Your perspective only works because cleave is also a huge part of that single target DPS and overall DPS is enough to kill adds fast enough without focusing on them.
If it wasn't possible to ignore the adds and the mechanics was different (and we'll see that new trial), that wouldn't even be a question.
The correct answer - single target is more important provided you have enough cleave to kill adds fast enough so that the group can survive without problems. If the aoe portion doesn't reach a certain threshold, then the ST part wouldn't be as important.
I answered what I answered just cause there's no right answer but it's the only answer that acknowledges the importance of aoeIt has to be high enough. Right now fights are designed such that we don't make any choice between aoe and single target - we just press the same rotation and ground dots/cleave does its job and it's enough to take care of aoe. But in general, it doesn't have to be the case.
