If scaling made gear cap pointless then there would be no need to regrind for new equipment if the equipment CP was raised. The people who have golded out VMA sharpened weapons and golded monster equipment would not need to regrind for new gear because level scaling would take care of it and their schwag would perform just the same. But maybe I am wrong and still do not fully understand how the scaling works.

    Nope, you don't.

    ESO scales up, not down.

If your character level is CP140 and you are wearing CP140 gear, your stats will be maxed out. As soon as your player level starts rising above CP140, your stats start to diminish (you will see that the numbers on the tooltip begin to drop the more you over-level your gear).

Therefore, if your character level is CP160 but you are still wearing CP140 gear, your stats will be severely diminished. The only way to get max stats again would be to equip gear that matches your character level (which is CP160 in this case).

TLDR; If the gear does not match your character level, it will have diminished stats.

So, if the gear cap is raised to CP180, it will mean that everyone who is still wearing CP160 gear (and whose character level is higher than CP160) will see severely diminished stats (it would be the same as someone wearing CP140 gear right now instead of CP160)

Now I can totally understand how a person who is trying to be able to compete in leader board placement would not want to have to go through all the runs needed to get a "specific" traited item. But eventually, all MMO games increase the equipment/levels caps to a new ceiling to provide the playerbase with a sense of a new goal to reach with making thair toon more powerful. To me, the complaint about the endless seeming grind for specific items is due to how ZOS setup the RNG for this game and is worth complaining about. This is why i do not even try to get BiS gear because I do not have the time or inclination. That is also why I have no interest in even trying to be on any leaderboards either. I simply do not have the time to devote to ESO to run multiple runs through Dungeons/Trials/VMA to get that single four-leaf clover, mega-millions, powerball item that that is considered to be BiS for the FotM.

GW2 is the second most popular MMO on the market right now yet it has a static gear cap.

MMOs that introduce a higher gear cap do not have scaling. Instead, they introduce a new zone with higher level mobs. The only way to complete this new zone is to farm the new gear. When ESO launches a new zone, or trial, or dungeon, the mobs are not a higher level. They are at the same level as all other mobs in the game (due to scaling).

Therefore, if ZOS were to raise the gear cap in ESO, it would mean that you can no longer complete existing content in the game (or new content). In other MMOs, you can still complete existing content with your old gear (new gear is only needed to complete new content). This is why a gear cap increase will never happen. it doesn't make any sense. Creating grind for the sake of grind is how you lose players. WoW has a gear treadmill that unlocks new content. It's fundamentally different from how ESO works and the two simply cannot be compared.

If they were smart, they'd introduce cp180 gear. Everyone would be running like mad to get to it.

To keep this game relevant (reason the DLC are happening as it brings people back or keeps them from leaving) they need to keep introducing hooks to keep people on the line.

I'd say that since CP are still adding up (once past cp 630) and go into a pool for the time being, they plan on upping the limit again. Otherwise, I'd have to assume they'd have the hard cap at 210 for each tree i.e 210/210 instead of 215/210

Worst idea ever, if they raised the gear cap to 180, Id be outta here.

But then what would be the point of increasing the cap?

This game has scaling, which means that stats remain unchanged regardless of level. If you dealt 30k dps with CP160 gear, you will deal 30k dps with CP180 gear too (since that will be the new level everything scales to).

Games that increase gear levels don't have scaling.

wouldn't the (2), (3), (4) and (5) item bonuses be increased though for the new gear?

And mobs hp/ dmg etc... would go higher because of one tamriel.

So you'd grind cp 180, 200 gear or whatever and mobs would go to 180 or 200 and you'd be doing the exact same dmg as you would now, if you took 20s to kill a world boss it would if they increased gear.

Its just a waste of time, gold and mats.
