I don't mind at all as long as a non native English speaker is trying. You can tell if someone is really trying to get it right.

What I hate is someone who SHOULD know how to make a sentence properly and use decent (not perfect) grammar, and they just don't. I think it makes you look stupid and diminishes the point that you are trying to make.

    It's not U, it's YOU
    It's not 4, it's FOUR

And for the love of God - figure out "THEIR", "THERE", and "THEY'RE".

U and I would never get along.

LOL. I agree but I can't say that I hate it, because when I click on a thread that opens with "The wall of words" - I just usually click the back button and move on without reading at all.

I'm extremely self conscious about grammar or spelling being alright, and even end up editing many posts for the smallest mistakes. I appreciate being corrected tho, asi it tends to get stucked on my mind and it's not too likely I'll commit those again (any time soon).
    Edit. Autocorrect sucks sometimes.

I can deal with missing words, spelling errors, and grammatical errors, as long as there is a cogent thought buried in there somewhere. If the message is rambling, jumping from thought to thought, some of them incomplete, or some disorganized wall of text, then I tune it out.
Now I know why you never post in my threads.

I have to agree with you on this though, I normally like to read a long well written post even with some language issues.
Ones where half the sentences are broken up with **** and jumping all over the place with rage tend to lost my interest in reading.

    You said something?

I don't think anyone speaks perfect English anymore. Especially not Americans. Your English is fine for someone who doesn't speak it as a native language.

Perfect English? I am fairly sure one of my school teachers would be unhappy with my current use of American English.

I was almost an English major, and I'm 100% positive that many of my former teachers would find faults with my use of American English. Nobody is perfect. Nobody should be expected to be perfect. I realize that I'm being completely obnoxious. It just annoys me when native English speakers don't even TRY to use the language correctly. Call it a pet peeve, or obsessive-compulsive disorder, or whatever. I just lose a little bit of faith in humanity any time I encounter a person who doesn't care about anything, right or wrong, truth vs. fiction, etc.

I understand everything that the non-native English speakers in this thread have posted. Their English is far better than my Dutch, Russian, etc. will ever be. I admire them for learning multiple languages. They are not the ones I have a problem with. The ones I have a problem with are my own compatriots who can't even bring themselves to properly learn one single language - and then they wonder why the rest of the world perceives us as idiots. If the shoe fits...

I have every respect for people from other countries who speak English. Unfortunately the English as a race expect the rest of the world to speak our language, and mostly make no attempt to try and reciprocate.

Maybe it's a question of education...foreign languages are not a strong point in British schools, whereas most other countries in the civilised world do learn English, and to a fairly high standard.

So, I appreciate that foreign players make the effort, and as such imperfect grammar and spelling are understandable.

This is more than I can say for native English speakers, many of whom have an appalling grasp of their own language....and this is what really annoys me. Every child in England has access to a decent basic education, and to my mind there is absolutely no excuse for not being able to speak or write one's own language correctly, except in the unfortunate case of genuine learning difficulties.

I´m german, playing the game on english ... but when some of my guildies, who are playing the german localized version, start mentioning the horrificly butchered names of places and skills I get a little bit nauseous. :disappointed:
Also - sometimes it is really hard to translate back to know what they are talking about. "Gramfeste" ... are you effin kidding me?
In Russian translation made by fans there's an option to show location names in both English and Russian. ZOS definitely should make the same for official translations.

It is exactly the same scenario here in America. While our education system is probably substandard compared to yours, there is still no excuse for any American to not know the difference between "your" and "you're", "there" and "their" (and "they're"), "affect" vs. "effect", "a" vs. "an", "loser" vs. "looser", etc. Most of us went to school for at least 12 years... 12 years. If you're not capable of learning a basic concept over the course of 12 years of your life... then quite frankly, it's a miracle that you can even tie your own shoes and wipe yourself.

Just to prove my point, I'll write 2 versions of my post. One correctly and one with bad grammer. You can tell me which is easier to understand.
There, Their, They're...Learn them...That's my biggest pet peeve. If English isn't you native language, I can forgive some common mistakes. I'll even forgive obvious typos or misspellings of "commonly misspelled" words...I depend too much on spell check myself. I know how difficult the spelling rules are for some words.

What annoys me is when you write and sound like a 5th grader (Take our current US president for example). I didn't think we could get any worse than George W., but we did. For forum posts, the use of proper punctuation and breaking walls of text into paragraphs make for a much easier post to read. As far as game chat, I can understand using shortcuts, especially if you're trying to quickly say something in the middle of combat.

I treat game chat like twitter. Anything too long, and it won't get read. Most of the time I'm using voice chat, so rarely do I ever pay attention to in game chat. I usually have /zone disabled so I don't even see it.

The game is international, it is unreasonable to expect everyone to have the same understanding of the english language. As long as communication can take place, it's all good.
