Why people jump in PvP?

When they are excited and hearts are pumping, they'll reflect it on their toons, jumping to reflect their true self.
I get excited sometimes in PVE too, when I have too much energy to burn, I would non stop jumping or pressing ability buttons constantly.

in pvp the "jumping" is used as a taunt, it represents the mindset that because you are so very good at pvp that no one can even stand a chance to attack you, and that you are laughing and gleefully jumping around that nothing bothers you in the pvp environment.

It's soo far from OP. It's not even close. It's so easily dodged if you know the game.

unless someone stuns/snares/roots your ass then they chain it on top of you.

certain ppl in pvp tend to jump behind me, then I either have to roll dodge or adjust the camera, so it probably gives those morons 1 or 2 seconds to hit me before I can hit back again. It's so lame...

Wow, I could not have said it better. You are spot on and any other answer is just an attempt the to hide the fact that they are in fact this type of player themselves.

On console it could be a simpler answer. To swap weapons on the standard button layout we have to take our thumb off L3, which stops our character completely. But jumping keeps momentum while bar swapping allowing a smoother feeling of gameplay.

Jumping around has some interesting practical and psychological impact, minor though it may be.
    • It can be distracting to fight a jumping opponent.
    • Jumping around can obscure some telling information like when a sorc has frags procced or when certain attacks get launched.
    • Some people have trouble tracking movement such as difficulty focusing on a moving target. Jumping is extra movement.
    • If opponents are nearby (like within a few meters) and you guys are constantly passing through each other, jumping can make it a little harder to line up the soft lock. It's maybe only buying fractions of a second at a time, but that's extra time that you aren't taking extra hits from them. As other people mentioned, this sort of hails from the FPS and it absolutely works here.
    • A lot of good... or simply really irritating and dangerous players jump around constantly. Shaking an opponent's confidence or willingness to attack is a basic part of combat.

Obviously, some people will have a different view on it, and maybe you don't think a jumping opponent has a tactical advantage or that jumping gives a psychological advantage, but consider this... some people are so bothered by jumpers that they make forum posts asking for jumps to cost stamina like dodge rolling does.

uh, yeah. It's an ulti. It would make sense that it would kill you if you're immobile.

Doesn't mean it's OP. And if you're rooted you still have plenty of time to get out. I just don't think it's OP, I don't think there's a reason you can call it that.

    rhythm, timing and situational awareness.

i use jumping as a metronome and if you see me jumping in combat i will be doing it almost on the second.

and to demonstrate the situational awareness thing i made this picture to show how different health bars can line up

Thats a lot of words. Jumping in the middle of a zerg makes it much easier for me to get a tab target on you. Doesnt distract me at all. Helps me focus you. To someone who doesnt get flustered in a battle, its just making it easier to single you out.

Sometimes jumping can help you establish LOS on an enemy who is higher than you (ex. keep wall, hill) and instantly cast an ability on him. I tend to jump when I have frags ready and cast wrath right after that.

Some people believe this makes you harder to hit, some people are wrong.
Wait does ground based DoT damage you while in the air

It make you stand out so snipers can focus on you, Hit me rather than an teammate who is more important.
Grinding just make you go in circles.

It's an obsessive behavior common to all forms of Multiplayer Gaming. It serves no genuine purpose other than to be annoying.
In some games, jumping makes you harder to hit. I played a game where jumping added range, so players jumped to outrange attacks.

    To animation cancel...

You see this a lot with Sorcs as they are attempting to use Frags on you while skipping it's animation...

Essentially, they can get rid of its cast time and cast it instantly...

WHAT?! Jumping doesn't Ani cancel unless it's got some distance to it
