Is there a memory leak currently in ESO?

@Bartdude you know you can turn off the screens at the start of the game launch right? No need to waste time clicking.

    Hi,

Yes i have noticed that my .exe is growing to way over 5gig in task manager now. It starts off at around 3.2 - 3.7gb and after an hour or 2 of playing it has grown to 5+GB,

I then need to crtl+alt+delete, task manager and nuke it.... it wont even exit the game...

Absolutely. If you keep your task manager open while playing you can watch it grow pretty steadily.

I've not noticed any significant memory hogging instances of ESO, however it could be that some of the changes introduced in the last patch for content not yet released aren't playing nice with the existing content.

For example the path leading out of Auridon doesn't render completely any more, showing the fuzzy, less-detailed layer that loads in for distance view. Possibly a loading glitch or possibly a slight change in the map has occurred that resulted in it being super imposed over the detailed path textures.

There are some other odd occurrences in trials where, probably due to their render priorities, effects like negates, or boss save zone highlights don't render clearly.

If you do suspect it's a memory leak try to do some investigating. Is it ESO that's holding the memory, or another process?
One strange occurrence I had troubleshooting a memory leak was that my system's Non-Paged Pool would grow to 10-15 GB, shortly there after my system would hard-lock. It only happened while playing ESO, but ESO itself would stay at about 4GB of memory. The culprit was actually a network driver, but it took a lot of Googling to land on the exact problem.

I think it's the PVP server that got the leak . I can run the regular zones for days on max graphics and never crash . In PVP the problem with FPS and ping compile over time till eventually one of those loading screens becomes infinite while traveling .

We recommend that you exit the game and run a repair on the game launcher to ensure that it is completely up to date.

If the problem persists, please let us know and we'll be sure to investigate further. In the meantime, here are some tips that may help reduce and minimize the effects of the memory leak. Start by adjusting the graphics settings. This will reduce the strain on the computer:

•Change the display mode to Windowed (Fullscreen)
    •Turn on Vertical Sync
•Reduce quality settings for SubSampling, Shadow Quality, and Water Reflection Quality

In addition to this, it may be helpful to launch the game directly using eso.exe from the installation directory (located here by default: C:\Program Files (x86)\Zenimax Online\The Elder Scrolls Online\game\client). Alternatively, it could help to alt-tab out to the game launcher once the game has launched.

Similarly, the you may want to try closing out of any programs not being used to avoid overtasking the computer. The simplest way to do this is to run the computer in selective startup, which will limit the number of programs which will start when rebooting the computer.

To put a computer in selective startup mode, follow these steps:
•Click Start and type "msconfig" in the search box
•Right click on the "msconfig.exe" program and choose "Run as administrator"
•On the General Tab at the top, click on the Selective startup button
    •Uncheck "Load startup items"
•Click on the Services tab and check the "Hide all Microsoft services" box
•Click the "Disable all" button at the bottom
    •Click Apply, then click OK.
    •Restart your computer

When the computer boots up again, it will be in selective startup. Try the game again and see if this helps limit the memory leak problem. After playing, selective startup can be turned off. This is done by opening the msconfig window again and selecting the Normal startup button. Click Apply, then click OK, and restart the computer again.

For more detailed instructions on this process, visit the Microsoft support page here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135.

Note: Spending a long time at the character selection screen seems to increase the effects of the memory leak.

    So no memory leak then!

I still get the low-res texture bug when i reload an area I was in recently. It's only been three years though, you have to give them time to get around to it. Personally I hope they get bank a-z alphabetization done first.

One reason for slow texture loading can be the harddrive.

One reason for slow texture loading can be the harddrive.

The hard drive has nothing to do with it. I have a Samsung 960 Pro M.2 which reads a 3500MBs, when testing that number it is even higher and I still see horrible textures unless I look directly as the person or NPC. There are so many things wrong with this game its staggering. Its getting to the point where if they do not start to do incremental fixes and patches its going to get out of hand if its not already there.

Everyone plays differently so people that are saying they have no FPS issues are not PvPing 90% of the time or running trials because its there people, believe me. People who do not notice texture issues are not playing this game on ultra high settings in 1080p or 2k/4k. I am playing in 2K and the game is beautiful but it takes like 3 to 5 seconds for characters or certain items to render completely.

In PvP, after about an hour of play I start to notice stuttering. At that point I do a /reloadui and it fixes it every time. However usually I just Alt-F4 because I am in a loading screen from standing too close to the breech in the wall during repair.

I don't think it is in my case as my hardware is very good. Also the texture bug is perfectly replicated each time you reload a zone.

VMA causes this issue for me as well. It becomes almost unplayable for me and I'm forced to reboot my whole machine to get rid of the stuttering. Many times this has cost me flawless runs and I just wish I could figure out what exactly the issue is.

I have also tweaked the usersettings.ini to get some more FPS but this is not an issue i am now getting while playing. The FPS is not bad all the time, it is almost 100 sometimes when i start the game, then i can stand in the same place for and hour or two and the FPS can be as low as 10. Full restart of the game helps, nothing else.

There is no launcher open, open launcher should not bloat the client anyways but still its not active. I also use the executable to run the game.

The gradual FPS loss looks like a meory leak to me, also the clients memory usage increases over time in proportion to FPS loss.

There is also another issue making sudden FPS drops which is not related to memory leak but actually to the number of players allowed on each instance of the current location. The game seems to allow way too many players on one instance, the FPS could be greatly improved by cutting the size of the instances to half.

Since One Tamriel dropped, it is definitely more crowded, and the PC certainly works harder as a direct result of having to animate more characters. Belkarth is a perfect example. The curious design decision to have everyone turn in their top-tier writs to the exact same location is asking for the inevitable PC fans to fire up as one approaches the city, and calming down not too long after walking out of the area. There was always a small loss in FPS in the capital towns, but never to this extreme, at least for me.

Could someone explain to me the effects of memory leak, and what it would cause on my End for Ps4 NA?

I think I have an Idea on what it is you're all talking about but I want to confirm it.

Is memory leak the degradation of Ingame areas that do not load regardless of how long you wait or reload Ui and the textures and terrain ingame still do not load causing your game to slow to horrendous levels? If so then yes I have experienced this many many times since one Tamriel.

On PS4 Pro NA if that helps

For people with choppiness/stuttering, right click your desk top short cut. go into compatibility, tick the boxes for override high DPI scaling, as well as the box for run as administrator. I don't know what platform you play on, but if you use PC, I've heard the launcher has a memory leak. I always close it as soon as the game launches.

Has caused "fewer" problems it seems but obviously not free of disconnects etc.

Why do you even launch from the launcher? Just create a desktop icon from the .exe file directly, that way you never have to close anything... I only use the launcher on patch day.
