There seems to be a downward trend in the way pets perform, so let's take a gander at all the things that were wrong before, and all the problems that got introduced on top of the previous issues and annoyances, with the Morrowind patch.

Pre-Morrowind:
  • Bug - In areas with low ceilings, especially ramps like stairs, pets will sometimes vanish from the world and stop attacking.
  • Bug - Pets will sometimes clip into rocks and can't get back out.
  • Bug - Pets are not always sneaking when the caster is, making it incredibly obvious where they're "hidden".
  • Bug - A combination of the previous points sometimes causes the pets to keep the caster in combat for far longer than should be possible, "running from Nikel to Chalman on foot" long.
  • Annoyance - The Atronach doesn't move.
  • Annoyance - Pets can prevent the player from interacting with the environment and its inhabitants.
  • Annoyance - Pets fade in and fade out sporadically. Fixed with patch v3.1.0, Combat Fixes

Introduced with Morrowind:
  • Bug - In Cyrodiil, pets' bonus 5k will sometimes be unrecoverable and it must be resummoned to fix (I never noticed this happening before, only that they would sometimes drop 5k and you'd have to heal them. "Unrecoverable" here means healing spells, not health regeneration).
  • Annoyance - Pets no longer regenerate health. Changed with patch v3.0.10, Combat & Gameplay, pets gain full health when a fight ends. Still an annoyance.
  • Possible Bug/Annoyance - Heavy attacking agro functionality takes priority over Pet Command passive mode.
  • Possible Bug/Annoyance - Setting a pet to aggressive mode will agro the target immediately rather than on first contact. Fixed with patch v3.1.0, Combat Fixes
  • Annoyance - The Clannfear's heal for both parties in Cyrodiil no longer justifies the cost. Adjusted in patch v4.2.5, Combat & Gameplay

Even if we assume that the two possible bugs are indeed intended, that makes four new, solid annoyances to deal with on a fight-by-fight basis.

I'm speaking strictly from a Magicka Sorcerer perspective that primarily uses the Clannfear, Twilight, Atronach, and a Magicka Nightblade using Shades. I have about 1 hour of playtime with the Warden during the PTS so I'm oblivious to anything that's wonky with the bear so far. If there's more things functionally wrong or displeasing with pets that I might have missed, be sure to speak up so I can add it to the list.

At first, I was like, "what?! Pet bugs?! That you summon?!"

    Then I understood.

Don't forget the change introduced in Homesread that made pets much worse at holding aggro.

If your talking about the warden pet bear. I got a few for you to add. But my current biggest gripe with them is this one as it's been making questing in the new region ever more troublesome.
    • Bear will block or stand over npcs. Making it difficult to be able to interact with them.

This happens with the Twilight Matriarch too, probably because of how big their hitboxes are.

    I'd like to add:
    - refusing to attack when I'm attacking, sometimes
    - disappearing out of sight after a fight

Both bugs do happen quite often for me (Clannfear).
