i think they have to do it eventually or else the in-game economy will someday crash, and that will most likely result in the death of the game. there has to be demand for things or else most people will not play.

Considering that they introduced scaling in One Tamriel, it is unlikely that they will ever increase the gear cap again (since everything would just scale to the new level and we would be back where we started). They could increase the gear cap to CP 600 tomorrow and the game would still feel exactly the same due to scaling. You wouldn't do any more damage than you do now, nor would enemies hit you any harder. Your experience in Tamriel would be 100% identical to what it is now.

Oh yea, it only works if you rub your belly and pat your head while saying it.

If they raise the gear cap (effectively making those weapons obsolete), the rage would be unparalleled. Re-farming trial sets, overland sets, undaunted sets, and dungeon sets at higher CP would be a tedious and time-consuming task, but it would be bearable for most serious gamers. Having to re-farm vMA weapons at a higher CP level though...that would just make people ragequit. I don't think that the endgame player base would accept it without a serious push-back.

Take WoW for instance. When new expansions hit that game, the gear cap is usually moved up along with a higher character level. Why should ESO not do this?
Perhaps if we allow crafters to upgrade gear, that would be a good start.
I heard in passing that ZOS is considering increasing the CP cap for gear. Please tell me it's not true, please don't tell me I'll have to PVE farm all of my gear again!!
Bolded bit is actually untrue. If gear level caps were increased, the stats would be, too. More stats = more damage.
