Edit: I also want to note that with the evolution of plate mail, the use of shields became less prevalent. While they were useful, a small sword would have difficulty penetrating the full body platemail, chainmail, and brigandine that a knight would wear. Soldiers that were poorer and couldn't afford platemail would have likely utilized a shield, but straight up knights likely wouldn't

True that. I've studied this kind of stuff a lot.

Basically bigger shields were generally used in periods were there was less armour. In Medieval Europe, the 'Norman Kite' shield was long enough to protect the legs as they generally didn't have any leg armour. The 13th century saw knights wearing full head-to-toe mail, but smaller heater shields as their legs didn't need that much protection anymore, and the smaller shield was more mobile. Between the 13th and late 14th century knights stopped using shields altogether on foot as the armour transitioned to plate - and the wooden shield gave no more protection than just blocking with a plate-covered arm. This let them use bigger weapons (pollaxes etc.) to try to overcome the armour.

I always chuckle when I see MMO's having 'tanks' always having plate armour AND shields.
    Minalan owes me a beer.

If I'm not mistaken, in the late 15th century, Knights gradually stopped using shields, as they were covered in steel.

And yeah, Soldiers were usually too poor to afford plate, but again, towards the late 15th century, again if I'm not mistaken, steel became cheaper and easier to produce, therefore you could see infantrymen using partial plates, While before they used mainly gambesons, chainmail when they could afford and a helmet, So they would have used a shield to make up for the lesser protection.

If you don't like it use another one, is my favorite shield because it actually looks like a shield, not those barbie shields who couldn't even protect you from a punch.

    Mercenary is not bad either.

OP, let those who want a big shield have one. You have plenty of small shields to choose from.

Mercenary shield looks weird when you're guarding. It feels like the shield isn't even on your arm. It'd be the perfect shield if that wasn't the case.

Know what game has the best shields...

    Diablo 2
And that game is over 20 years old and still beating every other game in terms of shields.

I like big shields too.. Most of them are too small, imho.

Bigger is always better, I don't give the small ones any attention, waste of my time.
Size isn't important, it's the way you use it that matters.

Yes only the tough people can handle the big size...
Just think about the type of people that have big size...

    Usually very athletic and buff.

Now think about the people who usually have the small size.
    Scrawny, very dorky

Having a big size will let everyone know the kind of style you are...
Do you want to be strong and buff... Or scrawny and dorky??
    Size matters.
