Should Blocking be Directional?

I would think anything considered a projectile would still get granted Block privilege, in that regard.

The trouble would come from three things:
    1. The extra directional calculations involved to determine if something came from in front or behind (assuming 180 degree block)
    2. The extra damage calculation accordingly.
    3. The situations where you are surrounded by mobs (bad as a tank, worse as a non-tank) and would inevitably take more damage from the attacks behind.

Read 1h/s passives . Almost all are related to blocking . The reason 1h/s users are tanky is because they block longer and better . There is no tankiness bonus apart from that . You just get some armor from the shield itself and that is almost nothing when you take diminishing returns into consideration .

If you want to make blocking almost useless (I say this because seems like you are not very familiar with tanking in PvE) , you need to give the player some serious passive protection to endure the incoming damage .

While all the passives that is not related to blocking 1h/s gives as passive is 5% Weapon Damage and increased Bash damage ; other weapons have a lot of increase damage passives that doesn't require specific actions like blocking . If 1h/s would give passive tankiness without needing to block , I would be somewhat ok with this change but looking at 1h/s passives and seeing they only increase my block efficiency , I must say no to this .

For example , Dual Wield passive gives me a lot of offense without requiring any special condition . Just having a weapon is enough . Two-Handed the same . Bow simply gives flat damage boost if ranged and critical . You don't need to do anything , it is just there . Let's not even start with the Destruction Staff passives . That 8% damage boost passive is maybe the strongest passive in the game .

So , if this change happens , I will spend stamina only to reduce damage from the frontal attacks and everyone who is only as smart as a fish will just go behind me and make my weapon of choice useless . That will leave me with a very serious choice to make . Who should kill me ? Guy who is already behind me or should I turn so the other guy kills me ?

You need to come up with more detailed suggestions to make this kind of huge gamechanger propose be somewhat logical . Even though the real life logic wants this change to happen , this is not real life . Game in it's currect state , won't work with this change . I am saying this as a tank player who does PvE and PvP a lot . Whoever voted yes , doesn't look at this poll from all directions and/or doesn't know the game in all aspects . And you , creator of this poll , saying that we could use damage shields while tanking axes proves that .

You got to remember that they make their butt cheeks really tight while blocking, 360 degree protection. :D

    1) Yeah, if it caused too mucha lack of performance it would tank the concept.
    2) Again, agreed
    3) Sure, but I think this would add in another layer of depth into the game. Not only being aware of the 'Red', but enemies as well.

I want it to just work period. I don't know how many times I have blocked something to have my character freeze and the monster, boss or whatever just pounds me like I made no attempt at all to block.

    1) Very Punny.
    3) Again, any kind of desync/disconnect/lag would lead to nothing but wipes and frustration.

The game simply isn't built to handle that level of interaction.

'Simple' changes are often not so simple, and the rebalancing and passive changes that would be required, as @Liofa indicated, would be phenomenal.

Well, how bout sturdy trait? I can tell the significant difference while using at least a few and I am not even mentioning using entire 8 sturdy pieces.

Some of u might not remember but 2 years ago there were literally nothing like tank problem existed. People who were running tank builds could't either sustain or deal noticeable damage. Well, I guess it was casual unfriendly or something, it required skill after all.

Now? Sustain is more than enough to block for long time. Can they hit u hard tho? Well... Yup.

Yes, but not for tanks. If this ability is available for anyone it should be tanks. Even then it should be an implicit ability (ie they just get it without having to spend points on it)

All things you talked about are related to armor . Sturdy is not applies to shields . And ''hitting hard'' happened after the change they made to Heavy Armor , removing Bracing and introducing Wrath . Then they made different heavy armor sets that covers the lack of damage viable again like Ravager . Introduced new sets like 7th Legion .

Things you say are about Heavy Armor and armor traits , nothing to do about 1h/s which is what the thread is all about . There is no change happened to 1h/s that make 1h/s users hit harder than before .

    Stay with the topic .

Maybe direct melee damage attacks could do more damage to a blocking person from behind, but other than that there's to many lag, AoEs etc to make it that way.

Anyway in this case I'm pretty sure zos will NEVER change it...

As in: If I have my shield raised in front of me, and I get struck from behind, should that attack be reduced in damage?

no it should not, directional buffs / debuffs are at the mercy of lag and latency, you should always avoid these bonuses in any game if at all possible.

What I understood from ur post is that the 1&S is the only source of blocking cost reduction. Maybe I got it wrong, I am not English guy anyhow, then sorry.

No because there are some fights that would require to much movement imo.

Thinking axes on the mage after 4 axes. Really easy to tank but it's possible to have two heavy attack at the same time. If they're not near each other the tank would get stunned and will lose agro on all.

Even shield sized doesn't matter for blocking. Nor can a tank intercept projectiles or gap closers intended for another target even if they travel through the tank's body.

Physics is out the window altogether.

A tank can't intercept a gap closer, but there is a armor set that lets you intercept projectiles intended for another within a certain range.

    rr7kqhx.png

You have a chance to intercept projectiles. (In an otherwise terrible set.) But that's just an RNG proc, not any kind of physics based play. The set doesn't enable you to dive in front of your squishy healer to block that bird spam for them.

Would this kind of play be fun? Sure. But that's just not this game.

In a game where snipes and frags travel around corners, there's no player collision, destro ults go through walls, ceilings and floors, sorc pets hide inside rocks, and gap closers snare you so they land but an NPC eclipse cast *after* you cast toppling charge you will CC you.

... I'm not sure I'd pick on block as the one thing needing be physics based.

^^^ doesn't need any more explanation than that lol
