Pointless progression?

As a returning player I found that I could not manage a group of mobs with my old nightblade toon which used to be veteran ranked but now has the championship points, yet destroyed the same mobs with a level 32 sorcerer I made and levelled over the week I had been back. Surprised at this I was told that now the game auto detects your level and sets the difficulty of mobs accordingly. Okay, good for grouping with different level toons, but what is the point of levelling a toon now? It all seems a bit of a generic grind fest for no reason. Why level if the mobs are always the same difficulty? There seems no feeling of progression anymore.

I wouldn't worry about it if I were you. The entire leveling process is about getting to max gear cap (currently 160CP) and then crafting/getting gear at that point to do endgame content. Before 160CP, you really want to use that time to learn how your class works, experiment with abilities, and get more skill points via quests/skyshards. Any gear that's around your level will work for questing/overworld exploration.

"Progression" in ESO really doesn't start until you are at max gear CP.

Word on the street is that the Horns of the Reach DLC is going to raise the gear cap to 180CP, making everyone's gear worthless and having to re-farm everything. Since you aren't at that point, you will be fine. Take it slow and just quest through each zone. Grab the shards and level your abilities - that's low-level "progression". If you have friends online with you, you can do some normal dungeons for extra skill points.

That's not how it works though. Mobs get progressively *harder* as you level up and you need to keep your gear up to date as well as invest in CP points once you hit level 50 in order to keep up with the mobs.

Once you hit the level cap you can concentrate on refining your character (using skills and CP) and upgrading your gear to legendary (and/or BiS if that's your thing) and you'll be able to gain a significant edge over the end-game mobs.

The progression is still there, it just has changed from what you were used to ...

Oh lord, the forums will explode if that word is true. I can't wait.

My NB stamblade experienced same issue, but they get much better after they are geared.
