Do you think armor/weapon set bonuses in ESO overshadow the class ?

Compared to GW2/WOW, personally i found out that the armor/weapon sets in ESO drastically change the playstyle/power of a character...moreso even when compared to the character's own class features...am I in a minority in thinking that ?

The fact that BiS gear is usually the same for every class shows that.

Yes. Sets are making a difference but its less important than you could think. E.g. when running in full medium armor for gathering purposes my sorc is still able to reach 20k dps without effort. Also you can put on the same sets on different classes and... Effects dont have to be satisfying.
Also the beauty of ESO comes from this diversity. For a long time there were BiS sets, but ZOS tries to balance that out. I preffer sets with many different efects than few sets that give you just better stats.
In the end it all comes to synergy between, class, used sets and play style - everything matters.

Proc sets always become more relevant then class skills when the enter a game. It is like that in every MMO I've played.

Armor and weapons matter more in ESO of course as there are specific skill lines for them. This concept doesn't exist in other MMOs. It makes sense for ESO to work like this, it's a TES game.

It does mean classes define your character less so than other games but it simultaneously can make your individual character more unique.

It's complicated.

Gear overshadows class by design. You don't choose your role via your class, you choose it by your gear.

If I say let's do a pledge, I'm a Sorc you might be forgiven into think I'm a dps, except my sorc is a Tank. My gear defines my role.

Stamina builds are likewise defined by the weapons they have chosen, not by their class skills and because of CP you'll ignore passives like bonuses to fire damage.

This means all classes can do well with a few good, generic sets. However, you can still bake your own custom build to take advantage of your classes specialities, like sheer venom on a stamblade or stacking crit on a stamsorc to try and proc their surge heals more often.

I like this. I like that any stamina build can pick up hundings rage and spriggan, grab a monster set and do ok.

Most of the time I think people get bad numbers and then want to blame it on gear. then they eventually get the "bis" gear and realise that it was their rotation and skill that was causing most of the problem.
I know plenty of people running the same gear on the same class and some are hitting 18k dps, while others are doing 35k dps. Then of course the 35k person trys something weird for their own curiosity and still gets 33k.

That right there is why I love the state of the game gear wise right now. I've been dying to play around with a set called Elf Bane for my DK, but since it came in heavy and healthy Jewelry I always just assumed it would suck. I tested it out the other day solo, and I usually get about 33-34k solo. Well with elf bane 3 jewelry and 2 heavy, I was about to get 31-32k. I was so happy it worked, I then spent way too much time trying to get a new rotation to fit the added duration, and ultimately realized I wouldn't do anything serious with it until at least being able to change trait of jewelry.

Bis is very close with a lot of sets being within a 2% error, and most others within 5-8%. I love it.

Gear has impact, but much more impact in my eyes have skills, not necessary class skills, but skills from skill lines and their passives and the knowledge/experience of the person behind the avatar.

Play a tank in a gear setup that does not provide any support for the tanking role and you might still be able to play 4-man-vet-stuff without major issues.

Play a tank without the 1hand+shield and heavy armor skill line and the passives from there and I wish you good luck.

Same applies for a DD or a healer.

In addition...the best gear setup won't make a good tank, healer or DD if you have no clue how to do that by using your skills. This applies especially to a DD role. Without using single target and/or AoE skills in form of a proper rotation (at best with LA/HA attack weaving and maybe even animation cancelling effects) your dps will still suck.

Actually in all other MMOs I know (don't know GW though) gear truly overshadows skills, but not in ESO. In ESO the person behind the Avatar makes a real difference. Even if things depend on gear, the decision to choose the right gear for a certain purpose/role is still something the player has to decide (it's called "build").

When you ask "compared to other MMO's"....the answer is no. Gear is just as critical, maybe even more, pretty much everywhere else, too.

If the question was "Is it more important than it should be" or "Is the "right" gear too important", I'd say an emphatic yes.

I'd say on a stam build - where they are all using very similar skills anyway - Yes.

On a mag class - where the class abilities - and therefore playstyles make the classes much more diverse - no.

It depends, if your stamina there are many options for group dungeons and trials.

TFS/AUTOMATON
BRIANHEART.
and a selection of monster sets like velidreth/spawn of mephala/ kraghs
But most of these sets don't show any visible difference to the class the just increase damage so they don't steal any classes identity...

I find this a poor example since a tank will have a different skill set-up than a healer or dps.

I never played any other MMOs, I'm just here for the Elder Scrolls stuff. As for armours vs class - my characters are more defined by their class skills than their gear, but they use mostly Bahraha's Curse, Ebon, Kagrenac, Seducer, Hunding, Twice-Born Star... if they wore more proc sets then I could see your point, maybe.
