    8,000, not 7,000.
    http://steamcharts.com/app/306130

And before 1 Tamriel it seemed to average 2-3k.
But then again this could emphasize the shift to a more casual gamer. Being that more are playing via steam.
Before the leveling restrictions were removed, Cadwell's silver and gold zones were dead. I would be surprised when I encountered someone outside of one of the cities.

ESO's population is spread out in a very weird way. It is focused in one area.

    - PvP is doing poorly. Very poorly.
    - Endgame PvE (Vet trials) are doing poorly

These two are a bit dependent on your server, but more or less are the same on all servers in that the are doing very bad atm compared to how they were in the past.
Numerous balance/performance issues hurt the PvP population tremendously.
The removal of BoE gear/Insane RNG Gear grinds/Morrowind sustain nerfs/trial performance/huge net gold loss of running trials all hurt the endgame PvE population tremendously.

    HOWEVER

Casual PvE (questing, normal/base game vet dungeons, etc) is doing very well. You can find players all over Tamriel - not just in new DLC zones. These players also provide ZOS with the most Crown Store purchases which incentivizes them to focus on that population far more than the other two which are doing badly atm. Can;t tell you how many low CP players I have seen with Skeletal mounts and every other recent Crown Store cosmetic.

......Then they try to progress in PvE and get shot down by the current endgame PvEers who don't want to carry them, and due to the lack in population there are almost zero progressing groups that take new players and teach them how to L2P. ZOS provides zero tutorials to help either. That system doesn't help itself, but that's a different story....

ESO's population spiked up quite a lot once Morrowind launched but calmed down a few months since then. More of the endgame PvEers/PvPers left, but they were replaced by like 5 new players each. It really depends what era of ESO you want to compare it to in order to tell if ESO is doing "well" or not. These days it is doing pretty well, but endgame PvE and PvP both need performance enhancements or those two area will get even worse than they are now. Game performance is ESO's #1 issue by a lot.

Well, I know I stopped because I spent so much time grinding for gear all for it to be nerfed and have to go through all that again.

Not only has the gear been nerfed but traits as well, so all that time in VMA trying to get sharpened weapons was for nothing. I refuse to do all of that again.

Even in PVP 10 people on the other team is considered attacking a keep is considered a large amount of people. by people in zone.

Many crafters moved to Vivec City, because the bank is outside, and consumable crafting stations are closer. The laggers spamming spells on the rock are still in Rawl'kha, though.

Vvardenfell has moderate traffic; any tomb full of urns or city with pockets to pick has people around even late at night.

PVP currently has 3x as many campaigns as it needs, so everyone's very spread out; ZOS said they're going to adjust that.
This, anyway steam probably show an decent indicator on number of player at who is online even if just an faction of players.
It has obviously been an slowdown since Morrowind, Morrowind also spread players more out and this probably has more visible impact.
Grinding just make you go in circles.
Asking ZoS for nerfs is as stupid as asking for close air support from the death star.

I subscribed for a long time, at a time when you had to sub to play. The 59.99 entry fee was like the anty in a pocker game. No sub means you were locked out.

I did that for months, dont kill my fun man. I mean even then, people were saying the game is dying, and we laughed at them.

Its changed a lot, but its not dead, not even close. LOL

PS4 seams to have a good population still.

This. Can't speak for at other platforms but ps4 NA has some very crowded city's. Rawlkha was replaced by vivec city but the three capitals and especially craglorn are always poppin.

I have noticed pvp population went down a whole lot. Even before midyear mayhem there was some sort of que to get into vivec. And usually 2 bars for each alliance on shor. Midyear mayhem was 100+ ques for vivec. And now I rarely have to wait to get into vivec, and shor never goes over one bar!

The pvp in this games what keeps me around. I really hope we get a fix for the performance issues because the concept behind cyrodiil is way to great to allow to crash and burn.

As far as I know zones are instanced (so you might be in a secondary Rawl'kha instance as some sort of overflow) and - to be honest - if PvP in this game loses players it can only be a good thing for PvE (which I play mostly). No more PvE nerfs and basic game mechanic changes in terms of game stability for PvP or PvP balance.

Imho for PvE I don't see any remarkable alternative on the MMO market in compare to ESO right now.

The new people who joined during one tamriel and homestead noticed end game is a mess in this game.

Ppv with its infinite replay value is a catastrophe plagued by cheaters, uneven populations (too many campaigns, night capping and so on) and an artifical meta hunt. It's basicly free endless content which barely needs to be maintained by zos but it takes them months to react and the problems change by then already.

There is simple no point running dungeons 1000 times while normal trials are a joke and vet trials for the 0.1%.
Time reward ratio is sometimes just facepalm worthy in this game.
Huge performance gaps between between weaker and the better players make new pve content hard to balance. Some data about the financial succes of their dlc dungeons would be really nice to release. I bet horns of the reach got only a fraction of sales than imperial city if we exclude eso plus people.
Instead of lowering the gap, they nerf content which is nothing more than a band aid fix. People will still lose at the same mechanics or npcs as before unless you turn them harmless. Burning thought mechanics shouldn't even be possible in the first place.
A better time reward ratio would also help to keep people motivated to keep running mechanics probaly instead of being burned out after doing it 500 times. Some useless single piece of purple gear is not a worthy reward.

The population on NA PC has definitely been dropping off steadily since the initial spike from Morrowind. All of my guilds have less and less players logging in regardless of time zones. Out of 500 guild members, I used to see on average close to 75 ppl on almost constantly, now it hardly ever gets above 25. It's usually below that.

I think players have lost faith in ZOS ability to balance this game and are sick and tired of nerfs every patch. When I first started playing this game I thought it would have a very long life cycle but now unfortunately i think it will die much sooner than i had hoped.

As I write this there are 11,416 playing ESO on Steam. However, comparatively few PC players use it for ESO especially the veterans as it wasn't an option at launch, and two-thirds of the playerbase aren't on the PC in the first place.

Is there a statistic for this?
I'm just saying that PC being one of three options doesn't mean each option is 1/3 of the player base.

Well they screwed the game up with the Morrowind Patch. Homestead was the best patch. I am sick of managing resources, I want enjoy the content and to be able to do a rotation without heavy attacking on all classes. They nerfed Magplars into the ground in PVE DPS which was my favorite class. They need to revert most of the changes. Go back to Homestead and make the whole game fun again.

But it will spike once the new dlc comes out for a month or two then it will die down til the next dlc.

Exactly. Relative numbers are relative. So if it's being witnessed that steam only has 70 % of logins now compared to a couple of months ago, it can be assumed that that reflects pretty well the overall activitiy (also non-steam). At least as long as steam hasn't done something particular to upset their players and make them abandon it, it's pretty safe to say that it's ESO.

Not saying the numbers are right. Just some thoughts on the relevance of them if they are.

    I definately notice the reduction.

It seems that the people who do not wish to see it never will, and those who simply take things as is tend to come to a consensus it is slowing down.

Or perhaps the people who are determined to see a reduction aren't willing to acknowledge that there are more places to go and more things to do compared with earlier in the year. A new zone, two new dungeons, a new form of PvP, all these things mean people being more spread out.

    I stand by my statement.
