Why is there an icon of a house?

And can I shrink it or disable it? Note I have not purchased any home yet so do not know why it appears. Is it suppose to be on sale?

Lake✭✭✭✭✭I don't think you can shrink or disable it. Addon authors said that it was tied in with the wayshrine filter, so if you hid the houses with an addon, the wayshrine icons would be gone too.1 -
Jemcrystal✭✭✭✭✭I only have the one house on my map not any others. If it were "for homes that are available" would it not show for all of the houses?0

Once you do the housing quest you get an item that will open up all houses on the map. You have not done that yet but I am guessing you either previewed that house or perhaps "discovered" it by approaching it on the map much like you would discover a new wayshrine.
If you do the housing quest, think twice about using the item you get which opens up all the icons because then your map is covered with those house icons. :-)2 -

Just what I needed, more clutter on the damn map.
I'm boycotting buying any more houses until there is a way to turn them off. The black icons are bad enough. Once they are all white...ugh.

Jemcrystal✭✭✭✭✭I am afraid to enter my guildmates homes or the guild leaders "guildhall". I actually think maybe the house that appears on my map now was a guildhall invite to me. I don't remember how I clicked it and got in.

If you travel to a house that is yours or as a visitor the icon will be there. But anytime you click on the icon it will send you to preview the house of you do not own it.
The only way to visit someone else's house is via travel to player or choosing to visit their primary residence from guild roster or friends list.0 -

That's it then. I guild port all the time. I really hope zos fixes this I want to feel safe to port to anyone's abode.0 -
From ZOS:
You can toggle the map filter to make wayshrines (and houses) disappear by following the steps here. It's not possible to just toggle off houses using the game UI.
