in-game race threads on ESO official forums

Lately, there has been an outburst of racist threads on forums. Comments that promote slavery are pretty common as well.
I can't say I like all ESO races, because that is not true, but there should be a line somewhere.
We all spent money on ESO, many of us are ESO+ subscribers, and also do support the game by buying crown store related items.
So, why do we have to deal with racist comments and worse based on what race we chose our characters to be?
Is money we spent on ESO less worth than money of these "in game" racists?

Or put any mention of racism into the role-playing forum so that every single post of that nature is considered role-playing. That might irk some of the racists who are very anti-RP, but c'est la vie.

Liking or disliking a race in a videogame is not racism.

I'll make all the jokes I want about Argonian skin shoes or a Khajiit fur rug, but at the end of the day none of it really matters, because they are fictional characters in a fictional world.

And if you think that has any bearing on the real world, you must also believe that killing people in a game is tantamount to killing people in real life.

    So much this ^^

My behavior in/about a video game in no way reflects my behavior in my life. The racism and slavery is in ESO lore so when people make jokes about lizard shoes and khajiit rugs, it doesn't bother me.

    Seriously??

It's a game, an MMORPG, following lore.

Trying to blow things out of proportion and make real world connotations is a reach. Unless you are joking or in some way are role playing, but it doesn't read that way.

Next will be a poll saying Cyrodiil promotes war, and Nightblades are terrorists I mean comon.

If you think so, try making racist or even slavery related comments about Redguards. And then, when they ban you, do tell them it was "game only" thing that has nothing to do with irl.

I tried to explain it yesterday and I will try it one more time:

The Elder Scrolls lore is riddled with slavery, racism, murder, betrayal and all kind of things deemed negative in the real world. Actually most fantasy/ science fiction/ or whatever lore is. Some races are despict as (former) "slave races". And at the events of ESO, Argonians and Khajiit might be free, but thousand years in the future (TES 3: Morrowind) they are slaves again.

That's not what people make up, that's simply the lore. Making fun of that might annoy you but since in-game lore has nothing to do with reality, it doesn't even give you a hint on someone's real personality. The "racist users" could be role playing, discussion the lore or simply trying to troll you.

You said yesterday that someone would get banned in seconds if they talk about Redguards the way they do about beast races.
First off, I understand where this is coming from because it's far more easy to step over the border that seperates lore from reality when you use real life terms like the N or the C word refering to coloured people than it is to talk about totally fictional races that have no inspiration in real life. Also I don't think you will get to suffer any consequences if you keep it lore based.

E.G. it's one thing to call redguard players real-life descriminating terms. But it's a whole other thing to say Redguards are sandcrawling warmongering invaders from yokuda.

What you need to realize is that people can sepperate reality from fiction. You can very well play a grumpy dark elf slaver or an arrogant high elf that's inherently racist but be a non-racist non-slaving guy/gal in reality.

But on the other hand, if people really call you out personally on things you do in game, I would report them.
But that goes both ways, doesn't it? ;)

    Spot on @Chilly-McFreeze

People seem to want to get offended these days. Unreal.

It's a game, we talk in game terms, in lore terms and come here / play for fun and a distraction.

Getting heavy about it and dragging this type of conversation around doesn't help, it creates connections people weren't even thinking of.

Reporting this thread as whilst some great replies its not actually going to help your point OP its counter productive.

The University of Minnesota did some really interesting work using people's behavior in RP games to assess their personality and possibly pathology. It was very cool - in that people with issue were less successful hiding them in an RPG game than in a formal interview.

Just an odd point of information.

Tenesi Faryon of Telvanni - Dunmer Sorceress who deliberately sought sacrifice into Cold Harbor to rescue her beloved.
Hisa Ni Caemaire - Altmer Sorceress, member of the Order Draconis and Adept of the House of Dibella.
Broken Branch Toothmaul - goblin (for my goblin characters, I use either orsimer or bosmer templates) Templar, member of the Order Draconis and persistently unskilled pickpocket
Mol gro Durga - Orsimer Socerer/Battlemage who died the first time when the Nibenay Valley chapterhouse of the Order Draconis was destroyed, then went back to Cold Harbor to rescue his second/partner who was still captive. He overestimated his resistance to the hopelessness of Oblivion, about to give up, and looked up to see the golden glow of atherius surrounding a beautiful young woman who extended her hand to him and said "I can help you". He carried Fianna Kingsley out of Cold Harbor on his shoulder. He carried Alvard Stower under one arm. He also irritated the Prophet who had intended the portal for only Mol and Lyris.
    ***
Order Draconis - well c'mon there has to be some explanation for all those dragon tattoos.
House of Dibella - If you have ever seen or read "Memoirs of a Geisha" that's just the beginning...
Nibenay Valley Chapterhouse - Where now stands only desolate ground and a dolmen there once was a thriving community supporting one of the major chapterhouses of the Order Draconis

    Groupfinder:
The worst part is when it finally puts you in a group, your healer turns into a werewolf, your tank has 14k HP and the dps is heavy armor, using a restro staff and a two handed sword on the backbar. Then comes the 15 minute penalty before the cycle starts anew.

    Rulz of Morrowind:
    • The first rule of Morrowind is: You do not talk about Morrowind.
    • The second rule of Morrowind is: You do not talk about Morrowind.
    • Third rule of Morrowind: Someone yells NDA stuff, uploads images, streams, the game is over.
    • Fourth rule: only invited players can test.
    • Fifth rule: one invite at a time, fellas.
    • Sixth rule: crying or bashing on pts.
    • Seventh rule: NDA will go on as long as they have to.
    • And the eighth and final rule: If this is your first invite at Morrowind, you have to play.

I have two Khajiit characters: former slave, who was kidnapped as a cub and then liberated by his Dunmer masters in EP, and his mother, who was always free Khajiit and set on a journey from AD to find her missing son. One is a Master Thief, the other is a Warden-Druidish-Witch. Soo, am I racist by creating my Khajiit as a slave and a thief? Oh, and a Master Angler, 'cos, you know, cats love fish - another stereotype :o
Also, I had a dumb, bulky Redguard DK with a huge, curved sword, YNWM ;) And a sneaky Argonian assassin.
And I love them all, which doesn't stop me to make "racist" jokes about my Khajiit and Argonian friends, and my Bosmer, who sometimes wants to eat them all, and my lazy Altmer who is above everything and everybody, and my always angry Dunmer.
But my favourite character is my Orc - big, tanky Master Crafter who is the most gentle and goodhearted of them all. He is often turned down and laughed upon by strangers, but loved by my guildies :) I don't mind it, I know it's only a roleplay.
I know there are some "bad" comments in the topic like that one, but I'm sure they are 99% just lore based, harmless roleplay. The other 1%, which may be written by really racist ppl hiding under the lore, are best left ignored or reported to moderators. Do not feed the trolls by making topics like this one.

As a huge fan of Argonians and Khajiits, I am... not in the slightest bit bothered, offended, upset or whatever other adjective you wish to use. I tend to ignore most of the silly comments because I find them immature, not because I find them racist.

I'll go further: I simply don't care if others don't share my interest in particular races. In fact, I quite like playing a race that has been the subject of slavery, is ridiculed by so many because of appearance, is so divisive, attracts such negativity and is so very different from the others for so many reasons. I don't care if others won't perceive them as 'cool'. Embrace the differences in the races, have fun playing them, absorb and enjoy the established lore and the often fractious interrelationships and let those who feel the desperate need to reaffirm their preferences to their heart's content. But please don't moderate sensible discussion or light-heartedness in the forums as a result.

Now, where's my mud hut, I need to go lie down...
