Can a breton stamplar tank?

If so can an experienced tank give me pointers?

I made a breton stamplar long ago that I want to salvage instead of deleting as he's level 50 and already has medium and heavy armor maxed, along with DW and one hand/shield.
Thing is the only templar shield is a 6 second magic skill and I'm not sure if the heavy armor resistance skill will suffice.
Should I respec? How should I spend my attributes, a mix of all 3 or focus on stamina and health? 5 heavy, 2 medium?
I'm completely clueless here as this is the only role I have yet to try and I want to do it right so I greatly appreciate any guidance.

Yea this is what kills the game, you can't just use any race you like for end game, it's BS imo and the Dev's should do away with the racial skill sets and add them to the class not the race! this way we can play any race we like and be awesome at end game

Figured as much...will switching to magic help or should I just start fresh?

I assume DK makes the best tanks, is it better to focus on magic or stamina for points and skills? I don't know how tanks work but now I want to learn.

it is not the race that kill this for vet rials, it is a stamplar tank that does. you can tank with any race on a dk and be fine.

though if you want to try here are some links-

here a mag version of a templar tank, something to look into to since your race is better suited to that-

Depends on what you want. If you just want to complete dungeons / trials, it's possible with every race/class as long as your group can adjust to it.
However if you want to go for high scores and top leaderboard spots, you will have a hard time with your current choice, but changing your class (to dk) would be more important than changing your race.

Thanks for the tips but I don't wanna struggle as a crap tank to make it work so I guess I'll re-roll into a DK

I've tanked as a stamplar Breton for 3 years. I've completed Veteran Hel Ra, Veteran Aetherian Archives, Veteran Dragonstar Arena, vICP (near release) and vWhite-Gold Tower, to name a few. The others are right: race does hamstring you. But it does not prevent you.

I use stamina for dealing damage and magic for support. It is closer to a hybrid build in practice, but statistically it is "Stamina." Play a stamina templar tank but know your racial passives let you cast a couple more spells than others. It lets you offload the burden of buffs from your stamina pool. You can actually build into a hybrid role with Pelinal's Aptitude and Ravager, but I have not tested that in trials. What I used was Willow's Path, Engine Guardian and a Master's Sword. For other content, Willow's Path and Ravager are my goto sets.

    @Vigarr

Templars can tank anything in the game without question. Templars can tank though your more reliant on other Templars for stamina (shade) since the class doesn't have Sustain built in.

To much to type on my phone about the rest. Farm ebon and bloodspawn to start. Solid 5 PC and monster set respectively.

    Have you considered healing?

Breton templar is perfect . For pvp you can use rattlecsge heavy armour.

    Absolutely.

The most annoying part of tanking on any Templar is pulling in mobs and keeping them in one location. With a Dragonknight it's easy to use talons/chains, but with my Templar I have to rely a lot on Caltrops + Swarm Mother helm.

Yes you can tank fine with a Breton Stamplar. You won't be min/maxed, but that really only matters for pushing leader boards on the hardest content. You will be able to (if you can find a group) complete any content in the game.

The rest of your build may need some work, however.

I'm wondering if combining suggestions and using willows path + ebon is a good idea for regen and extra health to free up points for stamina.
    What's a good stam/magic/health ratio for a tank?
    @SparklyRook
I have a dunmer magplar for heals/dps...in retrospect I should've made them a mag dk but it's too late now.

Stamplar are one of the harder class to play and pretty bad at tanking.

You should be a magplar. 5 heavy 2 light. Sword and board for tanking and destro off bar to keep wall of element up to help dps. Must run Tri food to block.

Learn how to blockcast honor the dead while holding agro and you will be the one carrying groups, not the other way around.

    Cheers!

    Nvm scratch what said.

Hybrid stamplars are META, deff run penials guise it's BIS.

Make sure to rage at the healer and dps everytime you guys wipe. It's their fault not yours anyways.

One of the best tanks on the PC NA server is a templar tank, so I don't see why not. Dragonknight isn't the only class able to tank in the game, and every class has it's pros and cons when you consider them for tanking, DK is the easiest and Sorcerer is the hardest, with Templar and Nightblade being about pretty equal in terms of difficulty. Also race doesn't really matter that much, although you may find some of the breton racial passives to benefit you if you use a lot of magicka abilities.

Tanking is mostly about being able to stay alive, managing resources, positioning targets correctly (to avoid killing your group with cleave attacks / etc.) and being able to hold taunt. If you have never done it before you may find it to be pretty difficult at first, but what you should focus on is keeping everything aggroed on you by using one or both of the two taunts available (Puncture and Inner Fire).

I wouldn't run the templar shield, but rather focus on always keeping up block and finding a way to maintain resources (i.e. not running out of stamina so you cannot block) in a way that suits your playstyle. As a templar you have access to a lot of healing abilities too, so keeping yourself alive shouldn't be too difficult, plus you've got the Rune Focus which gives you a nice boost to resistances and with the correct passives unlocked also boosts your healing done. Furthermore you have access to Repentance which allows you to turn corpses into stamina (which you will find to be very useful when holding taunt on several enemies at once).

Since you've never tried it before I recommend getting Sturdy on all your gear, defending on weapons, and wearing 7 heavy armour pieces. Make sure you also have all the Heavy Armour and 1h & shield passives unlocked. I would also run sword and board on both bars. Lastly you should put points into the Shadow Ward champion point passive to further reduce block cost.

If possible see if you can get an experienced tank to mentor you, since it always helps learning from others who already know what they are doing so you don't need to start from scratch.
