@ericsparrow that is an explanation that I can (begrudgingly) accept. A technical explanation that is in no way related to lore, since it is blatantly obvious that black hair is lore-friendly for Altmer.

And I do not think it is impossible that ZOS took the worst possible route at the start of the game and ended up making it impossible to change character hair color outside of the character creator. The game, at release, was severely limited. ZOS became so much better at literally everything in this game since release it is absolutely fantastic. Perhaps if back then they had the team and experience they have today, they wouldn't have burned bridges like this. I still hope they didn't mess up this badly back then, and that they will eventually come up with a solution. I trust @ZOS_RichLambert .

By the way I spoke of the colorful hair styles in the store to disprove the argument that hair dyes aren't a thing in Tamriel yet, not to say that it is possible to have hair dyes on a technical level.

Just so that everyone knows, my Altmer still can't have black hair. About a dozen of Altmer NPCs in the game have black hair. Just saying.

    Meet my characters:
    Command: Do the thing.

Zadarri, Khajiit Fist of Thalmor: The thing was done, as commanded.
Durza gra-Maghul, Orc blacksmith: The thing was done perfectly, in the most efficient way.
Tegwen, Bosmer troublemaker: You can't prove I didn't do the thing.
Sings-Many-Songs, Argonian fisher: Sure, I'll do the thing... Eventually. Maybe.
Aerindel, Altmer stormcaller: After extensive research, I've come to the conclusion that doing the thing would be a waste of resources.
Liliel, Dunmer pyromancer: Aerindel said I shouldn't do the thing. Something about "resources".
Gyda Snowcaller, Nord cryomancer: I will find a way to do it that won't waste resources and make Aerindel proud of me.
Beatrice Leoriane, Breton vampire: I persuaded someone else into doing the thing. You are welcome, dear.
Sahima, Redguard performer: Doing the thing sounds awfully unpleasant and really not my problem.
Ellaria Valerius, Imperial priestess: I'll pray to the Eight for the thing to be done, if it is Their will.

    @ Abeille

tbh I'm sitting here wracking my brains trying to think of why, cos selling colours for hair and skin is such a no brainer its like standing in front of and open goal at the world cup final against brazil at 2:2 in the 92nd minute and not putting the ball over the line.

There must be some deep level reason to do with the architecture of the systems they have created that is preventing them from doing it. But for the life of me I cant think why that would be, what makes skin and hair fundamentally different to a piece of clothing?

    no idea. :)

tbh regarding any lore arguments.. you can justify most things, especially in a world with magic.

It took until the 'hair pack' release for me to give my male Bosmer the Short Imperial hairstyle, even though other Bosmer NPCs have it in the game... but character creator didn't offer it. Some of the decisions that ZOS makes is just beyond me.

And that hair style is still limited to males only, isn't it? Even though Zeira of the Thieves Guild, who is female, has it :/

I'm glad they added the face markings pack too. It made it possible for Orcs to have the Y-Y-V face markings that the Morkul Clan has, which is available in the Character Creator for Bosmer but not for Orcs.
