This would be great help and I would actually purchase them. As is, they are of little worth to me, especially at the exorbitant price tag for them.
If they got fixed, it would also take much strain off town overpopulation and lag.

I think this was a false rumor. There were datamined assistants that had a different look, but one of the devs confirmed that the change was merely cosmetic, and the functionality would be identical to the merchant and banker in the Crown Store that we have now.

Pledges.
Stablemasters.
Mages, Fighters, and Undaunted daily quests.
Guild traders.
Writs.
Dueling.
Looking for group.
There are plenty or reasons we would still be going to towns. I don't want to see Homestead turn into WoW's Garrison either. The difference here is that I think ESO has enough features that are only available in towns to keep them from becoming "ghost towns". Another point to be made is that in the future ZOS could implement more reasons on top of the already existing ones to promote traveling to towns for certain things.
But, to not offer Merchant repair, Banker guild bank/stores, Smuggler laundering, while in the home is seriously hurting the games housing feature in a very significant way.
Many people are not even going to get involved in a house because of this one simple issue. Assistants do not offer full services while in you home. This is bad for everyone.
At 5k crowns per pop for assistants, I guarantee ZOS sees a HUGE influx of sales for these services in homes. Literally almost all people who previously did not want to purchase them will change their minds and buy them on the spot the moment they offer full features - Even just for in the home ONLY.
Make the right decision ZOS! You are only hurting everyones housing experience, and especially your own wallet by not doing this!
If they offered guild bank access, merchand repairs and smuggler fence, that would be 3 less reasons to go to town. Dueling, can be set up at anyone with a manor, one more reason. Lfg can be done anywhere. Now even with all that I think they should offer those services. As a matter of fact I think the smugglers 35% should be removed.
Now I don't find these assistants to be worthless, except maybe the smuggler. I like being able to sell off excess junk when farming, I also like being able to deposit into my bank things after running trials and dungeons, without the hassle of going to town. But their functionality could definitely be better.

This is true, but I believe stablemasters, guild traders, quests, pledges etc will still filter people through the towns.

Yes.
Let me finally sort out the guild bank in peace, without the constant duelling and spell spamming around me.
Or the banker moving away from me!
It's not just about convenience, but also about peace and quiet.
Whoever thought duelling should be allowed in banks should be fired.
Towns won't become empty. That's not how the server works. Currently all the hotpots such as Wayrest and RawlKha are instanced due to overcrowding. The megaserver manages these instances as people come and go from cities. This puts strain on server. If towns were to be become slightly quieter it would reduce lag and we wouldn't even notice the change just fewer instances. And realistically it's not gonna have that big an impact on people visiting towns cos at 5500 crowns not everyone can buy them both. Plus there will still be other reasons to come to town. So I think the arguments against increasing assistant function are weak

Oh and btw, with the merchant you can buy repair kits, so its kinda the same thing-ish.
