Why are skill lines "hidden" now?

    Isn't looking into your skill sheet out of character anyway? So why does it matter for RP?

    Honestly? It was just an personal assumption that's not necessarily correct.
    Truth is it would still be nice to be able to unlearn any particular skill line of one's choosing.
    Reading book shelves will open a skill line for whatever book you happened to read anyways.

    Hiding skill lines was perhaps the most meaninglessly annoying thing ZoS has ever done to me.

    So if you wear 5/1/1 on a new character it wont level all 3 skill lines?

    If you wear 5/1/1 of armor it will level all three lines, but it won't unlock them. In order for those skill lines to show up on your character you have to unlock them by equipping 3 armor pieces of that weight, at which point the skill line will appear with your accumulated experience. New characters can start wearing light armor and getting experience for it before they have collected three pieces to unlock the skill line. This sort of makes sense, since no one needs to put skill points into passives in an armor line at low levels.

    However, I believe the upcoming change to armor skills is that in order for a character to use the skill associated with the armor type, that character will have to be wearing 5 pieces of that armor type. Hence the wailing and gnashing of teeth from tanks wearing heavy armor Tava's Blessing no longer being able to use the medium armor skill Evasion for the proc from the dodge chance.

    It will level but the skill line won't appear until you wear three pieces at one time.

    So in your example all would level but only one skill line would be visible.

    This is basically my thoughts on the matter as a returning player when I created a new char, -- Huh, interesting, simpler, you probably have to use the skills to unlock --- then it pretty much had no further real impact on how I played as the skill lines naturally appeared as I progressed.

    As a new player I can see how it would be confusing or really vague but really, why are old players having such a problem with this? I didn't know about it before I resubbed, I didn't read about it when I casually skimmed over patch notes for the latest changes, but I had almost no problem with this with almost no info beforehand, and I usually am one of the first to have problems with things that no one else seems to have problems with.

    As a casual player I was satisfied that at one point I had a char max level and near max crafting with almost all motifs and I pretty much lost interest. Then ESO discovered DLC's and now my main is just a wanabe and I am happily pulled back into the game.

    A lot of businesses focus on "growth" over retention of customers. So they invent marketing & changes to their offering focused on people who don't buy/use their product or service. That's why Fried Chicken places push wraps, and sports change the rules to speed up the game.
    They ask folks who hate them what they don't like, then try to fix that "problem".

    The gamble is that we will just complain on the forum, new users will ask questions, and the whatever% of people who took one look at the skill lines and were put off will now buy.

    it's still stupid tho

    on some builds i wear 5/1/1 and max the passives out for the light and heavy armour skill lines, as it gives a slight benefit even wearing 1 piece.

    I never even seen this change, i wonder do those bonuses still carry over and why would ZoS make it awkward to do this considering the undaunted passives state you have to wear 5/1/1 to activate said passive.

    This only affects new characters. If you created your character before Morrowind all skill trees are still unlocked and visible.

    Part of the problem I've had with it is that I have Alt-itis so bad I need a support group. I create a lot of new characters to try out different things, and so I've gone through the whole unlocking skill lines thing multiple times since Morrowind dropped.

    Deliberately unlocking skill lines is an annoyance. I like to see all my options, especially since my character may require plenty of options. That means deliberately equipping and killing something with every weapon. That means deliberately collecting and equipping 3 piece of each type of armor. That means unlocking all the other skill lines just so I can see and remember what all my options are.

    Oh, and all the information on how to do that now pops up in a stream of information the moment you walk into Seyda Neen if you skip the tutorial quest. I'm not surprised that many players didn't notice or didn't read about the changes and were totally confused.

    Finally, I've fielded plenty of questions from new players about "So...I'm stuck with this greatsword forever?" or "Is there only the one armor type?" that really could be averted with the old system of having the skill lines visible.

    So as a veteran player, my reasons for not liking the change to hide skill lines are that it adds a series of annoying steps to starting a new character in order to unlock the skill lines that I want to be visible and that I still see new players utterly confused by it and I have to explain how the new system works to them anyway.

    Problem is if you read a skill book it unlocks the skill line and you can't hide it again.

    This is the most ridiculous thing I have read regarding roleplaying.

    As an avid roleplayer I do not get out my books and remove the pages not relevant to my current character and I do not remove the skills that I do not use from my character sheet.

    Roleplaying isn't about what is happening behind the scenes in the menus but how you are interacting with the world around you.
