When to use poison on weapons?

It seems the poisons aren't really any stronger than most damage enchants, and from what I understand, they take the place of the enchant , so what situations are poison good for?

A very quick response - did not read too far.

in the opening post you are comparing poisons to torug pact infused enchants it seems.

that is why i mentioned above the using sharpened on the poison weapons.

it seems obvious and up from that if you take a 5pc set focused on boosting enchants and a trait that boosts enchants (both in reduced cycle time and yield) and compare to straight up poisons then that tunnel vision comparison will show enchants on top - poisons lacking.

But now lets add in for the poison user not torugs pact but say 5pc julianos and not infused but sharpened. my bet is at that point the overall gains are on the side of the poison user.

Now for sure there is more to that thread than that which i skmmed quickly but IMX a well chosen poison or couple of poisons can make your build better - though of course there will be exceptions. Running any set which does OMG stuff off of say fire dmg or shock dmg heavily shifts a build towards using that elemental enchant - for instance.

The basic issue with torugs pact is that while i LIKE THAT SET it does not overall outperform the more straightforward damage dealing sets. Torugs is a "jack of all trades master of huh" set with its health bonus, resistance bonus and damage bonus leading into a beef-up-enchants 5pc bonus. if you just look at enchants you miss the bigger picture.

i can use poisons with almost any set, any weapon without giving up sharpened or powered or precise... and the poison does its job.

I personally am a heavy poison user on my characters - and i think they do not need any boost in effectiveness. the only thing i might suggest is to replace snakeblood passive (the reduce negative effect runtime) with one that boosts poison durations or reduces cooldown - a counterpart to the alchemy potion runtime boost but with much much smaller increases. if it reduced cooldown by 1s per skill spent that would be great.

So you are saying the damage poison is worthless but there is a use for one of the debuff poisons?

The only use for poison in PVE Ive found is that it sells for gold at the vendor. I must have made tens of thousands now from the constant poison drops. Every trip to the vendor I'm selling a big batch of it.

I don't see why poison would be any better than weapon enchants like fire or shock.

In PvP, people who use bow... 100% will use poison arrow.

i think you want to look and see if any poison suits your needs better than the enchants.

For soloing, i find the poison made from butterfly wing, mountain flowers and spider eggs to vbe very useful. it gives drain health and gradual drain health which combine to give a lot of damage and a lot of healing back over their 10s runtime-cooldown. Most of it is in the first 3secs, the rest in the next 3 secs and then only a short 4sec before the next one can start. i can use sharpened staff not infused and get more dmg+heal than i would get from a simple life drain enchant with its 4s cooldown.

of course, a similar tact using maim and a heal might serve better if you dont have a reliable maim.

But pretty much whatever your need is you can find a poison to match.

more to the point, its not so much an either or as you might think.

For group content playing in a group, where i dont need to self-heal as much, i can just drop the poison into my inventory and use the same staff with its weapon power enchant for more damage and no heal or swiotch to ravage health+gradual-ravage health poison.

if i decide to run with my resto staff tonight cuz the group needs more healing - i can simply move the poisons over there.

if i get a new set come tomorrow, the poison moves over - unlike the enchants.

poisons to me are as much about flexibility as they are about effectiveness.

and frankly, their ingredients are a lot more cheaply and reliably available than say kuta even with the locked on glyphs.

Thanks for the detail stevil, 2 more questions ... when you say you use the "ravage health + gradual ravage health poison, is that 2 poisons or some combo crafted poison I haven seen yet?(noob) and when you say drain life , is that like the enchant where it restores your health also, or just a dot on the enemy?

Mountain flower, spider egg and buttefly wings on a poison - these take the normal restore health and gradual restore health and turn them into a quick drain and a slow drain - both doing poison damage and healing you. these use the white cross restore health and the white hourglass gradual restore health

if you take the exact opposites - black cross and black hourglass - they just do damage no heal on you but they do more damage. Nightshade + Fleshflies + Stinkhorn is one combo for this IIRC - offline so not able to verify.

Like i said above, i prefer "Mountain Spider Wings" for most cases where i need ongoing healing effect - like soloing group content and the like. i prefer "Stinky Night Flesh" for cases where i can just focus more on raw damage and leave more of the healing to others.

NOTE that these are poison damage so obviously stamina chars who have CP most likely sunk into the physical damage boosts can gain even more. But i use them for magica as well.

i actually have never tested whether thaumaturge helps the damage from ongoing poisons as DoT but my bet is it does. The various Cp trees that affect healing received and healing done do apply to that part of it from what i recall.

Life drain is the enchantment where you can do magica dmg and get back health every 4s cooldown.

YMMV but there is a good deal of flexibility for poisons in PVE, not to mention the PVP aspects vs costs and healing reductions.

Posions in pvp are good.
..except there seems to be a rule that only the opposing faction is allowed to use them, if they wither with some your a fatherless son of woman with loose morals. Still prefer disease and the actual poison glyph myself.
