Why is impen so useful in PvP I mean Won't it lower your dps

DPS doesn't matter in PvP because DPS is a measure of sustained damage. PvP is all about burst damage. But to the question, does impen lower your damage? Not really it just lowers your potential damage, but that potential is all wasted when you're dead, which impen prevents you from doing.

Like Wouldn't divines be more useful for your dps

Everyone needs some way to mitigate damage in PVP, either with very high phys/spell/crit resistances, large shields, blocking or frequent dodge rolling. Burst damage combo is more important than dps
    • If you are ganking yes, divines is better. You would be committing to this kind of squishy play style in order to burst people down quickly, then try to escape and reset stealth.
    • If you can manage to keep close to 100% uptime shields then divines, infused or one or two pieces well-fitted might be more useful, as shields don't register crits.
    • If you are blocking a lot, then sturdy can be more useful than impen, or some combination of impen and sturdy.
    • If you are roll dodging frequently in between attacks, for example using Eternal Hunt set, then well-fitted becomes handy.
    • Otherwise, 7 impen is probably the best option

All my chars have close to or above 50% critical in their PvP gear. Why? First, even if people wear full impenetrable, your harder hitting skills will do a lot of damage when they score a critical. Second, it's not only your attacks that can crit, but also your heals, and one class even has a critical hit dependent implicit self heal.

Impen is great because its the second strongest defensive trait in the game for Pvp. The average good pvper runs ~50% crit chance and 60-70 CHD, these baselines are determined by CP bonuses, meta sets(most all of them give a line or two of wep/spell crit), major prophecy/savagery, and either light/medium Passives or thief stone.

Now, sturdy is much better bang for you buck in a vacuum, on some niche builds well fitted is needed in a few slots, and there's even a case to be made for infused prismatics. However, because of the issues with mobility and stamina management sturdy only fits some situations, because of the times where having 5 sturdy give you 0 benefit impen will add more overall to your build.

If you could just stand and block and still be able to sustain without needing any mobility then sturdy would hands down out perform impen. Also, if there were no undodgeable skills then well fitted would likely be better as well

Is impen also the GO TO trait for Non CP PVP ?

Heard from some guildmates that in non CP impen was not required anymore, as burst from CP is not there

I still run impen but am quite curious

Kinda why proc stacking is all the rage. Who needs higher crit damage when you can have free damage and be useful against more opponents (shields due to no crits).

Now, it might be a different story if taunts reduced the damage that a player dealt to anyone but the taunter (without the horrible slap in the face that is the vanguard's challenge set. That set is so garbage that it deconstructs itself before it enters my inventory and then the materials apologize for how bad they've been.)

Is it an option if you plan to support your group with Frost Staff equipped and doing heavy Frost attacks from behind a group, staying away from enemy damage? HA and run, again and again. Will it work and be supportive? What's a chance that enemy pvpers won't notice you use that set and won't rush at you first?
What secondary set could work with vanguard's challenge in this config? Maybe Coward's Gear? :)

    Quick and dirty maths:

50% base crit multiplier (Can be boosted by shadow or force)
Average crit % ~50% (Lowballing severely)

Average damage increase per burst with crits = ~25%
Mitigation from 7 pc impen = 50% crit resist.
Damage mitigation (overall) from impen = ~12.5% (better than minor protection) (This number improves against very high critical opponents, such as nightblades, it also improves when you count guaranteed crits from night-blades and crit charge)

This reduction is increased when you have a multi-crit combo hit you. (Crit Charge > Crit Incap > Crit Wreaking Blow > Crit Reverse Slice)

Interesting, get an insightful for that.

So I have been taken my main Khajiit-Templar-Healer into Cyrodiil the past 2 weeks and surely enough i didn't bother to change my gear to impen. Still running 5 pc Kagrenacs, 2 Troll-King and 4 withered hand. But of course I wear 5 heavy and 2 light, to get a few resistances up.
As a healer i usually play in the backline and focus on healing my teammates up front. Rezzing them too (Kag and Templar+Alliance War passives really make it easy). Sure I have been bursted down here and there, but even when I am focused during a siege the old breath of life and extended ritual keep me alive. I am at about 25k health in Cyro and as of now I feel "okay-ish" and helpful for my team. Often times I am one of the last guys alive even.
Well, I will keep an eye on that once the event is over and all those hardcore PVP guys will bash the living skooma out of me. Until then I feel fine with my divine gear setup ;-)

I was running very long time with divined or infused parts. It was more damage and feeled good. In duells you lost and win... Anytime i changed to impen just for a geartest (i only had this set in impen for PvP and needed to test it). I was very critical about impen before! My result was, that i can handle this big damagespikes much better, because the crits are lower. This changed my mind. My damage isnt much lower and i have more time to react! Before i could be killed in 1vs1 just in 1 short stun or fear because of the crits.
This makes impen so important for PvP. I think they should take away the repair cost reduction and give impen a crit chance reduction together to the critdamage reduction!

Of course it's situational! But for the vast majority of situations Impen is much stronger than any other trait in PvP. Even on a mag sorc with their powerful shields, getting caught with them down, impen WILL make the difference between being 2 shotted and having an extra 1-2 seconds to get defenses back up. And that is a massive difference.

BTW divines will get a bit stronger next patch for stuff like recovery or weapon/spell damage. But running thief with divines traits in PvP is currently the worst set up, again, for most situations, and will only get worse next patch.

Haha! Yeah, but I guess we know what they mean. It seems people think 'DPS' and just 'damage' are interchangeable.

Edit; though I've fought some players where it feels like I'm doing a DPS test just pounding on these guys.

I know this has been said before, but the reason impen is so useful is that it helps with your survivability and cause your opponent to use more skills in their rotation, which ultimately makes them use more of their resource. Pvp really isn't all about DPS only. Divines may increase your DPS, but makes you SUPER squishy. I used to play with Divines trait when I first started playing, but switched over to Impen. Players with Divines trait are usually the ones that demand nerfs, because they see that they can deal as much damage to players with Impen.

in the last week, I have realized that I'm going to have to get a set of impenetrable if I wish to go back to pvp at any point. my divines as nice as it is, did nothing both to get me to do enough damage against some of those players in impenetrable gear AND it did less then nothing to protect me from being focused. in battles of attrition? I lost. against sneacky gankers? i STILL lost. so impenetrable it is.

PvP is not just about who makes most of damage. You need to find the right setup for balanced damage, survivability and sustain.

I have one ganker build that can burst out people easily under a second, but can't fight back much longer.

So if my gank fails, i'm as easy target as an antelope.

Impen sucks. Google any of my 8000 posts as to why.

It simply doesn't—and Divines/Infused or whatever other trait simply doesn't give as much as Impen does. If I'm fighting someone with zero crit resist I'm going to hit them for 4-5k extra damage. If I run 7 divines I'm not really getting anything—150 extra regen? 200 Extra Spell damage, 6% extra crit damage or 6% extra crit? None of that is better than turning a 12k leap into an 8k leap.

Nightblade gankers quite often wear divines in order to nuke our target as quickly as possible.

On my main stamblade I wear a mix of divines and well fitted.

My defence is roll/stealth if things get hairy. Even more important is to choose my target carefully and be disciplined in both target selection and my positioning.

I try to only attack from the cover of some rocks. If things get hairy, I roll/stealth back to those rocks.

If someone has a shield on their back or is with friends, I let them ride by. A bow or 2handed may be ok. The guy riding past wearing a dress with a big stick on his back...he's mine.

    Good hunting!
