Can Someone Explain Morrowind?

While I love the game, and absolutely adore the questing... I often times find myself confused at the ecosystem. I find myself wondering about the lore of it all, and why things are the way that they are.

For example: Why are there so many mushrooms everywhere? What is a shalk, and why do they look like beetles? What is up with the scribs and nixes? Are they bugs/insects, or are they monsters/aliens? Why are there so many things based on fire? Why are stilt thingies so damn freaky looking and odd? Why is Vivec both gold and blue? He reminds me of that 1 boss from an old Street Fighter game. What exactly are houses, and are they like clans/brotherhoods? What exactly is the tribunal?

Those are the types of things I'm curious about, as I never played the original Morrowind game. Skyrim was my first Elder Scrolls title. Thanks in advance to anyone who can clear all these things up for me.

Vivec is both Chimer and Dunmer--which is why he has different colored skin on two sides. But a lore junkie can explain that in further detail.

    The Street Fighter character you are probably thinking of is Gil from Street Fighter 3rd Strike;

This character, is like you said, a boss character from that series.

    Morrowind Lore

Some of the things you ask are explained in the Ebonheart Pact storyline, and some in the Morrowind chapter storyline.
Mushroom/nix/shalk/silt striders - native flora and fauna to the biome that Morrowind is in. It is kind of an alien biome in terms of our real world, but it's no more strange in The Elder Scrolls than a jungle in Asia is in the real world.

Lord Vivec, a member of the Tribunal (alongside Sotha-Sil and Almalexia) is both blue and gold because he was a Chimer - the ascendants of the Dunmer - when Azura (Daedric Prince of Dusk and Dawn) cursed the Chimer for betraying Lord Nerevar, the Chimer king, in their quest to attain god-hood. At the very moment they struck the Heart of Lorkhan (the heart of a real "god") with tools crafted by the Dwemeri, Azura appeared and proclaimed a prophecy that Lord Nerevar would reincarnate and end their rule (TES III: Morrowind) - at the same time cursing the three and all of their kind. Vivec is half Chimer and half Dunmer because he represents the balance of the Tribunal. Almalexia is all golden as the Chimer - representing the past, and Sotha-Sil is all greyish as the Dunmer - representing the future. Or so people say.

    Some good lore reading:

Yeah, the character I was thinking about. I believe he was also a playable character at 1 point as well. Also, the Chimer are like "god elves", correct? I thought they were all eradicated and made into Falmer. Or was that the Snow Elves that I'm thinking about...?

Fungus is one of the dominant plant life on Vvardenfell, and the Telvanni especially have taken a particular, albeit universally recognized as odd, liking to Mushrooms. The Lore doesn't give a concrete reason behind this.

You answered your own question. A Shalk is a Beetle with a natural affinity for Heat/Fire.

Scribs are baby Kwama. Nixes are a predatory pack "animal". Both are types of Insect, but in Tamriel fashion, Insects here are huge compared to real world.

Vvardenfell is an active volcanic island. That's why fire and lava is everywhere.

Silt Striders are just gigantic insects.

I believe those are merely Tattoos on Vivec.

The Great Dunmer Houses are kinda like modern Tribes, but act more like Organizations that Dunmer families align with. They each act like sovereign states within the Dunmer Nation, with the Tribunal acting as the executive government of all Dunmer. The Tribunal is basically Almalexia, Vivec, and Sotha Sil acting as "Living Gods" who rule over all Dunmer, (minus Ashlanders). After the Battle of Red Mountain, when the Dwemer disappeared and the three gained their Divine Energy from Lorkhan's Heart, they were seen as Gods by the Dunmer people, and of course, they took full advantage of this reverence, slipping easily into the role of God and Lord over their people, thus, becoming the Tribunal.

Speaking as a lore junkie, that pretty much nailed it. :D The Chimer race--who were basically heretics who left Summerset when the Altmer were Aldmer, and thus looked a lot like shorter Altmer--were transformed into the gray-skinned Dunmer because of... let's say shenanigans involving the Tribunal, Nerevar Indoril, and the Dwemer. It's complicated.

Suffice to say that TES III: Morrowind was a trippy game... in many ways specifically to set it apart from all the other fantasy games out at the time. One of the game's devs was notorious for his bizarre, out-of-the-box ideas, and it really showed. If you want to justify the weirdness of the ecosystem, it seems like the island nature of Vvardenfell let it grow a fairly unique ecosysem... namely, one devoid of mammals, so the ecosystem was taken over by insects and reptiles. And as for the fire critters? Blame magic, the volcano, CHIM, or Uncle Sheo for those. These sort of things just are part of the area, so don't break your brain too much trying to work out the logistics.

As for the Houses... the Great Houses are basically the primary governing bodies. Think of them like the Houses in Game of Thrones, where they're political bodies that control certain regions. Many Housemates are blood-related, but you can be inducted into the Great House if current members find that your actions line up with their philosophy.

Just google Morrowind lore, and check out the UESP Shogunami linked. There are plenty of essays, videos, and library entries around. It doesn't hurt to actually read the in-game books and listen to the dialogue either. ;)

Peregrine Huntress, bosmer hunter: "Who is forcing me to stay inside, and where can I find them?"
Lorenyawe, altmer mechanist: "And why would I want to go outside in the first place? Too much to be done in the workshop."
Lorelai Magpie, breton master thief: "I'd go nuts. Lucky for me, I have a little experience sneaking out!"
Rasheda the Burning Heart, redguard knight: "I would continue my training to keep my skills sharp."

Yngva Stormhammer, nord bandit (reformed...ish): "I hate being inside even when I'm not forced to be. GET. ME. OUT."
Madam Argentia, vampire dunmer aristocrat: "I suppose it would be more of the same. I have a rather... contentious relationship with the sun."
Mazie gra-Bolga, orc scout: "Uh... I'd have to house train my bear..."
Felicia the Wanderer, imperial witch-for-hire: "What Lorelai said."
Calico Jaka-dra, retired khajiit pirate: "This one would like a rest from her grand adventures. Her jewel shop runs out of stock!"
Shimmerbeam, blind altmer psijic: "Provided that I am confined to Artaeum, I do not think I will want for things to occupy my time."
Shauna Blackfire, redguard necromancer: "Sounds like paradise. I hate people."
Kirniel the Undying, cursed bosmer warrior: "I would feel useless, not being able to fight."

And killed Nerevar. Can't forget that :)

Dunmers are dark-blue, because of Azura's curse, yep. Vivec's golden half is what Dunmers looked liked before.

And Tribunal is what game tells you it is: living gods Vivec, Sotha Sil and Almalexia. Were ordinary Chimers, but then their whole company (Vivec, Sotha, Alma, Nerevarin, Vorin Dagoth aka Dagoth Ur) found Lorkhan's heart. It actually does exist, not a myth. Nerevar was against using it, because god powers + mortal minds = dangerous combination. But V, S and A decided that they can do so much good for Morrowind with those powers and... well... one man's life is nothing in comparison with greater good. They served Nerevar, btw. Nerevar was the hero of a time, the Hortator and unifier of Chimers and Dwemers. V, S and A were his friends and councillors.

As a result, Nerevar is dead, Vorin is falsely accused of it, three mortals become living gods. And Morrowind did thrive under them... in some sense. So they were right... in some sense. But s**t gets real, because Vorin holds a grudge, Azura holds a grudge (Nerevar was her chosen and favorite) and... well... you can only for so long lie that you ascended through some virtue, not actually betrayal.

The only real difference between a chimer and a dunmer is their color (like what kind of curse is that?!)

Anyway, tribunal not really Gods, just suped up elves from a spirit's heart (true God's are Akatosh, Talos after Ascension, and Sithis) lork is not really a spirit but more of a being that is the anthesis of spirits created by Sithis to trick the spirits into "dying"

But yeah his heart powers up people around it, Dwemer wanted to use it to become gods too

the events of the original morrowind involve the power of the tribunal fading and dagoth ur and the 6th house returning and a divine plague known as corpus disease. Dunmer are b@stard cousins of racially superior high elves. They abandon the true faith to become devil worshippers. Feeling they didn't commit enough apostasy for one day, they do it again by ditching their demon gods to worship a trio of false gods. They get cursed to look like orcs. The end.

It existed long before this update :) The plot of original Morrowind is all about it.

The main antagonist is Dagoth Ur (Vorin Dagoth), who blocked the Red Mountain to deny Tribunal more power (Heart of Lorkhan lies beneath Red Mountain). He also does some nasty stuff like Corprus, etc and generally slowly destroys Morrowind. So yeah, you - main protagonist, Nerevarine, the true reincarnation of Nerevar - have to kill him. Though the sad truth is that he isn't responsible for the s**t he did. He only wanted to guard Heart of Lorkhan for Nerevarine - again, you, his beloved lord Nerevar reborn - and from traitors. Vorin was the only one who actuallyt was loyal to Nerevar from the beginning until the end. But HoL is very powerful and simply being near it drove Vorin mad. He was stuck there for decades, if memory serves, guarding it. Literally went mad, nothing there was his fault.

Also, Tribunal does fall apart. Because yep - this power wasn't meant for mortals. Almalexia goes nuts and kills Sotha, Nerevarine - you - kills Almalexia. Only Vivec remains in the end.

Dunmer are one of the most fascinating political races in Tamriel. I mean the other races do have their fair share of politics sure, but Dunmer dials that all the way up to 10. The fact they that have their 'own' exclusive Assassination club to take out any one(even fellow Dunmer) who stands in the Great Houses way, makes their race extremely scary to cross even in a superficial level!

Shalk are just a big ol' species of fiery beetle, nothing more to it than that. They had a much less impressive graphic back in TES3.
    latest?cb=20160708181939

Nix Hounds and Kwama are insect-inspired, not alien in a Mulder and Scully sense (though they certainly are "alien" as in "foreign"-looking). The whole Morrowind ecology (at least for Vvardenfell) is heavy on insects, reptiles, and fungi, the the point that in TES3 there are exactly zero mammalian creatures that aren't imported (rats, specifically). There are some herbaceous plants and lichens, though, even in TES3. We see a greater diversity in this era because Red Mountain hasn't been erupting as much and spewing ash and Blight (a specific TES3 disease thing) so a greater variety of species can survive. Mind you, the world was actually "created" so the reason for these ecological curiosities is almost certainly relegated to the tastes of whatever Dawn Era beings formed Morrowind and Vvardenfell island as opposed to any kind of evolutionary process.

It should also be noted that it's hard to tell what was a hardline feature of TES3 versus a limitation of the game. For instance, we see a HUGE variety of mushrooms in the ESO version of Vvardenfell as compared to TES3, some of them being less alien-looking and more just kinda gross. Is this because they just couldn't fit that in TES3, or was it an intentional design decision for different aesthetic reasons? Who knows! Either way it still fits the whole "more biodiversity in pre-blight Vvardenfell" line of reasoning so it's not a big deal, it just might affect some peoples' nostalgia value since it's not a 1-to-1 carbon copy of everything TES3. I personally think they did a great job with 99% of the assets, geography, lore, etc. and can forgive the 1% I find objectionable because screw it I'm here to have fun and it's just not that big of a deal.

The very short way of saying this is, the Dark Brotherhood are a heretical offshoot of the Morag Tong. The Morag Tong worship (kinda) Mephala. It's not entirely inaccurate to characterize them as one of the better organized Daedric Cults in the setting. The Dark Brotherhood eschews the legal framework that enshrines the Morag Tong in Morrowind.

Probably worth pointing out that Lorkhan is a god, in the same sense as Akatosh, and the other divines. Technically, Talos doesn't count when you're listing them for The Second Era. But, this gets into one of the more intricate parts of the setting's metaphysics.

The Divines, Lorkhan, and the Daedric princes are all, basically, the same beings. Not the same individuals, but still. In at least two cases (Meridia and Trinimac/Malacath), there's a legitimate question of which one they actually are. The difference between these two groups is... it's probably most accurate to describe it as a mix of political and philosophical. Rather than these things being fundamentally different kinds of beings.

Anyway, Lorkhan is The Lost God, or The God of Creation. He was directly responsible for creating the universe, or taking the first steps towards that, and convincing the other Divines to chip in and help (including a lot of minor ones that just don't pop up in the lore). The artifact that the Tribunal pulls their power from may, in fact, be his heart... or it could just be some extremely potent source of power.

I would like to point out that Lorkhan tricked other divines into creating Nirn :) Which is exactly why we have his heart :) It was torn from his "body". Lorkhan was roughly beaten up after creation of Nirn by others. Not killed - he can't be killed - but... well, he isn't recovering for a while :)

And source of Tribunal power is 100% Heart of Lorkhan, Azura confirms it :)

    Yeah, "tricked," is correct.

Wow... This stuff seems so damn fascinating and lit. It feels like Game of Thrones, but like more elf-based with all the betrayals and politics all about. I love it! See! This is what impresses me. The inner workings of all this, and the lore. And how all of it ties together. This is some good stuff with this update. It's like expanding upon a fan fiction here in this thread, without all the cringeworthy stuff in the mix. :p Keep the information flowing, everyone. And thank you very much! I definitely will have to hit-up that wiki you guys are mentioning, and really get the studying.

Hit up your Eidetic Memory/Shalidor's Library in your quest journal and start reading the books you've picked up over time.

These books is where most of the lore comes from. The games (this one or any of the single player titles) can only story tell so much, and the books found in the game world fills in many of the holes.

Stormproof: Vibeke - 50 EP mDragonknight | Savi Dreloth - 50 EP Magsorc | Sadi Dreloth - 50 EP Magblade | Sigtric Stormaxe - 50 EP Stamsorc | Valora Dreloth - 50 EP Magplar | Sigtric the Unbearable 50 EP Stam Warden
Scrub: Chews-on-Beavers - 50 EP DK Tank | Vera the Wild - 50 EP magicka Warden | Sigtric the Axe - 50 EP Dragonknight Crafter | Sigtric the Blade - 50 EP Lost Nightblade | Sigtric the Savage - 50 EP magicka Templar | Vibeka Shadowblade - 50 Ep Stealthy Ganky Nightblade |

    Yeah, "tricked," is correct.

And tricked because he went against Sithis and wanted his own world which may or may not have been stolen from Mehrunes Dagon. And give the ability to lower spirits to be gods. Such as the psjiic thingy.

Sithis specifically created Lork to be "and ending" or essentially a being of "limitations"

He tricked the spirits by creating a world of limitations.

Sithis would say:. "Before all you jerks showed up we had a never ending cycle of different spirits coming and going, you jerks refuse to leave. I made Lork to convince you that you should be limited, but freakin instead he got all of you to make yet ANOTHER world, one capable of making people just like me! I hate you all".

Sithis then creates Man in attempt to wipe out all the Mer (probably the Towers too), again another failed plan of mass destruction.

Anu and the other (not Padomey) were the first true God's, but they got pwned leaving Akatosh and Sithis, from which all other spirits came (except like the hist and a few others)

    And oh so much more!

@Ch4mpTW, in case it hasn't become abundantly clear, TES's setting is bonkers.
