I tried joining couple guilds that were 200 and 450 members respectively. I did not enjoy the experience at all. It was almost exactly like a zone chat, except zone chat was chattier. I will probably either remain guildless but look for temporary companions in alliance war, dungeons and what not, a perfectly viable option it seems, or in the long run create my own guild, albeit unlikely, and limit the guild to 20-40 players and foster more intimate setting with roster being periodically refreshed with active players. I've ran many successful guilds but it really is a lot of work and baby sitting to be honest, so I prefer not to run one again but hey, if it's totally casual it might be alright. I also plan on crafting all of my own gears even if it takes me over a year to do it :)

Lol. ESO has been a single person MMO since before launch. They occasionally put in group required content, which players yell at until it gets nerfted into Oblivion, where a skilled solo player can solo 4-man content.
Power level to CP160 in a week:
Where is the end game? You just played it.
Why don't I have 300+ skill points? Because you skipped content along the way.
    Where is new content? Sigh.

I am actually in 3 guilds so I can trade and craft, but as far as play goes - I'm solo 99% of the time.

I have turned off all chat to get the serenity of a single player game on many, many occasions.

The glory of a MMO like this one - you get the choice.

Early Access player here. My early guilds all petered out. But that was okay, because there was plenty of solo content, it was still possible to get better and better doing solo stuff, and I took 10 months off so had lots of DLC content waiting for me when I got back.

Recently, I finally found a guild of friendly and helpful people with little-to-no drama and a real willingness to pitch in and help each other out. I've stepped up the amount of group stuff I do by a decent margin. And, as a freelancer with a job about to end, I'm expecting to start doing even more group stuff (unless I find work again really quickly).

But I still spend a lot of time solo, and I enjoy the heck out of it. I kind of like having a solo game where I can get help from other players for hard stuff and jump in from time to time for even harder stuff. It feels like a good balance to me, but having a good guild is a big part of that.

I play solo, too. I enjoy seeing other players in the world, but I don't really want to interact with them much, except for a rare instance when I team up with someone random to do a dungeon or world boss. Otherwise, I'm happy playing alone. If an MMO forced group play onto people, I wouldn't play it.

Sometimes being in an MMO is really amazing, though, even if you aren't grouped with anybody. An example that springs to mind is one time when I was in Daggerfall (or was it Wayrest?) at night, and a bunch of people decided to have a party of sorts. They were in the middle of everything, and were all using the same mementos at more or less the same time to create a ruckus. It was pretty fun, and yes, they attracted a crowd.

Yeah, I prefer to play "solo" but with people as background. I am in guilds, and chat in the guilds, but generally ignore zone chat. All the people running around makes the world more alive, which is why the single player games (Skyrim) are so lonely now. I can barely stand to play them, and have to have a couple NPC companions following me around just to make it seem like I am not the only person there.

I started out playing as single player. Because I never played MMOs before. I didn't have a 360 anymore and I really needed an Elder Scorlls fix. Actually played all alone from level 1 to VR16.

In the sewers is where I met the first guild I joined and man I really wished I had jumped into the social part of the game earlier. However every now and then I do enjoy just being solo as I wonder the map with chat turned off.

Except for the one time I dipped my toes into that pledge thingy I played the game solo and have so since launch. That's just how I prefere to play ESO. Don't care about pledges, pvp, rp and soloing dolmens is no problem at all so I never feel the need to play with anyone else.

Yes, sort of. I play this game as a world with other people in it. Sometimes we meet up and we might group up, or RP, or craft or just chat. I've been in some good guilds over the years.

But this "MMO = Group Content" rubbish? Or worse, "MMO = PvP/endgame"? Minotaur dung. I've been playing these things since they were text based. Those two concepts can be dropped in a hole as far as I am concerned.

I'm here because ESO offers a scale/scope way beyond Oblivion/Skyrim - that is, a bigger sandbox. The fact that it is multiplayer is, overall, a drawback but one I've reasonably adjusted to. I enjoy not having to fret and manage a tempermental load order of mods and tweaks like I did with Oblivion/Skyrim. I also like that instead of fretting when things break, I go get a cup of coffee and let Zen fix it.

I find grouping very unimmersive, as I focus on the players instead of the game and groups move too fast. The primary reason I generally avoid formal grouping though is that I guard my time jealously. If I want to bail out of the game on a moment's notice if something real world comes up, and I want to be able to comfortably do so. If grouped, I would feel very badly bailing out in the middle of a dungeon. Simply not a position I want to be in.

One aspect of an MMO that I like is that my character has really blossomed as a healer - and it takes other players for that to work. That said, her healing/support is mostly informally just running the same quest / dungeon as one or more others on pretty much a random basis. Or joining in with others taking down a WB or dolmen.

The biggest drawback to me of the MMO side of things is skills changing/nerfing due to perceived reasons that have nothing to do with me as a mostly solo player.

They had Craglorn, had even talked about another group-oriented zone, but they then accepted that Craglorn was a miserable failure, and they even joked about how, 'Only about 12 people went there' but they hadn't even been to it on the Live server (so much for them playing their own game when they readily admit they don't even visit all zones on Live). So with that, they cancelled all future plans for group zones and turned Craglorn into a mostly soloable area.

The days of MMO meaning 'Group Content' are over. Game Developers are realizing that with every console and PC internet connected, a large majority of them want to play online games but DO NOT want to be forced to group with others. Thus, they've found a huge untapped market to develop content for. ESO is probably the biggest MMO catering to solo players, but I expect many more will follow.

I played solo from the start to about 120 cp ish.

Then I randomly decided to join a guild from zone chat....while I was struggling in craglorn.

I was playing PVP because I didn't want to run my first character through the other alliance stories, there I learnt to type "looking for group" because actually playing PVP solo is hard work. then one of those groups invited me to their guild.

Then I learnt how selling things worked for guilds, even though it was only to my other guildmates... Then one of the trade guilds I had bought things and a zone chat ad and I join them.. (Then they lost their trader :'( ) and they have been great and I wouldn't go back and not join.

I have joined another zone chat guild as well a better one than the first one that is pretty dead.

Finding people to do group content is still a real struggle though so I am still mostly playing solo, even in these medium level guilds.

As far as I am concerned they could cut out all the MMO stuff and sell the game as Single Player Game and I'd be happy still. I play the Game because I love Elder Scrolls, the world, the playstyle, the story. I enjoy the game but play strictly solo, no guilds, no groups and I like it that way.

I mainly play alone but I will chat with guild members in the guild chat.

Sometimes I will do content with them but not very often (I have done SO normal twice, 2 vet dungeuns and a few normal pledges with guild members since I came back to ESO last November).

I will probably be more active and do more content once I have a Warden since that class seem really fun.

So many of my guildies went away from ESO that I am mostly alone nowadays. Not sure how much do I like being barely able to do dungeons with guild, but I guess I do enjoy fishing without being summoned to craft things, do ICP for 16th time in a row or similar. On the other hand, I hope more ppl return when Morrowind goes live.
