It heals well because it negates group damage with major resistance buffs (from one skill cast).
It tanks well because even specced this way it can dribble itself health and its fav resource, and can keep itself alive pretty much indefinitely.
OK, DPS. Stamina it's OK and can even do a little off healing. Magicka is a touchy one. Meta builders run their simulations in tight, isolated scenarios and magWard doesn't do so well in these. However, anyone who runs a magWard healer that throws down subterranean assault (a frigging AoE major resistances debuff) will be able to tell you the effect that has on group DPS. Add a staff to that and use a complementary race (anything that doesn't try to synergise on their ice stave passives, that's a red herring) and you have yourself a DPS utility class. Single target DPS, I'll give the metaheads that.
Perhaps best of all, you can play all those roles at once if you go magicka with a little stamina. PvP community figured that out within like a second, PvE community just cried to the extent that magWards are actually getting a buff next major patch o.O

Subterranean Assault does nothing that a tank's pierce armor doesn't. When I tank I use pierce armor to taunt almost everything, making this a redundant skill. Its true that there are many tanks out there that don't taunt everything though so it can be useful. The biggest issue with sub-assault for me the is that its the STAMINA morph...which makes it great for stamdens, but terrible for magdens...in other words, a stamden tank would use it, but if a magden healer uses it, they gimp themselves for the potential damage the magicka morph would provide. Not a big deal if all you do on a magden is heal...but its a HUGE deal if you want to swap gear and DPS. I think BOTH morphs should have the major breach and major fracture, since the magicka morph only stuns one enemy anyway, which is virtually worthless outside of 1v1 PvP.

I'm playing Magicka DPS just fine.
