Something disturbing in chat last night

I don't normally pay much attention to chat, but I was glancing at it while I was passing the time waiting for a Dolmen to start up. I don't have the full name of the person who made these comments and if I did, I'm still not sure how I would report it. This person was telling someone that they should commit suicide and that they would like to see the person's mother have to watch as her child was put into the ground.

As a mother and as a widow, this disturbed me on so many levels. I wasn't going to say anything about it at all, but I couldn't get it off of my mind. I thought that sharing it might ease my mind some. I'm not trolling and I'm not trying to start trouble. I know better than to think that everyone is always going to get along, but everybody deserves more respect than that. I appreciate the opportunity to be able to unload.

When I was growing up my parent's taught me this valuable lesson:
"Stick and stones may break your bones, but words will never hurt you"

Apparently a nursery rhyme no longer taught in this day and age.

There is a way to report under the "Help" menu in game, if you see something like this again. If you are playing on a console, as well, there is an option to view the person's profile and report them to Sony or Microsoft from there. Cyber bullying is a thing, and is usually jumped on by the console makers. Zenimax on the other hand is not so good with these things.
Why be normal when you can be better?

Telling someone to kill them self is FAR from telling someone their face looks funny. Apparently manners and understanding other people was never taught to you.

At the time of this nursery rhyme, children and young adults had distinctly different social circles and limited type of anonymity. I just wish parents where smart enough to use keyloggers on their childrens computer to moniter it.

Please report them. Screenshot the chat / comments if you can. And report it to zos. Players have been banned for stuff like this. So please don't assume that nothing is going to be done. At the least, zos would likely give them a warning. And sometimes a warning is helpful in curbing behavior. If not, then there is a record of the incident. So if the player is reported again for similar behavior, then it leads a a second warning and a greater chance of being banned.

Very sorry for your loss and sorry that this caused you pain.

Yes, that one died out about the time that people realised that it was demonstrably untrue.

To the OP. Please report the people doing this whenever it occurs. It may not cause ZOS to take significant action but it does, at least, make them aware of the problem.

people are cruel but oh well so is life.

Funnily it's always been my experience that people who make that particular "observation" about life always seem to see it as an excuse to add to the cruelty, but never as a compelling reason why we should try to act like a decent human beings whenever we can. Even in chat.

Are you saying I'm a cruel person bc I said life is cruel? That's a bold thing to say when you know nothing about me.

@CMFan1966 I think only a parent will understand. My first thought would be that someone could have said that to one of my children.

Next time please take a screenshot and submit the report. Trash like that should not be allowed near a PC.

But words can and do hurt, something proven time and again by modern psychology, or simple layman's analysis of the real world. To suggest otherwise is to ignore some of the reasons behind mass shootings that happen all to often.

It's the internet. In the real world, people restrain themselves because they might get slapped across the face or worse. Put the safety of the web in the way and people will say anything. No repercussions lead people to show their true selves.

What a wonderfully simplistic view. It assumes that every reponse is voluntary (they aren't... otherwise psychology and psychiatry wouldn't exist) and it precludes the possibility that words can induce others to act against you (they may... otherwise rhetoric wouldn't either).

There is weird stuff going on every night in the chat. I believe, that those, mentioned by OP are just frustrated, spoiled 10yo keyboard warriors with underdeveloped mind and behavior, who are playing long over their bedtime. I can´t imagine, that something like this can be said by grown man with healthy mind.

The internet and real life mostly work exactly the same with added anonimity.

People come together into communities or cliques, being social animals. Being rejected and pushed out, cursed out of communities hurts just as much online than it does everywhere else.

Since we want more people to enjoy, what we enjoy, we need to be a welcoming community that is helpful and fair.

People that go around telling people to kill themselves or rip people off deliberately they are the people that need to be pushed out for the betterment of the rest of us and allow us to continue to grow the game. Yep I know I just said it hurts when that happens, but these people are hurting others whille they stay.

I get that some of you are hyper compedative and need to min-max everything including your own time. When dealing with people who are not like you, take a breath before you curse them out, just say "I am sorry but we are looking for someone more compedative".. then kick them from your group without another word.

In so sorry you had to read or hear such foul behavior. Decency should translate over to the web though most the time it does not. On a positive note. Your house has its own zone chat and you can get away from such cruelty whenever you choose now :)

    Definitely reportable, definitely actionable.

Pontification about the social nuances of such behavior is irrelevant. All that matters is that it is a gross violation of the ESO Code of Conduct which can (and should) result in account termination.

    @Mavloc obvious troll is obvious.

There was a case in USA about a psychotic girl who told her boyfriend to do this & he did, she was directly responsible for it.

"Set a guard over your mouth" simplified : "watch what you say to others" / "If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all"

I recommend you take the latter approach in the future and rather support the OP in condemning this than actually reacting the way you did.

OP I am terribly sorry for this & I hope you whispered the person they said it to to tell them to just ignore the person

Do not fret I honestly believe the most people in this world are decent, they're just invisible because garbage tends to smell and then we notice it more easily

Words do hurt which is why that outdated nursery rhyme isn't taught anymore. You know only yesterday I saw a story about a 13 year old girl who killed herself because of relentless cyber bullying and the last message she received before committing suicide was "why don't you just go and hang yourself" to which she replied "ok"

As for the ridiculous you only give them control when you allow words to hurt you. It's NEVER okay to tell someone to kill themselves, so for you to in a way make that okay because the target of the foul abuse shouldn't allow it to hurt them because it's only words is absolutely ridiculous.

It's got nothing to do with promoting the right of free speech. It's just downright pathetic that in this day and age its okay to be cruel and think that it's okay to do so from behind the safety of a firewall. Instead of saying "just ignore it", or "block the player", how about teaching some manners instead.

To pull a quote from a film:

"You know what the difference is between physical torture, and psychological torture? With physical torture, sooner or later, you just can't take it anymore and you die. But, psychological torture? That can go on forever."

Can't remember if it's Chinatown or The Two Jakes, though. I'm also probably butchering the exact phrasing. Still... it's a thing.
