What do you do if your name is already taken?

I tried to do that naming in advance thing. The problem is that my character's always end up wanting to name themselves. Who wants to have "Bob" as the name, then the character you end up with isn't a "Bob"? I know he isn't going to be happy, and I will have to make him die a horrible, and permanent, death as punishment for not being a "Bob". It is just too stressful. Much easier if they just tell me their name at the end. I just tell them to decide quickly.

I think the trick there is to choose the character along with the name.
Whenever I make a new character I do most of the designing before I even open the character creator. I take my starting point - the reason I want a new character - and build everything else around it. So even before I ever see them I have a fairly good idea of who they are and that influences my choice of name as much as (or sometimes more than) the game's lore and what I like the sound of.PC EU player | She/her/hers | PAWS (Positively Against Wrip-off Stuff) - Say No to Crown Crates!

✭Depends on the name. I might tweak the spelling if it won't look ridiculous, or look for synonyms if giving an argonian a common tongue name. If those don't do nicely, an entirely separate name it isIf you quote someone, and intend for them to see what you have said, be sure to Mention them with @[insert name].0 -
Invincible✭✭✭✭✭I am curious what people do when the great name they have designed is already taken. Did you just take a new completely different name, or come up with a unique way to still use the name you wanted? For me, I was disappointed that my name was already taken. I have been using it for a long time and would have loved to use it for ESO. I like using my real name Davor. Lots of people think it's a fake name, so in a world where people use fake names, I could use my real name. I have tried, Davorine and Davorkkiin for the characters of Morrowind and Skyrim, but just wasn't happy with it. Finally I figured out to us Davvor. The double vv just like in Vvardenfell.
So how did you get around when you wanted to use your name and it was already taken?
I logged in to character creation within 30 seconds of servers going online in 2014 and pretty much everything was already taken. I'm assuming the staff at zos reserved all the good names for their alts.3 -

✭✭✭✭✭I took this account from a family member when they decided they didn't want it and he named it so it would sound like his son Ingame . Only his Son hates PC and only plays ESO on Ps4 . I was going to name it somethings like Jungle Claws and he said I suck at names and to leave it . So now I am just use to this . I am still planning to make Jungle Claws one day because I don't care if I suck at names .1 -

I would delete this asap. I have seen zos ban an in game account within 12 hour hours of a guy saying and his wife play the same account....1 -

After that I learn to adapt, I've got a couple of names I can use as well as surnames to help differentiate. On top of that I'll sometimes just come up with a new name because sticking to the same name as I used 15-20 years ago seems silly, gotta move with the times.
A good example is where my old wow shaman's name from 2005 Makdarr, and turned it into Makenzie Darr for my Dragonknight, because the name seemed more appropriate for the game.0 -

It's not like it was something from a known series or anything, either, just weird coincidence. Irritating. So I came up with a variation on his surname. Still annoyed over it, it sort of nags at me.0 -
lygerseye✭✭✭✭✭In the case of ESO you can usually get around a taken single name by adding a second name.
Came to say the same thing... I like using more-friendly names, and in spite of the (somewhat) limited number of names available, by using two names I've never encountered a name combination that's already been taken.
