Can a stamplar serve as main healer?

Sheylara
Sheylara
I'm relatively new to ESO, have spent a few weeks playing a Warden and now I've rolled an Imperial Templar which I think I want to play as my main

I've spent a week reading all the threads I can find on magplar vs stamplar arguments but still can't make up my mind because I have 2 wants that seem to be at odds:

1. I want to use a 2H because I think it's the most badass weapon and I love it. I will use it when soloing, which I do a fair bit.
2. I want to be a main healer in a group situation, in dungeons and raids, etc.

I don't need to have a 100% maximised build, but I want to be able to do a good job healing my groups at the end of the day.

Oh, another reason I want to go stam is because I'd prefer to wear medium or heavy armour, but that is a secondary consideration.

So... can I be a 2H stamplar and still be a good healer? :D

I sincerely doubt it would work at all. Stam Warden healer in a dungeons, maybe. But stam templar in a trial? Not gonna happen. You got 1 heal that scales of stamina, the rest is magicka. Its all based on what your skills scales by, and without a resto staff you will not make it far.

Healers use magicka as a main resource and their preferred weapon is a restoration staff.

2h weapons are meant to be for a dps (I have seen some tanks using them though). None of the skills of 2h would help your group running through a dungeon if you are their healer.

Besides, a healer should use light armor because of the passives. I have seen healers with heavy armor in PVP though.

Sure, Stamplar could be a decent healer for most 4-man content. Off the top of my head, you could run Echoing Vigor with Troll King, keeping up your Extended Ritual and using the Templar healing ultimate for emergency heals.

Thanks for all your answers! What if I made a magplar, but had a 2H on my second bar just for soloing, would that be gimped?

Also, what main weapon would be best for a Templar healer? I read that resto staff is redundant for a Templar.

No. Vigor is not enough to be a healer. Sorry, but you either choose to play as a stamplar or you go a magica templar to heal.

Resto staff is absolutely not redundant on a templar. You have 1 class burst heal you'd use (breath of life) but 90% of your healing comes from resto. Rapid regen and healing springs is how you do most healing. Combat prayer to buff your group. Breath of life is a last resort heal if someone is incredibly low or not in range of your healing springs.

Solo, you can run whatever you like. Most the content is super easy anyway. You can run 2h on a magica templar if you want. For dungeons you'll want a resto and lightning staff ideally.

no, espessially cause healer should not only heals but buff and support. So stam healer will not have enought resourses not for keeping combat prayer all the time nor for orbs. So even stam warden (that can heal great with fungus and ulti and support with vines) will be unoptimal compared to magicka healer.

Personally I think stamplar is more fun to play if you're going to solo a lot.

Magplar is easier to play and you can easily switch to healing but I didnt find it that exciting. 2H and medium armor will also not work well on a magplar.

If we are talking about an effective healer build that can heal vet dungeons (DLC included), vDSA, vet trials, you need a restro staff. Can be double restro or one restro one destro.

As a healer, there are 2 things you should do:
    1) Pull enough HPS to heal through all encounters.
    2) Support the group: feed resources to the group, burst heal in scary situations, cast combat prayer for Minor Berserk, blow Warhorn.

Vigor is an AOE HoT (heal over time), you can't really rely on a single AOE HoT to heal everyone through difficult content. So you probably won't be able to pull enough HPS and also you won't have a burst heal and won't be able to provide Minor Berserk through combat prayer.
Btw, as a Healer, your spammable heal is Healing Spring.

Thanks again for all your advice! Since I can't have both at once, then I think I will play a stamplar while I level up, then respec to magplar healer when I'm max level. That's kind of my solution to experience both things I want.

Will it be too late or too troublesome to start training resto and destro staves from scratch after I'm max level?

It's perfectly doable to train Resto and destro staves from scratch after hitting cp160. The first few skills will morph extremely quickly, though your morphs will take a tad longer to level.

Also another thing to keep in mind when deciding on the route you stated is your race choice. Imperials by far and large excel in stamina builds. Thus, swapping to Magicka would mean that you lose out on Magicka boosting passives from for example Altmer or Bretons.

It's not a huge, game changing difference in that you'll still be able to complete most/all end game content, but one that you should try to keep in mind.
    Kiss the chaos.

Oh yeah, that's true. Hmm... maybe I will like the stamplar so much I won't want to change. We'll have to see! Thank you for your help!

Totally works. Look up the "ZWEIHANDPLAR" build in the PVP forums. You want a 2handed great-sword for the damage bonus - just like how some mag builds run 2 swords. Read the 2h passives for greatsword carefully.

Stamplars would make an average healer, maybe fine for 4 man content, but you would be at a severe disadvantage compared to a mag templar healer when it comes to end game vet trials. you will have no magicka for BoL or healing springs and probably horrible mag recovery. vigor heals i guess ftw
