Apparently there was much frustration with the user base on the mathematical distribution of awards. This resulted in a drop of number of purchases. With all of the complaints about Nix hounds going on, Zenimax needs to learn from their competitors, if they want to stay in the game.

Not entirely equivalent, since there's a number of differences. Like, you can earn those things in game. And Hearthstone "no dupe Legendaries until you have them all". So not "no dupes", just no dupe Apex rewards.

You're correct, there are differences. Overwatch allows you to earn loot boxes in game and gifts you one at the start of special events. So they already had a less predatory rng crate system and their community was still so outraged that they made further changes.
That would kinda defeat the purpose of the gems than. Not against the idea but I think instead of getting a dupe item you can extract for gems you would just get more and more crappy crown potions.
I fully expect zos to "fix" the issue which will inevitably cause only duplicates to drop in crates. But, have no fear, they are working on a fix. It will be in the patch notes. I can't say it will be an accurate representation of a hot fix but, bless their hearts.
