I am so tired of losing bounties I cannot afford to keep paying because some dipbleep left stealable loot right in front of an NPC I need to talk to. It's annoying as bleep and I don't want to have to install YET ANOTHER addon to do what you could do in the game. PLEASE. I will take full blame for accidental Ultimates in the marketplace but ffs help prevent me from stealing when I'm not trying to!

Isn't there an option to not auto-loot stolen items? I am quite sure there is. If you click E twice...well...

Edit: Oh you meant the items that are lying around at the merchants. Yes, those don't have a prompt like containers have. I agree with you therefore.

This would be needed, it's very annoying to pay bounties or be chased for "crappy steel sword" next to the merchant.

Though if you are on pc there is an addon that do that "no accidental stealing" iirc, that gives also the option the user above mentioned about sneaking, though I fully agree this should be an in-game setting option.

I edit for addon LINK, in case you are pc user and want to get it.

Only works from containers, static placed items in the world can always be taken regardless of settings.

As I always joke though, this is a staple of the TES series.
I feel not being able to accidentally take something of the counter and get beat up by a guard for it would makes this less of a TES game.

the staff in front of the writ hand in crate in grahtwood. done it more than once.
however, the only reason it happens is because i click e before i get a proper target. if you arent targetting something fully before clicking its your own fault. i dont believe the game needs any changes. just take it a fraction of a second slower and you'll all be fine.

and you cant afford a bounty that small? then you should be flogging the stuff and selling it

Like hell I will. It takes long enough running through this god awful Guild trade system. Sometimes when I’m running back and forth between them, I don’t notice I’m targeting an owned object. It’s a monotonous process. Bounty is small, but sometimes I have other stolen items and I don’t feel like dealing with all that drama from the guards while I’m forced to participate in this horrible system.

Adding a simple mechanic to prevent stealing while not crouched should be no trouble at all. No the game doesn’t “need” it, but it would make an already-terrible, inconvenient process a little more convenient.

Except that there are plenty of places where you can take stuff without needing to crouch, so you're just removing one person's inconvenience (being caught stealing accidentally) while adding inconvenience to someone else (having to crouch unnecessarily). Any such mechanic would therefore need to be optional with a toggle under settings for those who need it, but really it shouldn't be necessary if you just exercise a little care and know what you're clicking on.

The mechanic would naturally be one that can be toggled on and off, like the one that prevents attacking innocents. It wasn’t necessary, but convenient for players that didn’t want to get run out of town every time they accidentally left-clicked near an NPC. This should be seen under the same light.

major major difference in attacking innocents and taking a random staff. same light? not even the same sun.

I seem to remember in the singleplayer TES games - at least Skyrim, I can't remember if Morrowind and Oblivion did it - if you stole a low-value item, and were caught by the shopkeeper, they would just attempt to confiscate it. And by low-value I mean like, literally a tomato, or a crappy generic dagger. If you immediately yielded and let them, you wouldn't get a bounty iirc.

I think since most of the items around merchants tend to be zero-value anyway, if they can't just remove the items from the game or add the prompt to confirm you really want to steal that zero-gold voidsteel dagger, they could implement a system like that.

In any case, yes, I'm guilty of trying to use the crafting stations and stealing an item I couldn't care less about, thereby making me an international criminal. ~_~

No doubt Gina Bruno will call it a "QoL improvement" and Richard Lambert will say "you know you don't have to talk to the NPC, right?".
Even on the internet, clear communication is important; it can be the difference between "helping your Uncle Jack off a horse" and "helping your uncle jack off a horse"; the difference between "knowing your s***" and "knowing you're s***".

Just so that everyone knows, my Altmer still can't have black hair. About a dozen of Altmer NPCs in the game have black hair. Just saying.

    Meet my characters:
    Command: Do the thing.

Zadarri, Khajiit Fist of Thalmor: The thing was done, as commanded.
Durza gra-Maghul, Orc blacksmith: The thing was done perfectly, in the most efficient way.
Tegwen, Bosmer troublemaker: You can't prove I didn't do the thing.
Sings-Many-Songs, Argonian fisher: Sure, I'll do the thing... Eventually. Maybe.
Aerindel, Altmer stormcaller: After extensive research, I've come to the conclusion that doing the thing would be a waste of resources.
Liliel, Dunmer pyromancer: Aerindel said I shouldn't do the thing. Something about "resources".
Gyda Snowcaller, Nord cryomancer: I will find a way to do it that won't waste resources and make Aerindel proud of me.
Beatrice Leoriane, Breton vampire: I persuaded someone else into doing the thing. You are welcome, dear.
Sahima, Redguard performer: Doing the thing sounds awfully unpleasant and really not my problem.
Ellaria Valerius, Imperial priestess: I'll pray to the Eight for the thing to be done, if it is Their will.

Best advice, look at the NPCs heads, and you will steal less. Looking down as we all tend to do, it is easy to nick something you don't want to.

The alternative is to make everything a static again. I don't know if that makes for a better world.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

It's annoying no doubt - and almost purposely so because they usually scatter a lot of useless items that are easy to accidentally steal in front of every guild trader and NPC market place.

Part of me actually thinks ZOS is trolling us with it.

What they should do is just give you a chance to cancel the steal like you can when stealing items from inside pots and dressers etc.

If you are doing it so often you can't afford the bounties, then you need to pay more attention. I do it once in a great while, not a big deal, kind of annoying but not going to break my bank and I don't even farm! I just play the game and sell crap.
