OMG so freaky stupid. Talk about watching the games player base shrink to nothing but players like the op killing each other all day. Thank god not all dev's listen to stupid crap like this.

Must be your first MMO. A combination of these things have existed in very fun and successful MMOs throughout the years.

The risk is sometimes what makes it more fun.

@CavalryPK I've got just the game for you: EVE Online.

On a more relevant note - maybe another zone that was hardcore with some of the features you listed - then people can go there if they want.

I need magic and swords. I don't do space ships and lasers :)

No. I could only imagine the amount of people leaving ESO because some NB was stealthed at the quest objective killing them every time they went back to complete the quest. If you want questing and PVP quest in Cyrodiil. If they ever open all of the world to PVP I'll quit the game.

Ahh those WOW days. miss them soo much!

This wouldn't be an issue if the game supported multiple rule-set servers as there could simply be a PvP server as well as a PvE server, but the megaserver concept doesn't permit it.

Of course, any such PvP server would be closed down after a few months due to lack of population. People are always keen to lobby for open world PvP until it happens, then they get so fed up with being ganked every time they hand in a quest, finish a mob fight on low health, or arrive through a wayshrine that they want to move off that server and QQ rage because transfers back to a PvE server aren't allowed  !

Meanwhile, add open world PvP to the whole of ESO and you can wave farewell to at least 95% of the playerbase overnight. Even those players who are keen on PvP mostly don't want it forced on them all the time. There are other games much more suited to getting your jollies in that way.

This thread has nothing much to do with ESO. But, if we're talking about how MMO's SHOULD be, then of course there should be a dedicated PvP region, and a dedicated PvE region, with the bulk of the content being in a mixed PvP/PvE region.

In terms of ESO, it made little sense before (Cadwell's "magic"?) that a player from one faction could quest in another faction's zones. With One Tamriel, you don't even need Cadwell for this to happen.

If you are questing in the zone of another faction, and you attack that faction, then players from that faction should be able to intervene.

People who play MMO's with the desire to NEVER be attacked by a player of an opposing faction are not well-formed human beings.

I wish there was PVP in all the zones... such that:
    1. when you quest away from your home city, you are paranoid that any moment could be your last
    2. you need to put everything in the bank because if you are killed all your items could be looted
    3. when you get a quest that is far away you actually need to consider if it is worth the risk to do it alone or wait for a buddy
    4. That death is very punishing and you are scared out of your mind if you are outnumbered
    5. who ever kills you will have equally scary repercussions with the justice system
    6. a thief can sneak into your house and steal your crap. because you stored some things in your house
    7. City like Davon's Watch can be raided by the opposing faction if every one can collaborate together, and if the king(who ever is the boss) is killed rewards will be awesome
    8. you can get real time contracts to hunt down player criminal scum
    9. all the gear is simple, and provides nothing but damage mitigation with out any 2 3 4 5 x bonuses.
    10. and much more

I know this will never happen, but man.... I would love the game 100 times more. until I am ganked over and over and rage quit, and come back because I like torturing myself.

Go play the division then....Nothing wrong with that game either, just saying that sounds like what you want. I've played it, and it is fun... but its not what an elder scrolls game is or was...

A majority of this games player base came from previous elder scrolls titles. MMO or not, most people play this for the single player portion or the PVE group portion.

I wouldn't even have bought this game if it didn't say "elder scrolls" in the title.... well, likely wouldn't have anyway.

EDIT: i should add... i would support the WOW type system where you could toggle pvp on/off. IF you didn't want to pvp, then don't attack other factions.

    Because Cyrodiil is too small?

Because there's nobody there to gank?

Or because there aren't enough noobs and everyone in Cyrodiil gives you a kicking?

As the game stands, if people want PvP they go to Cyrodiil. If they don't they stay away. Why bring PvP to people who don't want it?

Cos if they did want it they'd go to Cyrodiil, wouldn't they:)

They also need to add publicly available killboard stats - with number of kills and number of deaths in PvP :)

Just for the tears and stuff. :pensive:

    Joking though... Really joking...

But such reactions from ESO community are really giving me kicks at the moment.

I would be fine with a toggle, like PvE servers in WoW. You turn it on when you want, and receive a 5 minute debuff keeping you flagged, to avoid any unfair play.

I don't think all zones should have PvP forced on you at all times. That completely changes the game. I stopped playing BDO because of bored, overgeared players sitting in 45+ zones farming people 10-12 levels below them with their awakened specs. PvP in all zones would chase away a lot of players.

I always thought the "spillover" zones would be interesting if they were made open world PvP (the Rift. Malabal Tor and the other one). No PvP rewards or xp awarded but more a place to try out PvP-centric things (the proposed old PvP justice system etc). Also put a timer on PvP kills to prevent some 15 yr old spunktrumpet from getting PvP gank jollies.

The AD zone you mean is Reaper's March. Malabal doesn't touch Cyrodiil, and actually none of the DC ones do, only Craglorn and that's like a neutral area in terms of the Alliance war, though I guess you could argue it's under DC control.

Cryodiil, IC, well it depends on the campaign.

What game are you playing? You can pve (albeit not exclusively) in both Cyrodiil and IC.

It really should make no difference when you are attacked, whether your attacker is controlled by a person or a computer. Some people have an irrational psychological aversion to being attacked by other people.

If you are a member of the Ebonheart Pact, and you are standing with a group of EP NPC soldiers, and an Aldmeri Dominion player attacks the group as part of his mission, there is absolutely NO theory under which it makes sense that the EP player cannot intervene.

ESO does not allow this because they want to cater to the widest possible playerbase, and this includes those who cannot handle being attacked by other players. It's a monetary decision, and I understand it, but let's not defend this as good game design!

If you want open-world PvP, CU is your game. Unfortunately, it's not coming out this year.

As much as I'd like open world PvP in ESO, I know that with this player base and combat balance (power creep) I would be clubbing baby seals and actually driving players away from the game, which is something you very much want to avoid as a responsible PvPer.

I've been keeping an eye on CU but haven't seen much progress on it really.

Star Citizen as well but 2.6.1 is meh. (Still an awesome alpha though)

My favorite times of SWTOR was open world PvP. I could always go either way but seeing people instantly cry fowl is hilarious.

Obviously it would be player choice you know, like PvE server or PvP server. Unfortunately we're stuck with their poor megashard stuff.

    um.... nope.

The two things you're trying to combine just don't go together... other games have attempted this and didn't do well.
It would like dipping a candy bar in soy sauce. Nothing against either of them specifically... but together it doesn't sound great.

pve and pvp are completely different worlds. It has nothing to do with some "irrational psychological aversion" or even just a monetary decision. It's a game design. Elder Scrolls has always been a single player story game.

BTW, This is an especially bad idea you lost your items... If i got ganked and someone stole my vma weapons that i spent hours and hours to find... yeah, not a chance i would play that game. Also, what's to stop some people from camping main story NPCs and killing every single player that walks up? How does this sound like a good idea? Essentially it could prevent anyone else from gaining levels and progressing through the game.

    Agreed.

As I listed in my sig, UO was one of the first MMORPG's, and was one I was playing since Day 1 when it launched. The Open World PvP really kept me from enjoying the game, and damn near caused me to write off the whole game.

Then they opened the PvE only server, and I was one of that +/-95% that immediately moved to the PvE server and never looked back. And throughout the ENTIRE life of Ultima Online, the population of the Open-World PvP server never even came close to touching the population of the PvE server.

Open World PvP across all Zones would kill ESO overnight. The population would plummet to a mere fraction of what it is now, and ZOS's revenue stream would snap shut faster than a Nun's legs.

Even if they took a healthy section of Morrowind (especially a piece of real estate as large as the Ashlands...) and flagged it as Open World PvP, you'd see people cancelling their pre-orders faster than anyone thought possible.

As other people have mentioned; if you want tough, open-world PvP in your MMO, there's plenty of MMO's that cater to that already. But it would be toxic in ESO, and would actually (in all likelihood) kill this game. I know a lot of people fear-monger and say that "*blah* event/occurrence will kill ESO", but it's very highly likely that open-world PvP outside of Cyrodiil (which is also the largest Zone in the game) would actually be the death knell of ESO.

The vast majority of MMO Gamers are just that much against it, and rightly so.
