It's like this on almost every MMO or online game that allows you to add a name.

And that is offensive with that name, yes it obviously refer to an easy to pick up Argonian lady.
its lore friendly and is just an suggestion.
On an male Nord it would be offensive :)

In the long list above: Daeric car bomb and Redguard life matters is the only who is questionable because politic.
Grinding just make you go in circles.
Asking ZoS for nerfs is as stupid as asking for close air support from the death star.

My brother had a temp Argonian named Ribbed-for-her-Pleasure. I kinda wish he had kept it just to see how long it took to get an order to change it :)

I had a character named "music magic sex and blood" and I generally liked and wanted the name.

was really sad the day they made me change it, just deleted the character at that point :C

but if it keeps the dumb names out of the game made by 12 year olds I get it.

It's a rated M game. Who really gives a *** what people name a virtual character, in a virtual world. If character names bother you then I truly feel bad for you in today's society.

Thin skin seems to be a problem specific to MMOs. PvP games, like shooters and MOBAs, have no name restrictions (sans names that are racist/homophobic/misogynistic), or if they do, nobody ever reports people for having fun names.

My gamer tag has been "immature" (but in no way offensive) ever since I started online gaming. It's still my gamertag on Steam and Battle.net after 15+ years. Yet I've had to change it in every MMO I've ever signed up for.

From what I seen, inappropriate nicknames must be directly vulgar in order to be forced to change. Or must contain ZoS reference :-D Just last week a guy on forums was complaining for being forced to change nickname "Wrobelz".

I don't see anything bad about dual sense nicknames like Big Stick.

Now wait... where does one draw the line on this?

I'm a mature adult, I can handle innuendo. I'm also sometimes an immature adult who uses innuendo.
This game is meant for adults, I see no problem with that. If you don't want your kids to be exposed to sex and violence, how about you don't let them play games or watch movies that include sex and violence? That's what the frickin rating system is there for. Don't buy something for your kids that has a big "17+" placard on it, then come back and complain that your kid was exposed to something inappropriate.

However... some comments have also referenced issues like politics, racism, sexism, etc. And some people have actually argued "freedom of speech" when it comes to using blatantly offensive names, whining about "social justice warriors" who want to change them. This is where I draw the line. I'm sorry, I'm usually pretty open minded, but I don't think it's appropriate to use racial slurs or other offensive types of language in your username. Whether it's meant as a "joke" or not. Freedom of speech does not mean you can say whatever you want, wherever you want without consequences.

Eh. As a habitual roleplayer, I never really understood the infantile need of some people to make silly or otherwise questionable character names. I wouldn't do it even for my least played testbed alts... I try to strive to make at least somewhat in-character sounding names (and have spent crowns on renamings when I got a better idea that fit the character concept more lore-conforming then what I originally started with) Heck, I even sketch out rudimentary backstories for my most minor testbed alts, even if its only something like "big, burly, hard-drinking nord mountain man brawler got completely wasted on free mead night and wandered into adventure by mistake" or "altmer girl of loose morals got religious after escaping coldharbour and now pretends to be a pious priestess" or "redguard city guard sacked for corruption and prisoner abuse, now trying to make a quick bit of gold as bounty hunter, rescuing the world as collateral salvage" or "imperial legionariess caught up in the trouble after the soulburst, now fighting for the pact to win enough rewards to retire on her dream boat someday"

But while I find those with "just for fun" names mildly annoying to my immersion, I wouldn't report them for it either, I'd just laugh at their foolishness... kinda like...

(Though I will admit, I secretly wish there was a "Roleplay Server" where you could not just play, but had your character name and backstory approved first by GMs! Not that this will ever likely happen, but... one can dream, right? ;) )

BtW, on often mentioned "freedom of speech" in this regard...
"Freedom of Speech" means the -government- will not deny you the right to -say- whatever you wish to say, no matter how much everyone might disagree with it. It does not protect you from consequences by other sources, so its still a good thing to think before you speak lest you find yourself ridiculed by your neighbors / punched in the face / let go at work / whatever...
    Thus...
...it also does not mean others cannot make "house rules" about what they will allow being said in their house/game/forum, so to speak. And ZOS makes the "house rules" for ESO and for these forums, so citing "freedom of speech" won't protect anyone from consequences they might wish to heap upon them when their house rules aka community standards are blatantly ignored.

That would be interesting, and I'd probably take part, but I'm fairly certain the majority of people wouldn't.

Exactly. Nobody is going to jail for making an inappropriate username. However, they can certainly lose their account for it. Just like you can lose your job if you say something inappropriate at work. And you can lose your wife if you say something inappropriate to your sister-in-law. Etc., etc. :)

And some people have actually argued "freedom of speech"

So many people try to use this argument when they don't even know what freedom of speech is or means. It basically means you have a right to say what you want in public within reason.

Firstly there's the "reason" part, being racist or vulgar is beyond reason.
Secondly "in public", the game is not public, it is a private server hosted by its owners, which you have to be a member (have an account) to enter.

Therefore the freedom of speech argument simply does not apply.

I never use the freedom of speech argument. It's more like the "Lighten up ZOS and let us have a bit of fun" argument.

Or the "let us have non-blatant clever mature names in a mature game" argument.

Besides, even though free speech doesn't apply to the private sphere, you can encourage companies to adopt a free-speech philosophy. Things are better when people can express themselves freely. Hug boxes and safe spaces just rot the mind.

Oddly enough I've been forced to change two names, Faggerdoll Ovencant (a Spoonerism of DC, since my toons were all pvp DC toons back then) and Rngesusbeamer (which I guess sort of has the name Jesus in it, but there's others who copied my name still in-game).

Moistest-of-Spines still gets a pass, though. Stay moist, friends.

The first 3 letters of "Faggerdoll Ovencant" could have triggered the report. The last 6 letters of "Rngesusbeamer" is a racial slur.

Op: it's not just the dumb names that I find ridiculous, it's the pretense of ignorance/innocence that they adopt afterward. Like the player who wanted a name of a General from the German Nationalist Socialist party of the 40s. Who do they think they're fooling?

Well they probably are fooling all of the ZOS Name Change Team because who has a handy list of every German national socialist from the 40s? Well then again, maybe the Name Change Mods are all history majors because they can't do anything else with that degree. History Majors finally found their niche!
