One thing I don't understand - this happens strangely often - is I am in a delve, I just killed the boss - ie. I finished the delve. Other player there sends blind group invite - WHY? We just finished that activity.
I love grouping with friends, but often turn down blind invites from people I don't know - often when I'm doing stuff solo I'm doing IRL stuff at the same time and regularly go afk, I don't want to inflict my strange pottering about and pauses in play on anyone else

Epona was a Romano-Celtic goddess dating back to around 1800 to 2000 years before computer games were invented.
An addon could do that. As far as I know there is none with that function, but you could get in touch with addon developers on ESOUI.com and ask nicely. Given you're not on console, in that case you're doomed.
Being in a different MMO's I really feel like ESO is completely antisocial game and I do understand and support OP on this.
Which is another thing I love about ESO compared to the other MMORPGs on the market. You really don't need to group or socialize with other people, in order to be successful and have fun. Other MMOs RIP you if you are anti social.
1. Have 0 players on your friends list
2. Buy a house
3. Don't give anyone access rights
4. RP there all day
I wonder what makes people like the op (and me) not want to group..?
I could tell you - but I'm too polite.
Nobody can force you to. If clicking "decline" is such a big annoyance that you ask for an auto-decline ... I don't know what to say really. As has been mentioned, you can set your status to offline as well.

Regarding the actual content of the OP, I prefer the direct invite since it seems unlikely I would ever notice the question in chat. Usually, but the time I notice a message in chat, the person is nowhere to be found. I also don't want to have to type in chat. I find it very annoying and disruptive.
I remember reading how in a crowded fast food joint short on seating Americans consider it polite to ask "is this seat taken" or "do you mind if I sit here" before sitting near someone while British consider it polite to not disturb the person before sitting. Both customs are quite reasonable, but either could annoying a high maintenance individual who expects people to do things his or her way.
