being hyperbolic when I say 1-2 FPS is not uncommon. FPS is absolutely an issue on xbox.
You may need to contact support, not joking as FPS drops but you comment that its well under 10 FPS consistently in Trials and Cyrodil.
That's not normal....
I'm on xbox One S now but that's been just a recent change, I've been on xbox one using an external HD, not SSD just a normal external 3.0 USB and am not having FPS that low consistently.
I did trials a lot in the past and that wasn't the experience, its most often 30 and sometimes iit drops to 25-ish
NOW one of the trials has performance issues never fixed but that's only one.
Cyrodil and IC haven't been a major issue either in terms of 10 FPS, now its not a full 30 FPS all the time but never 10 and below consistently.
Check and make sure you're good on your end as there is something else going bad. Hope you get it worked out
Nah. I don't know when this "in the past" was, but since HotR Trials have been absolutely abysmal. I saw you comment on DJMuscleBoy's post this morning that included a video of the Triplets fight, and that performance is the same performance you'll see on Rakkhat, on most bosses in AA, on Ozara and The Serpent, on Ra'Kotu, and elsewhere.
I get slightly better performance on my X1S, but the frame rate in Trials is just as bad. I spend probably 15-20 hours a week in Trials, run them basically every day with several different raid guilds, and everyone in every group I run with experiences the exact same issues. We all have to force-quit ESO and restart the game at some point, which improves FPS dramatically for a short time and then it slowly degrades back to flip-book quality.
TBH I don't think you know what you're talking about. Not trying to be rude but if you're not doing Trials right now, you have no idea what performance is like in Trials.
Oh o k well looks like you got all the answers and got it figured out.
PvP is no different in how it was for us on PC prior to me moving to Xbox. On PC they’ve made changes that can’t apply to console but it’s been a known issue prior to console release. The game was built to be a problem but when you say your FPS are 10 and below....constantly....I’m telling you that’s something you can resolve. Its not a solid 30 but above 10 consistently is possible.
It’s one trial that’s an issue right now and the past was just before Morrowind and the two weeks after in terms of the last time doing trials.
All else is just the game and Xbox one performance. I️ play on a PC rarely too and it’s better in terms of cpu but that’s cause PC allows many different hardware builds.
The realistic solution is Xbox one x or quit.
Shrug it’s thats simple at this point if FPS is a major concern.
You haven't run Trials in five months, so why do you think you've got anything useful to say about Trials performance?
You saw the video of the Triplets fight already--that's how Trials play right now on XB1. Across the board. This is not a *me* problem. You can see the other folks in this thread, including some of the top players on this platform, saying the same thing. I've got Band chats full of people who've quit the game, moved to PC, or are on the verge of doing one or the other.
Framerates below 10 FPS are absolutely par for the course in a lot of Trials fights right now. This is not hyperbole. Like I said previously, if you haven't been running Trials since HotR, then you have no idea what you're talking about. Performance degraded significantly with that update.
You know sometimes people on the forums have access to things prior to others. Maybe I’m trying to help but I️ see you’re all set.
Don’t worry about it man. You’re good as you suggest.
Happy. Gaming
Ok just tested out the game with and without ssd. Load screen into deshaan without 1m12. Load screen with ssd 19sec.
Thank you soooooo much for this information! I love you big time right now.

I'm guessing that's on the old Xbox One and not the newer Xbox One X? Would be interesting to see how much an SSD helps on the X1X.

I can confirm that an SSD makes a HUGE difference! Load times that were an average of 1 min. 10 secs. are now 20 secs.
I ported to the Vivec City wayshrine (the one inside the city) and the bridge up to the temple was immediately visible (there were times when I'd travel up that bridge while it was invisible). All player characters were immediately visible - no black shapes. I sprinted on my mount through the city and there were no texture load problems (most of the time, I'd go several feet and then the building started to look muddy/blurry). No crashing! Rode all the way to the crafting area and no black shapes (usually, it would be a mass of black shapes).
Ported to Orsinium - never noticed the statue next to the wayshrine, as It never loaded right away. Rode all the way across the bridge - the bridge texture wasn't blurry and there was no load screen. And, I could see the textures on all the buildings that were normally a muddy mess.
Next stop, the infamous mud town of Abah's Landing. I could never get more than a few feet in town - walking slowly (no mount) before everything just turned into a blurry mess and crashed. I played through TG for the first time during the anniversary event, and I hated that town. Could never see it clearly and it crashed ALL THE TIME. I was there a couple weeks ago to purchase some items from the Achievement Vendor and immediately crashed when interacting with them. Last night, sprinted through on my mount and saw the city as it was meant to be seen. All textures loaded, no black figures - brilliant!
Get an SSD! You won't be sorry.
Also, ESO on the X is beautiful. My husband commented that it's very close to how it looks on PC. Granted, FPS is only 30, so it wasn't as smooth as PC, but draw distance was great. I was already running the game with HDR, so it wasn't such a noticeable difference in terms of clarity/color, but it just looked better.
But, if you're wanting better performance from ESO, buy an SSD and save your money on an X. Buy an X if you want better graphics.

Is your SSD USB 3.0?
Yep, and it's 500GB
EDIT - I don't do trials, PvP, or dungeons, so I can't speak to whether the SSD will help with that. I did do a dolmen, though it wasn't highly populated, and didn't have any lag. I'm going to try some public dungeons, as I had done one Sunday night, and the lag with mobs was noticeable and there weren't a lot of other players around.

I am looking at buying one as my X will arrive from Walmart next Monday. Order on Aug 21st. Receive a week after its release, but whatever. Thank for the info. Wanted to be sure I got 3.0 if it was needed.

Yep. Seems like that is going to be my next purchase as well. Sucks that we are spending hundreds of dollars to make the game merely play-able but I don't even care at this point. I just want these issues to go away.
In preparation of my XB1X being delivered today I purchased a 256 GB SSD USB 3.0 device. Yesterday(11/12/17) morning I moved ESO and just ESO over to this device. Loaded up the game on my original XBOX 1 and I have to say the improvements to the game play with this change are astounding.
No more waiting on areas to load, no more waiting on black shadows of players to load. Jumping between areas is much faster with very little load time. No more waiting on quest givers and areas of the game to load so I can move forward with a quest or story line.
Some things I could not do as a console player pre SSD
-Sprint with horse through any part of Elden root. This was almost always a game drop. If it did not drop I had to wait at least 30 seconds for the game area to load or I hit a load screen. I was doing this as a test yesterday with no issues, no load screens, no unloaded areas.
-Do anything but walk very slowly through Orsinum. Tested this area and this is a much changed experience for me. I was running through with my horse and experience no load screens or game kicks.
-Inside Elden Root crafting area. This area pre SSD was a huge issues for me and I found myself having to avoid the area period. I was able to sprint and do whatever I wanted in this area and had no issues.
I recommend all XBOX players to do this upgrade to a external SSD. I cannot get over how much better this game is now and I have not even tried it on the XB1X yet.
