I called my old pal a meta player and he went off on me and unfriended me (LOL)
He one of them who is good with every build [ self appointed]
Does being called a meta player trigger the pros?

Guess so, not eso but my other game fifa and similar happened for saying my mate only uses the fotm formation. Went off on a right one didnt unfriend me well kind of hard since we have been nates since 9 and now nearly 40

Still wind him up everytime we play already knowing exactly which fotm formation and tactics he will be using.

I thought meta was just another word for minmaxer and people were proud of it. No idea why someone would think it's an insult. If you're into that, you're into that, it's just gaming preferences.

Meta player? Seriously? Is it something you should be ashamed of? Good to know, thank God I'm not meta player. Maybe my DPS is 20k+ but at least I'm not a loser like those meta players who are playing as they want just like me.

I think the insult part might be that you undermine his efforts and imply he copy pasted a min maxer build from a you tube video which takes a lot less work than making your own build.

There's nothing wrong with wanting to be/have the best.

'Meta' has negative connotations because of those who want to be the best and mistakenly think if they copy pasta a build from the latest meta guide, it automagically makes them good, but they're mediocre at best. These are the players that speak like an authority on the meta but have no real understanding of what they're saying because they're just parroting the meta guide they read. Because of this, they're always flavor-of-the-month'ing and come off as annoying know-it-alls.

"The Meta" has been steadily being associated with the Tryhards and people who only care about being the best instead of actually enjoying the game. Perhaps OP's friend became insecure about being that way.

A meta build, by definition, cannot be common since it is, by definition, a build based on defeating the best / FotM builds.

You insulted and undermined the effort he put into his characters by claiming he's a "meta" player, suggesting he plays how he's told or uses builds others say are the best, rather than coming up with whatever else on his own. You're a bad friend and you should feel bad.

People get offended at being callled meta, because you are implying that they win because they are exploiting some build mechanic and not because they are good. Wheather there is truth to that sort of accusation will vary from person to person.

You probally came across as a salty scrub.

People who feel the need to try to insult anyone better then them are toxic and should be avoided at all costs.

There are only so many viable play styles. A gear set won't make you OP, the hundreds of hours playing a spec will though.

For something to be meta its being self referential, so meta gaming is the game within the game, how well you can play playing the game, which is basically theory crafting and build creation. Flavor of the month is what is currently best in any given patch or update, what works best with the current changes to the game. A meta player would see the changes and play to use them. A meta build is usually very common since theory crafter share their stuff and people would copy it, this would in PvP as well change the meta again as some would build to counter it. In PvP its far more fluid and changing but in PvE its just number crunching to the max.

For an argument to be meta its arguing about arguing, so for gaming to be meta its gaming about how to game.

For me, the difference is more about the type of person. The min/max player is going to be a theory crafter who is taking the measurements and doing the math. Even if they aren't getting their hands dirty, they know the details. This is a form of metagaming, in that it is specific to the outside understanding of the mechanics of the game, but they are a different breed than the meta player.

These days, the term "meta player" tends to describe someone who is using a commonly accepted build or strategy. Often times, they don't even know why they are using that build or strategy. The build or strategy they are using is "the meta", not to imply that there is only one possible. While this might not describe everyone who is using such a build or strategy, I consider this term to refer to those that do. They are copycats, and the term could be considered derogatory.

In my personal experience, where ever meta is mentioned... it always leads to hatred and a toxic environment. If you offended the players theory-crafting ability then its fine if he wanted to unfriend you and find like minded players. BIS is BIS, take advantage of it while you can, just don't go holding your head above anyone playing against the grain.

The community has made meta/bis/min-max and any other commonly agreed on standards into naughty concepts. It also might be insulting to your friend if they build for themself and not by a guide, eben if the end result still looks like meta.

If he is using net builds, instead of building his own, he might feel shame at being a "meta-player"; and weak people run from shame (common in this day and age). If he came up with his build on his own, then calling him a meta player may have offended him because it implies he didn't do his own work.

Either way, if a comment like that is enough to make some one unfriend you? How good of a friend were they really? Maybe we are different, but my friends and I constantly say worse to each other, it is our duty as friends to pick on each other.

The misnomer "meta" has been around at least since Guild Wars 1 in 2005-2006, possibly longer, has -never- meant "most effective tactic available," but is an abbreviation of "metagame." Then, it meant the whole bundle of skills and tactics used on an entire pvp team in guild battles.

It is a misnomer because, as a matter of fact and not opinion, the prefix "meta" does not mean "above" or controlling, but wholly outside and other. The "meta" of any game is real life. Prevailing favorite or popular tactics can be described accurately in any number of ways, "meta" not among them.

Almost all "gamer fanboi lingo" including "BIS," "cancer," etc., is inaccurate in similar ways.

To the actual topic, people take these games way too seriously. Bad on you for making unnecessary comments about how someone chooses to play a low skill video game meant to be a kind of mindless entertaining diversion as compared to -actual- skills and accomplishments, and bad on them for overreacting. I suspect there is more to this story than we are being told also.

depends on the player you say it 2, i use it as an insult, meta is just one person view that alot follow, so i can see why he went of on one, if he has his own build and does not go with instructed sets or sets peeps who can't be bothered to work things out
