I think that might have been the original plan, but it was changed to make he dye exclusive to the Dye Stamps and they didn't change the name.
It is surely a shame.Just so that everyone knows, my Altmer still can't have black hair. About a dozen of Altmer NPCs in the game have black hair. Just saying.

Aerindel, Altmer stormcaller: After extensive research, I've come to the conclusion that doing the thing would be a waste of resources.

No way. A one-time-only use dye for $2 is totally a bargain! I mean, you'll never want to change the color of your armor again, let alone upgrade it at some future point, so that's totally $2 that's never going to be wasted in your life! Especially if you end up not liking it outside of the preview window! On the one and only character you use it on!
ZOS, with their finger on the pulse of their community. (Did I say on the pulse? I meant up their ass.)

Bossdonut✭✭✭✭✭Dye stamps are about the dumbest thing I've ever seen. UO got it right with anniversary reward dyes for long time players.
They could at least have exclusive reusable dyes for crowns to use on your actual gear.
That would make too much sense though. These devs really are on borrowed time, aren't they?0 -

Make a dyestamp cost < 50$ (1 day work)
It's only RGB code. The most expensive part is the picture and adding product to the market itself with procedures, but with a good graphist and Photoshop, it takes only few minutes for pict.
There is already hundreds of dyestamps ingame, so believe me, they won't be removed.
