housing decoration suggestion/frustration

I love playing with housing. I really do. I love figuring out what to put where, what look to go for etc. I've even come to terms with truly monumental amount of farming I have to do in order to be able to decorate every house I'd like to decorate. but there is one thing. this one little, and yet crucial thing... that bothers me. so. much. why is it that when I pick up an item to adjust its location, my camera suddenly changes to something uncomfortable? and when I'm holding that piece, I cannot adjust my camera. but if I put it does and adjust it as i want to be standing/looking - the moment I grab that piece? bam, back to uncomfortable incomprehensible angle. why is it that when I pick up an item - instead of having me hold it in place where it originally was and letting me adjust its location from there - I'm off. sometimes by inches, sometimes more, so before I can fiddle with its positioning in a spot i want it to be - I have to move it BACK into that spot.

and herein lays a suggestion. dear zios. could you please change the decorating interface so that our positioning doesn't change between holding and not holding an item? so that if I put myself into the right place - I STAY in that place when I start actualy editing and placing decorations? so that if I am looking up, which is especially important when placing hanging lanterns or chandeliers - I continue to look up once that lantern is in my hands? just please let me character stay where i placed them facing WHERE I placed them, once I pick up the furnishing that I'm trying to arrange? and keep that furnishing that i'm editing exactly where I originaly placed it, until I start moving it around? thank you

This sounds like you have surface drag on. Try turning it off when you are rearranging stuff, otherwise they might just move to the next surface you are pointing at in the moment you pick them up. On PC you can just hit ESC without placing the item, so it will just return to the pace where it was.
When I'm decorating I constantly switch between surface drag and free mode. For fine adjustments its useful to bind a key for toggle walk/run so you can move really slow.

    I hope that helps!

I share in some of the frustrations of the OP. And I wanted to add a couple of my own, while we're on the subject of the furniture placement tool. I'm not saying it's bad though, this system is quite robust compared to other games housing systems and it's awesome. But there is room for improvement.

    Suggestions
    • Free cam mode - I've spent far too long trying to line up banners to hang from high points of my home while standing far below on the ground. Letting the camera fly around while placing furniture would let us see in those hard to reach places instead of building some elaborate scaffolding just to get up high enough to see.
    • Angle Rotation Measurements - I've been driven to the point of INSANITY trying to get trunks and chairs and tables and carpets at a perfect 90 degree angle! Using the cursor mode to fine tune the rotation helps but I swear my eyes play tricks on me and when I think something looks good, I'll come out of placement only to see it needs tweaking again! Ugh.

Honestly these are the only things that bother me the most. I'll add more I guess if I can think of something else. Back to decorating!

its not the surface drag. I do already have walk/run bound which helps with minor movement of stuff (it is a good suggestion though, thanks just doesn't help the issue I'm having), the problem is not even with the item but with my character and more specifically, the camera. she is facing one way when I'm just standing in a house, but the moment I select an item I have placed before - it changes HER direction. where SHE is looking. this is before I even start doing anything with the item, just the act of picking it up, shifts the camera. placing the item back - puts the camera back to where I originally pointed her before picking up the item.

@ DragonKing - love your suggestions! and I agree, the system is pretty awesome already with the amount of freedom it gives us (decoration amount limits non-withstanding), but it could definitely use tweaking

P.S. dear Zos. could we please please PLEASE do away with invisible ceilings and walls inside the houses? I am not talking about the "how high can you go into the sky" ceiling. but rather "well, there goes my plan for a second floor, because despite ceilings being visually high and me being able to place items anywhere inside the place - my character, cannot go there. for some reason :/

Ah ok i see what you mean. Every item has a fix point, which is used for all rotations and that's where the camera will aim as soon as you pick up the item. I agree with you that some items have weird fix points that are tricky to handle. When I ran into issues like that i tried different locations to pick the item up, until I had a good view on the area where i wanted to place it.

It took a bit of time to get some intuition for it but now I have everything placed where I want it to be!

    Yes ! That ! Please ! ^^

    And a grouping tool !

(and much more slots, to make the places looking really like someone is living there, leaving many items here and there, and creating nice outdoors too)
