Old people questions 1: What's all the rushing about?

I'm an older person who's new-ish to MMOs...ESO is the third one I've played, but I count it as a first in many ways as I am given to understand Turbine/SSG MMOs don't really represent a "normal" MMO environment. So I've been playing since the last free trial promotion, and I decided to just ask about some things that I am seeing in the game. I'd like to be clear that I am not complaining, I just honestly would like to know about some things. Here's the one that's on my mind today:

Why do people rush so hard to get through a delve?

I see people racing through at top speed, drawing mobs as they go and ignoring them until they give up, and they go straight to the boss (or the skyshard) and then boom done and then race back out. A few might loot a little here and there, but mostly I see folks going as fast as possible. It doesn't affect me too much as I've learned to be wary of sudden respawns, that is just part of the game, but I would like to know the reason behind it. Is it a number-crunching thing with xp from fighting incidental mobs being not worth the time spent fighting them? Or is it about exploration achievements and trying to get them done fast?

My guess is that nobody has time for anything these days. It's how i see it even in real life. People always rush.

Personally i do the same. I work 2 jobs, study for school, go to gym and I try to get things done ingame as well. Although if I did have extra time I'd take it slow to enjoy the game better. It's just not really an option and i bet there's a lot of people like me.

Also it could just be a second character that people just want to max asap.

When you've done the same delve 10 times or more over the course of 3 years it becomes a bit boring taking your time with it.

Probably there for the boss, the skyshard, possibly a daily.

The mobs are generally just a nuisance. They don't provide good loot, XP's, or challenge. Ignoring them and letting them reset at least lets them remain for those that do wish to take their time.

Walking in and melting adds, when that's not what you're after, potentially detracts from the people that are there for that experience.

Plus it loses the nuance when you've already done it X number of times.
Just because you don't like the way something is doesn't necessarily make it wrong...

    Earn it.

It's the mentality of many gamers these days. Me? I take my time and solo as much as possible because of this. I never do the Dungeon Finder because it's always a rat race through whatever dungeon it is and a lot of the time they are not what they have selected on the G.F. Instead of a Tank, Healer, etc...many people just lie and pick anything that gets them into a random group and then it's RUN RUN RUN as fast as possible. Sorry, this isn't fun at all. You will see massive groups of Players (BOTS??) running from dolmen to dolmen over and over doing just that. Same for Public dungeons and when using the before mentioned Group Finder.

In the guilds I'm in we often have to tone down new members that have this "RUN RUN RUN" mentality when doing Undaunted Pledges. They run ahead of the Tank and die in heavy mobs/bosses while the rest of the group is moving steadily in the dungeon. You would think they would get it when they die but often they don't. They rez and do it again....and again...and again. If the new player doesn't get it after we explain to him/her multiple times then that person often doesn't get invited to run Pledges anymore and ends up back in the Group Finder doing his/her "RUN RUN RUN" routine through dungeons. And we usually are all in VOIP comms so it isn't like they don't know not to run ahead and do this.

A lot of people are just leveling alts/doing delve dalies. You need skyshards for skillpoints on a new character and when you have 50 delves to go to before you can actually do the content you want to on this toon(even for people who do like exploring - you don't really make character 2/3/4/10 to explore a delve all over again, you make it to try out a new class/build in PvP or more challenging aspects of PvE than delves)...you kind of just wanna get it done asap XD

    Several possible reasons.

    1) The game has been out for 3 years now. People have like... 10+ chars. Going through a delve for a first time is exciting. For a 100th time? Mildly speaking... not so much.

    2) Honestly? Delves are dull as hell. Like...

As a "partly try-hard" person who likes group play, I have a trial which starts at 20.00PM, I have some PvE guild event, I don't have time for a... what? Boring solo instance?

As a "casual lore-nerd" (you can be both, yes ;) ), it's... pretty much the same. It's a solo "get skyshard, kill the boss" instance with some totally boring quest "Bring me N amount of X" from an equally boring NPC. Why would I bother to do it thoughtfully, if I still have Cadwell Silver and Gold unfinished? Some actual story and dialogues?

Like... I can understand many things, but... Delves? What the hell is interesting about them?

Here's my reason for rushing through a delve this week:

I'm on my main Templar that I've been playing since launch. I had 306 skill points (all spent), and needed another to morph a skill. I'm mainly a PvPer, so I just want my skill point so I can get back to the fighting.

I went to Hew's Bane, found the first delve with a Skyshard, and hauled butt right to it. Killed the boss on my way out for giggles since it takes 3 seconds.

When you've been playing the game for a long time, some of the normal encounters like delves are just a road bump to where you want to be. A certain build, need a skillpoint, etc. You just want to get it out of the way and get back to what you were doing. I remember as a newer player, ever delve was interesting and unique, and I took my time in them.

I'm also not young(32 years old), but I also rush. My reason is I only play in the evenings after work and weekends, and I have certain things I feel I need to achieve before I log off. In about 3 hours a day I have to squeeze in filling my 150 trader slots, vMA, usually 4 daily dungeons, at least 2 delve quests, craglorn dailies, and farming at least 45 mins to keep my stock up. Not to mention crafting writs and trait research. It's a lot to fit into 3 hours, that's why I speed through everything. It's a issue with my limited playtime and so much to do...

On my first character I took my time, and have completed well over one thousand different quests. Really drunk in the experience and world. But then the reality of me being an altoholic kicks in.... So when leveling a new class, these things become an ends to a means. At that point not even Speedy Gonzalez could keep up.

32 years old..... not young? I laughed when I read that! I am more than twice your age and, believe me, 32 is young.

Back on topic...........I am retired and have plenty of time to play but I play by mood. Some days I don't feel like dealing with the mobs so I run by them to get the shard and boss. Other days I will fight every mob, read every book, and look in every crate, barrel, whatever. Also, I've been playing for a couple of years so I have done all the delves more than several times.

If I'm in a delve it's likely I'm there for the skyshard and I'll kill the boss for the easy XP. Skyshard hunting is tedious and I'd like to get to the part of the game I enjoy, which happens to be raiding and PvP. I took my time with quests and exploration on my first character but doing it again just doesn't appeal to me.

Erm... That's dungeon. Blessed Crucible is a dungeon.

Delves are simply overworld caves, mines, tombs, etc, with skyshard and boring boss with no interesting mechanics :)

Dungeons I can understand - they are interesting, some - very beautiful (Vaults of Madness are my favorite)... And if you're bored, you can always PUG for spicy experience :D

But delves? Like... Imo, absolutely unfun. I go in, I take skyshard, I go out. Nothing to see there :/

Some delves have a daily associated with them. You'll probably realize when you've entered one of them, because there will be far more players in it than you're used to seeing. As a result, you'll also see players burning through it at full speed (either killing the mobs or skipping them), because they're there to get the dailiy completed as quickly as possible, rather than simply for the delve itself.

Also, if you're running that daily for extended periods of time, trying to complete the Draugr motif, you'll get pretty burnt out on some of the individual delves.

The only time I rush is when there are other people in there just ahead of me. Otherwise they kill everything and I don't get xp. Otherwise if I am the only one, which often happens late at night, I am in there 20-30 minutes picking up everything. I do this even if its the second time through.

People could be rushing because they just want to get through it and move on, or perhaps they have been through it before and are just farming.

it is possible for people to enjoy this game differently to you. i think it's amazing speedrunning dungeons i've already done, it helps keep things fresh if i'm challenging myself like that

or you know. maybe it's because we rushers are all young and inconsiderate children who don't appreciate anything, i guess. i know that's what a lot of you want to say

For me it depends on the mood I'm in, and how I want to play that day. I enjoy a lot of different aspects of the game. I love the storylines and immersive feeling of it all, so sometime I'll go all out to improve that experience, stop and read every lorebook, be in first-person (or 3rd person with FOV and vertical height all the way down for a cinematic eye-level over the shoulder view, more cinematic that way), take my time and smell the roses, see the scenery.

Other times, with other characters, I'll be playing them for a different reason, leveling up for group dungeons, or trials, or something, or maybe an achievement collector character. For them I just enjoy blasting through everything. It's especially fun on my nightblade to just ambush every enemy from far away, teleporting across the delve in little spurts.

I seem to do more of the second nowadays that I've done most of the quests. I also have a lot less time than I did a couple years ago when the first example made up like 90% of what I did.

I'm quite a bit on the older side. Although I'm a stop and smell the roses type of gal, I do rush the delves if I'm doing a daily quest. Awhile back I was farming motifs on all my characters so I would do the undaunted quest on all characters each day. My goal was to get in and out as quickly as possible.

The first time through a delve though, I would get all the books, open all the crates, etc. I still stop and open a few crates and certainly chests if I see them though.

In dungeon groups though, I hate rushing, especially if I'm doing a quest on a character.
