Mutual respect and language use on Eso

After i have been on the internet in almost 25 years now I am still sometimes in shock about what people can say here in the forums, both towards Zos or other players.

It is an interesting phenomena that some, when they enjoy the relativele anonymous presence in the internet, act in a different way as they should do in real life.
It is appaling what kind of language is been used both inworld as in our forum here towards Zos or other users.
Ofcourse it is great to come with feed back here or complaines but I am sure that people never would use that tone and language in real life towards people who work in a shop or company as they use here.

Also the use of the `F-word`, a real sign of cultural degradation, can be found almost everywhere in Eso and thats for me the reason that I never use TS, so Ill be spared of hearing it. The `F-word` is giving a clear sign of disrecpect to all of us woman.

And there we are again: mutual respect...

The bottumline here is ofcourse: if you want to be treated with respect than please treat others with respect. It is that simple. Treat other players with respect and Zos also.
Come with your complaines and feed back in a descent way and be respected because doing so.
Grow up and be an respected person, both here and in real life.

Hmmmm. I work in a shop and I can say that people do speak that way. Very occasionally to me and sometimes to my staff. It isn't quite as prevalent as the forum trash talking, but it happens for sure.
I think there is just a higher percentage of self involved twaddles in the world than there used to be.

I think the moderators do a solid job of keeping this forum clean, but reminders never hurt.

I'm not sure what system you play on, but on console we have a language filter to block words like the f-word. Hopefully you can make use of it on the system you are on. Chat is another issue entirely. I usually don't chat unless I know the players.

You're here complaining about people using vulgar language in a forum dedicated to a video game because you're a woman?

And excuse me, but maybe you should check your privilege. As a proud Australian my guild and I do use often profane language by your standards, being someone whose been on the internet for 25 years (40yrs+ old?) Im sure you've seen more than just that word used. Stop trying to oppress my culture.

Also, y u no profanity filter? Its on by default, in my opinion if you turn that off, you're accepting all that the internet brings! <3

Profanity is culturally subjective. Not just on the scale of any given language, but also within micro societies. The use of explatives has nothing to do with an individuals character, honor, or intelligentce. I find somebody willing to cast blanket judgement on individuals far more telling about respect than somebody who likes to drop the f-bomb.

I was sitting here reading and drinking my morning tea, thinking "Mhm, mhm, totally agree" then suddenly: "The `F-word` is giving a clear sign of disrecpect to all of us woman." Whaaat?...

Bad language isn't something ghat generally bothers me any more, I try to avoid using it myself when I can but I think we've just reached a place in society's evolution now where r the first word is just becoming a meaningless word for adding emphasis.

As for the rude behaviour of people online I kind of find it entertaining that people can be so angry and upset over a video game. Demanding devs jobs or telling players to go die etc.

Those people will have a real shock when they reach some obstacles in the real world.

The F-word is an invective, however it is also an expletive . It's a filler word that can be used to add emphasis, and has multiple utilities in speech. "[snip] yes!" versus "[snip] them!". It's foul language, but it's not always an explicit insult. These days, when it comes to slurs "[snip]" is just a step up from "[snip]" or damnation which most people don't even consider to be bad language. "[snip]" is well on its way to becoming the same.

Unlike many other cuss words, the f-word specifically is gender neutral.

I get what you're trying to say, OP. However, there were better ways to say it and more gendered slurs to focus on.

o.O I'm a girl and I can't wrap my mind around f-word somehow being offensive to all the women out there. The b-word, s-word, w-word and a couples others(why is English so unimaginatively poor on male bad words?), perhaps, but f-one? This one seems very politically correct in the sense of having to do with genders equally :p

As for the general sentiment, I have an interesting attitude to English swearing. It's hard for me to judge as it's not my native language and perhaps my perception is skewed, but in my general understanding, and it doesn't just come from ESO or the internet, English is a lot free-er with the use of "bad" words than my own language is. Part of it is probably I haven't been grown up being told these words are bad, I learnt them lateron so tbh I just find them amusing. But it's something I see even in popular non pg 18 movies where "oh %#^%*!" gets translated to "oh my god" in my language lol. I don't swear often but I'm actually more likely to swear in English than my own language, even in rl lol.

I don't like people who use swear words as repacement for things like "umm", "well" and the like in their speech all the time, it's unimaginative and pointless and makes them simply sound uncultural rather than the "cool kid" they must be trying to be, but in the end of the day they're just words. Directly and personally using these words to describe someone is indeed rude, but honestly if my no death gets ruined by aoe I clearly wasn't in and I yell "ZENIMAX FIX YOU %#^*$#&!$ GAME!!!" to either myself, voicechat or people on forums in a rant lateron, I fail to see how it's disrespectful to you personally and all the women in general. These words aren't some magic evil that came out of nowhere, they're just words we decided to call bad so we have a way to vent our frustration, and that's how they should be used.

@Magdalina Not using 'f' as a filler word to 'look cool'. What's cool about spacing one's speach with filler words. Using 'umm' makes one look a bit slow. 'like' puts one in the 'stuck-in-teens' category. Dead air '...' confuses people into wondering whether the sentence/thought ended. Not spacing at all makes one sound like an off-the-rails train (read: new york speech). And 'f' might put one on the bad side of folks who dont-take-kindly-to-cussin'.

Don't assume people want to be 'edgy' when they have some ingrained filler language. I have long since moved on from the part of my life where I thought people that didn't like 'cursewords' were spineless adult-children. Yet those same people do not often return the favor of giving up the useless offense over minor differences in speech, that we may just speak. You say 'umm', I say 'f-in'.
