A Game Improvement that Could Save Lives in RW

jmrathbun

This AM in Malabal Tor, I looked at a river crossing right above a waterfall and my RW instinct told me "Don't go there!" That's because I live near a lot of waterfalls in RW, and we lose young, athletic tourists every year, swept to their deaths in places that look just like that. In RW, lichen-covered rocks become as slippery as ice and an ankle-deep stream can knock you off your feet when it runs fast. In game, I made the crossing with no difficulty. It occurred to me that this is a way the devs could save some actual lives: let people be swept to their deaths if they are foolish enough to cross even a small river above a waterfall.

Tbf if people are that unaware of the dangers from rivers/waterfalls then a change like that in the game is really not going to make a difference.

Especially when you can jump into a whirlpool in one of the cyrodiil delves XD

Peoples' characters should randomly be afflicted with 'Cardiac Arrest' as well! Loss of 25% HP every 2 seconds until dead.

It would raise awareness for cardiac health and well being!

And we could have there be a 0.5% chance of choking when using food! Have it bring up a minigame making you click on random glow spots appearing around the screen and, if you miss too many, your character chokes to death!

It would teach people to be careful when they eat!

    AND!!!1!!

We could have characters get old! Every RL month could equal five in game years, and when your character started to get to racial ages where they'd suffer some aging effects, they start to accrue permament move speed penalties, damage penalties on physical attacks (due to weakening with age), increasingly limited jump height and range and, eventually, you'd have to retire your character because all they'd be able to do in the twilight of their life is hobble around at 10% base speed, fall over all the time and generally be unable to fight anything at all anymore.

In retrospect, I bet there really are some folks who will read at least one of these and go "...I actually like that idea" and feel slightly awkward.

I have often thought that characters should randomly stumble while running. But... that is for a different thread.

I do not think that this would raise awareness of the danger of waterfalls, mainly because I don't think that the problem is one of lack of awareness.

I do think that moving water should push characters in the water, like Skyrim. Why do we move slower when walking through water, or dismount as soon as a hoof or paw touches it, yet we do not get carried away by the current?

We should probably make a Fire Ballista one shot as well, before people get the idea they can tank one in real life.

I see what you're saying OP, but I don't think changing anything in a videogame will help people in real life, maybe some more signs and information in real life near those areas.

Hilariously, I remember an RPG that actually did that, back about a decade ago. You'd just walk into the sea and drown.

I vaguely remember an MMO that actually did that, or intended to do that and never made it to market. (I'm a little fuzzy on which.)

Depending on how you develop the game, it can be interesting. If your gear gets passed down to a character's descendants or heirs, it becomes a way to force a respec at varying intervals. Also, some games use it to avoid needing a level cap, and ensuring that proc based modifiers can't be too powerful. Because your characters will die anyway in a few.

The utter absence of Skooma as a consumable is, honestly, kinda strange to me. I mean, I understand that ZOS doesn't want to promote drug abuse... in a game where I regularly enter dungeons boozed out of my gourd on fermented beetle bits, or tripping on daedric blood and tomato juice.

Not a good idea. Soon the so -called SJW's would run rampant. "Why arn't there crosswalks?". I applaud your thinking, but I'm a firm believer in keeping RL out of a game, at almost any cost. I play, Dev's dev.
