I am torn .. I want to experience the Dark Brotherhood content

But they are assasins and basically evil. Doesn't go well with the hero type character I am trying to play.

I'm not an RPer to any extent but I know what you mean about this DLC and also Thieve's Guild .. the game needs a new faction that isn't 'evil' to provide content for those who aren't sociopaths.

Blackwater kills people as well but they're just a company , not necessarily evil.

You could try to look at it as though you're just a contractor being brought in to remove baddies from the world

I felt this way about Skyrim as well. I don't play straight heroic but I maintain some moral rules.
But the completionist in me said "***, how dare you leave something incomplete in my journal" and I had to just go along with it and write it into the character in a convincing way.

For ESO it's the same more or less. It's more important for me not to miss out on experiencing a neat city and the opportunity to meet new people.

But hey, this may also look like the time for a new character

Well... no, because there are only eight divines. Talos won't ascend for another 400 years or so.

I get what you mean, OP. My Nord of like 700 hours was RP'd as the valiant type, always choosing the "good guy" answers and sparing people instead of killing them. It just felt weird to be then stabbing innocent people in the face or slitting their throats for the DB. I did it though, for completion sake.

What would have been amazing is if ZOS gave you the choice to not join the DB and instead help infiltrate their ranks and eliminate them.

Without spoiling DB's main story, you can turn it around and say you're fighting against a corrupt organisation who seek to control the population with fearmongering and platitudes while siphoning their gold.

I agree Remag_Div they should add mutlibranching questlines to it. An alternate way through it as an infiltrator there to damage the Dark Brotherhood. That would be awesome.

Weeell..
if you're going to go all RP on it, why cannot you be a knight in shining armor that is sent to inflintrate the black brotherhood?
You might have to do some unsavory things your character doesn't agree with, but considers it the lesser evil, one which he (or she) will atone for for the rest of their lives.

It's that or simply make a "bad" character, with the scaling you can enjoy the black brotherhood and the thieves guild with a lowbie character. Maybe an evil twin or something?

Or or! The black brotherhood's missions are a string of nightmares haunting your characters, of a past life he (or she) might have had at one time. This way you'll get the skillpoints from the black brotherhood and keep your character pure!

I'm an avid RPer but if I want to experience a certain piece of content I just handwave it as occurring mostly or entirely out-of-character. If your character arc is a story you make up in your head anyway, then you really do have full control over what's canon for your story, what's not, what's an AU type of situation, etc.

I never thought of that. I like the nightmare scenario. Like this stuff never really happened.

I have one evil character, who stalks the world killing people. Most times, it is by contract. While he did not start out this way, he has sort of become an Angry At The World type.

I have another character that sort of got caught up with a bad crowd, Dark Brotherhood groupies, killed an innocent, and decided that was enough. But, they get to keep the Blade of Woe, which comes in handy, at times.

Thieves Guild is made up of lovable clowns. Yes, even Velsa. Partake at your earliest convenience.

In Dark Brotherhood, you almost always kill people who need it. Not always. Up to you. It's a good storyline, though.

I mean when you actually look at the storylines, the main antagonists in TG and DB are way more crooked than the actual guilds. Sure you commit crimes, but sometimes crime is what brings justice. Look at half of the superheroes, they were all considered criminals/outlaws at first.

In TG, you can view theft as a way to take from the rich and give to the poor.

In DB, you can view murder as a way to "cleanse" the corruption of certain individuals.

Yeah, it can be pretty psycho depending how you interpret it, but it fits to the whole hero thing you're going for.

The homestead patch has put even more pressure on me now to get the Blade of Woe. So many pesky NPC with valuable blueprints in their pockets or in the way of me looting their drawers and chests.
I just cant picture seeing my heroic Templar using the Blade of Woe especially with those brutal animations. But its been very tempting. For now, I created another character that will do the Dark Brotherhood content.

Agreed. Great suggestions, too.

I have a coworker friend irl who loves RPGs, but because of his beliefs has trouble with storylines/quests that involve dark themes (Tried to get him into Witcher 3 and Dragon Age, but he refuses). Optional routes or alternative takes would be nice to add (even Skyrim had a way to "opt out" of the DB storyline). But I can't imagine how hard it would be to code in so many permutations without bogging down the system.

Of your choosing, however. So, there are some more deserving targets available.

yeah I don't think there is anyway a heroic character could justify killing an innocent person. they just couldn't do it in the first place.

That dude raking his garden behind his house looks like such a hard worker. You can tell he's been out there all day in the hot sun trying to provide food for his family. He's sweating, his shoulders are slouched, and he's beat down from the expression on his face. I mean, who can blame him? Molag Bal are dropping Dark Anchors all over Tamriel and just yesterday he saw his entire town murdered 20 times over. But he still wakes up every morning and tends to his garden, all alone behind his house... with no guard in sight...

If I'm honest, KotN was always a really weird DLC to me. It's solid, mechanically, and has one of the best gear sets in Oblivion for low level players (because the gear will level to you as you advance, constantly repair, and recharge the enchantment). But, the actual story was a few shades off Monty Python.

They respawn, they are not real, kill and move on.

This is an example of where ZOS got the TES series spot on. I skipped some Daedric Prince quests in the single-player games that I didn't like. You always have that choice on side quests. The hero of TES can be a shining hero or an anti-hero, s/he just has to save Tamriel.
