But, yes, I have been sitting in my office, waiting for some student with a 10:00 a.m. appointment who isn't going to get there until 10:45 or 11:00 and when he does show up, he'll have an excuse about how he got stuck in traffic in a city of approximately 60,000 people, 30,000 of whom attend the same University he does, or how someone - clearly more important than I - stopped to talk to him while he was on his way to an appointment he already knew he had or how his cat turned off his alarm and even broad daylight just wasn't enough to wake him up in time for him to make it to the appointment.

I'll look at him, consider giving him my lecture on the importance of punctuality, what it says about him as a responsible adult, and how the syllabus clearly states that class participation includes not wasting my time, then just skip it all as a lost cause, make a mental note to dock his grade, and return to reading the forums.
