Is it me or do dot's/poison over time suck in this game due to slow effects?

I really love the way my current character plays but damn...dot's are slow. Stacking seems useless compared to straight instant damage. I currently feel ultimate that are channeled or DOT are worthless too. Is it a L2P issue or is this par for course?

1 question. Do poison's that tick count as DOT's?

To your question, yes they deal x damage over a period of time t.

Dot builds can be very strong but only against certain specs, templars will laugh at you when you try to kill them with a dot build just like magnb and for a lesser extent stamnb.
Stamsorcs and stamdks have problems against them because as soon as you deal more damage than vigor heals in one second it's easy to kill them.
It helps against shieldstackers because their shields always take damage so a burst combo will deal much more damage to their health.

But there is a huge drawback and that is that you have to survive long enough to apply all dots and that you often still need some kind of burst rota to secure a kill

Thanks a lot for the pvp perspective. If anyone has any PvE perspective it is equally valued to me. I am currently playing it in PvE and this is just what it feels like. It is only decent on bosses...Everything else dies so quick the dot's just tick too low. My opinions of course are simply based off not maxed characters, but from my pve experience the above statement rings true.

Yes, for overworld PvE (questing and whatnot) dot builds are more cumbersome than direct damage spam.

For dungeons/trials/"real pve," dot builds are pretty much the accepted norm!

I find Dot skills pretty much useless for all PvE Overworld content, except maybe world bosses. Nothing is standing long enough for it to have full effect. I wish they would introduce some more shorter but stronger dots. 3-4 seconds max.

My typical overworld fight lasts about 2-3 seconds, against a group of enemies or about 4-6 seconds the "harder" trolls, gargoyles and such. So any dot against those are usually wasted DPS, since most dot's last about 8 seconds or longer.

My front bar is mainly Direct damage skills, and on back bar i keep all buffs and/or dot's for those longer boss fights, so I rarely use back bar/dots at all.

Which is why DoTs suck in this game. A full duration DoT should do staggering amounts of damage, not less than one single target attack.

The only game that really ever got that right was Everquest.

I have a PvP based build on DoTs... I'll ask the guys I kill every night if they feel DoTs in this game are bad...

Try spamming direct damage abilities against dungeon bosses with very little dots and see how well you do.

On my Stam Sorc I'm trying out a 2h build in dungeons (much like Alcast's Deathstroke endgame build) and even though I spam Wrecking Blow and Heavy Attacks most of the time, you want to take a wild guess where the most of my damage comes from?

Yes, a dot ability, Endless Hail.

Dot's are, when used properly, very powerful and a dot-less build will lack in power against a build utilizing at least 2-3 dot skills 9 times out of 10.

Did I misread OP's post or miss anything? I feel like it's quite obvious how important dot's are in longer fights?

Overworld content and enemies are just Meh, doesn't matter what you use, you light attack a Giant to death if you want to. Dungeons and Trials are light years ahead in terms of difficulty.

If anything dots are the strongest source of DPS in long fights, which PvE is all about. And it should be that way, otherwise we would only need one skill. Boring af.
I have no idea where your findings come from, but it's definitely not dungeons/trials. As stated by others, overworld is a joke right now. Has been that way since One Tamriel. Before that, the vet areas were actually quite challenging and craglorn in specific was quite hard to do solo.
Since I mainly play mag sorc I can tell you on a boss about 60% of my damage comes from dots. You can't get high DPS numbers without using dots, you'll probably ending up not even dealing 10k DPS if ignoring Dots.

This is simply not true. Liquid Lightning, Elemental Blokade, Endless Hail, Poison Injection all deal an incredible amount of DPS. On a parse using a vma bow Endless Hail will usually deal twice as much DPS than the next strongest ability.

You should practice your DoT Rotations in the overworld and delves. That way you have a tight rotation when it counts for Bosses, Vet Dungeons and Trials (normal and vet)

I am new. I was just investing a lot of time in DoT's and pre vet dungeons are pretty much my opinion. I was just wondering if this changes in later levels or not and seems it does. I just didn't want to get stuck investing too much time in a certain char and certain set of skills if it wasn't going to pan out. In normal dungeons it just seemed to me like most stuff dies before dot's even do a tick or two and they were only useful on bosses while instant damage/burst damage seemed to be the way to go.

Appreciate the input from you and everyone else for sure.

until you get to level 50 cp160, don't worry about much, just enjoy playing the game. you can respec everything in the game, attributes, armor, hell even your race, so just play for fun till you hit max rank.

Once you get a character to CP160, then any other character you can level to L50 becomes CP160 (or whatever your total Champion Points are). So, in addition to the above comment about being able to respec just about anything so no choices you make about your character are permanent, other than Class. You can also roll each of the other 4 classes besides the one your in now, and then you can use any class at any time to take advantage or avoid the changes in the game.

If leveling another character is not your cup of tea, then wait for one of the Experience Doubling events and level your alts then.

Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

    1- DoTs can crit
2- theres an entire CP star that increase DoTs dmg ona 25% base.
3- There's another star that increase crit dmg from 50% base

As the others have mentioned, once you get CP160 you'll see your DoTs shine.
