Out of curiosity and because the trailers looked cool and because I obviously don't have enough on my plate as it is, just now, tonight, I downloaded and tried another popular MMO which shall remain nameless.

And I truly went in with an open mind, WANTING to like it. I was right in the mood for something new to me. Instead -- I hated it. Didn't like the character design, didn't like the graphics, didn't like the way the controls handled AT ALL. The "choices" that I was given to begin the character's "story" were not particularly consequential. The game was all teeny-tiny figures in a landscape that was much cartoonier than the trailers had shown. And just as I was starting to realize how much I didn't like all this... it crashed on me.

So. that was a considerable hunk of gigabytes that got sent straight to the trash. Could not uninstall it fast enough.

This makes two other major MMOs that I've tried besides ESO and -- Warts and all, I think "our" game is head and shoulders above the competition, no contest. And no, I'm not on the ZOS payroll! All it took was experiencing the competition for about ten minutes to send me running back here.

There is no other MMO out there that has:

    - Actual meaningful quests
    - Action-based combat

GW2, WoW, and BDO, are all lacking one or both of those things. And that's why, for me, they can't compete with ESO. The "RPG" part in "MMORPG" is very important to me. If an MMO isn't a good RPG (which none of the aforementioned titles are), then I don't find it enjoyable to play.

I have to say ESO has won my heart.

My EVE Online character turns nine this year but for the last three years I've hardly played because I love ESO so much. That's not to say EVE isn't an amazing game, I just found myself loving how ESO played and fit with my life more.

I still also go play SWTOR sometimes just because for all the crud the story there is amazing and I have to scratch that Sith itch.

I've had my fair share of issues with these developers adopting more and more shady business tactics from the crappier MMOs over the years and making idiotic design choices that make absolutely no sense, but overall, I agree. This is an extremely ambitious MMO, and while it has plenty of issues because of that and got off to a pretty lame start, I can't think of any MMOs that can truly compete with this one. ~Mr. Pibb

I really enjoy eso. Obviously, I'm here. But there are several things that stop it from being a lock for me. On going bugs(looking at you group finder) and lack of what I think of as basic quality of life updates(looking at you auction house search functions). The game is no longer 'new' and some of these things start to wear on me.

So who knows what the future holds. But right now? it is eso for me.

I like ESO. But as soon as a new open world guild based PvP mmorpg is out there I'll go to my element.
ZOS has done a good job in furthering the TES Lore and making players play together on this background, but they can't grasp PvP not one bit.

ESO definitely has the best console port of all MMOs so far. They carefully crafted each UI part to accommodate controllers and a TV. No other MMO has done that. Look at FFXIV and you'll see how *** everything is on screen.

I have tried a few new MMOS but nothing compares to ESO's PVP. I can't seem to find another that will replace it, the only game that ever came close was red dead redemption. I do juggle between ESO and SWTOR now, but ESO being the main game I play just because of Cyrodiil

I think the point is: Why you are bothering with the forum of a game that you are not playing? You swing by simply to say that.

Despite what you originally wrote, that says a lot about ESO and the ESO forum. In a positive way. You want to be here playing. You want to be here so much that you still hang out on the forum. Keep this up and you will be playing, again.

I think ESO is the best game on the market right now, single or multi-player. Sadly, so does Bethesda and ZOS, so we get the marketing blitz. I prefer the 'hidden gem' games, rather than the popular ones. ESO started as the former, but is much more like the latter, now.

I write it on ESO forums, so it obviously will be a totally unbiased opinion. :P

To the point then. I fell in love with ESO the first day I started playing it. It's not that much (april 2016), considering I play with people that have been here since beta. I'm getting bored with it though. There is barely new content, some mechanics change every big patch, but the game is rather static (even Morrowind barely added anything, small zone, 10 hour questline, some grinding to do, everything feels and plays exactly the same as before). It would be fine for a single player game, but I expect more from MMO. Why do I keep playing then? It's still very good! I'm not having as much fun as I had the first few months, but some great moments still happen every now and then.

To be frank, I'm a big fan of jRPG, or rather a fanatic, but I do play western RPGs, too. Some time ago I really wanted to get into FFXIV. It looked like a perfect game for me. People praise the story. For me it was slow, dull, repetitive and boring more often than not. The quests themselves were nothing more than fetching and running through zones. The battle system was borring as hell. I literally had to press one button five times, then another once and yet another 4-5 times. Move out of red if neccessary between "rotations", rince and repeat (everything while being stationary, as moving disrupts casting). You get some off gcd skills later and some dots that make it less painful, but still... The gear choice is just not there. Everything is pretty much the same. Don't get me wrong, there is a lot of gear, but every single item just feels like it's exactly the same save for stats. It doesn't really affect your playstyle. Friends claim it's getting MUUUCH better starting with endgame, but, seriously, I don't feel like wasting 100-150 hours just to get to something interesting. And the graphics... By all means, I'm not a gfx ***, but in this game it does sometimes feel like it's an indie game, especially in starting/old zones. People praise the graphics there, maybe PS4 version of the game is just subpar, as I consider the graphics barely tollerable. It's not about aesthetics, I love that feel, vivid colors and all... just the poor execution.

ESO won me over in both questline and keeping my interest from the very beginning. The endgame is lacking, though. Barely anything to do save for grinding... Or rolling another char to play new class.

I love this game's combat, it's what keeps me here in all honestly. I love that there is room for such a huge skill gap and it's not just pressing buttons. You actually have to dodge, block, shield, weave, etc.

But honestly the rest of the game just doesn't do it for me. The quests were mind-numbingly boring (admittedly I don't really enjoy single player quest content,) the overland is just pathetic, there's only two challenging dungeons in the game and even then they can be trioed or duoed with relative ease, trials are laggy and skills are buggy, servers are less stable than Taylor Swift's relationships, and don't even get me started on the incessant grinding of weapons and gear because of quite possibly the worst RNG I have ever seen in any game.

And this small rant may attributed to my guild being almost entirely unable to raid for nearly 3 weeks because of people dcing from trials.

You should have responded to the OP. He hated other MMOs so he came to ESO thread to talk about it.

I love playing EsO but what makes me soo upset is they want to hide things behind the crown crates. For example new hair, and new eyelashes. Are you freaking kidding me? I would consider myself as one of the top spenders in this game before crown crates came out. Not sure now because I have a feeling players are spending 100s of dollars trying to get something in the crown crates.

Recently I have been thinking about canceling my 2 subs and tip toeing into another MMO just to see if I like it. FF sounds like a good choice to me. Doesn't me an I will quit ESO, who knows I might be back here defending the OP and saying all other MMOs suck.

ESO is definitely on top of the pile compared to it's competition. However for me personally I crave open world PvP/PKing because I like to create my own narrative. Always looking over my shoulder when grinding, getting rekt by other players and then getting revenge kills etc. That's just the kind of player I (and my wife) are, and the kind of content we crave.

Justice system PvP was what I was holding out on, but unfortunately that got cancelled completely and unlike spell-crafting which is just on the back burner, I doubt we will ever see any kind of open world PvP in this game.

Which is fine. I understand why they want to keep PvE and PvP separate because there are a lot of 'carebears' (ugly word) who play this game, and from a business perspective I can understand their reasoning to not mix PvP and PvE in ESO.

So as it is now I'm just playing ESO casually, not really putting as much cash into it as I used to, and just waiting for an MMO that has open world PvP to come around, then I'll maybe jump ship.

And no, BDO doesn't interest me at all.

Everquest is still my favorite MMO of all time, but it's so out dated and fugly i can't play it anymore. ESO is pretty damn good compared to everything else.

I didn't much care for BDO, but the character climbing was just awesome, I wish ESO would adopt that. Climbing over rocks and stuff just made my day, for some odd reason.

I've only tried one other MMO before ESO. It was called Runes of Magic or something like that. It bored me stiff and I quit after about a week. Graphics were cartoon-like and poor overall, combat was simplistic, there was no real content. This was about 7-8 years ago. Until late 2013 when ESO Beta came along I just refuse to consider this kind of games. I joined the Beta in early March 2014, played for 2-3 week-ends, but then lost interest due to other RL pursuits - I was away for work purposes for an extended periods. I briefly played during a welcome back week-end in April 2015. I only bought the game in October that year, and I really liked it since it had improved quite a lot since the Beta days.
Beta tester since February 2014, played ESO-TU October 2015 - August 2022, currently on an extended break

I'm glad that ESO scratches that MMORPG itch for you, OP.

Myself, I have had quite the opposite experience.

With the changes made to ESO over the last year or so, I've all but quit playing. I disagree with the (very summarized) philosophy that "balance" requires constantly making the Player and associated characters weaker just to cover up blatant design flaws, lack of content, and ineptitude at keeping an Online Only game from having atrocious lag, FPS drops, and game crashes.

So as a result; my play time in ESO has dropped to no more than 1-2 hours every couple of weeks, and I've discovered a new love for my old "tried-and-true" MMORPG's.

GW2, LotRO, FFXIV, Star Trek Online, and Neverwinter are my mainstay MMORPG's, and I love them all. But the one MMORPG that I've really gotten back into and has been receiving the maximum of my play time is EverQuest 2. I love that MMORPG, and all the ones I listed has everything I'm looking for in my MMO's, and they have everything that ESO has been steadily removing/ruining over the last 1+ year.

I'm not going to bag on you for loving ESO. That's a fine thing indeed, and I'm sincerely happy that ESO has everything that you're looking for.

But... maybe it's due to how long I've been playing MMO's? After taking part and witnessing the birth of the genre 20+ years ago with EverQuest, Ultima Online, and Asheron's Call; maybe my standards are a bit different for what I want to see in my MMORPG's? I cut my teeth on those first three MMO's, and have loved (and at times hated) the evolution of this genre over the past few decades.

But I know that, for me, ESO has lost that... spark that originally drew me to it during its Beta periods and it's launch three years ago.

So while I love the fact that ESO is all that you want it to be, I find it very much lacking in many, many areas, and due to that I have all-but quit playing.

I'll stick to the MMORPG's that I know and love, and they're thriving and doing very well for themselves, and I have rediscovered my love for them over the past year.
