Overcrowded

In Mournhold, i can run about 50 to 70 fps during the normal week days, Monday, tuesday, wednesday and Thursday.

    friday its 3 to 40

Saturday its sometimes as bad as 10, im lucky if it hits 30.

Sunday its getting better again, running 30 to 50.

I have been looking at this ffor few weeks noww, and pattern is clear. Too many players allowed in one instance.

The same trend happens outside Mournhold as well, at weeks, 50 to even as good as 90, then weekends 20 to 50.

Few times, i have witnessed a sudden drop in DPS in Stross M'kai. I am standing in the front of the inn, chatting with guildies. About 10 minutes pass and i dont move or do anything. FPS runs on 40 to 60 at Friday. Then suddenly the FPS drops to 20-30 without me doing anything. Only difference i can see, is suddenly there are players everywhere when it was peaceful and quiet before, duels and all sorts of activity.

This leds me to believe, that either my instance, or some other players instances were running on too few players and they wrere merged to get better population on one instance. The switch on a player can happen without player noticing it, for example it can happen when you run out of inn (Open door/Exit a building).

I think we could get way better performance AND more enjoyable play by making instances significantly smaller.

I actually like that there are other people around... better than the wasteland some zones used to be before 1T... though I wish they would not allow dueling in city limits...

    Why?

Do you feel intimidated by people that can PvP?
    Seeing others duel intimidate you?
Does people challenging you to a duel intimidate you?

There's this place I know of, Planet Fitness. No intimidating is allowed!

ZOS has control over zone layering, so in some of the busier zones there's potentially more than one layer of players. I guess, as far as the devs are concerned, they are happy with how full the zones are allowed to get.

I thought the OP was trolling but I think I understand the point being made. Most MMO's handle this by occasional balancing to add/remove servers but with the mega servers in ESO I'm not sure how that would work. My own experience in game has not been the same as the OP though. Very few players outside of big cities and I have little competition to grab mats.

My post was not meant to complain! Ofcourse I am happy Eso is populair and crowded!
I just wanted to share my observations here and was wondering if something could be done with the problems an overcrowded game has.

I think it's great there's lots of people playing, if that's in fact what it means.

I also think they need to cut the current player/instance limits by at least 50%.

It's a megaserver, the players will still be there, just not all at the same dolmen.

It's ridiculous to run this server infrastructure at these levels, and I think it's probably starting to hurt profits, and that's on console, I imagine it's worse on PC with homestead.

We have more reason to gather matts and as such there will be more competition. It is healthy for the game seeing so many active even if it is related to content that is not actually meaningful. Not saying housing is not good, but it is not actual content.

Those of us that started at the release of the game are very aware of the competition for harvesting nodes, especially end game nodes. It is just part of gaming and good for keeping a balance for obtaining matts.

One aspect that is part of the good design is when a zone is crowded a new instance is created but the nodes are shared between the instances to further node harvesting in check. This is part of the original design of the game.

Personally I prefer the crowed the the wasteland zones that we had before.

The fact people actually farm dolems and world bosses now is nice.

erm... its an online game you should expect to see other players.....
if there are a lot of them perhaps it is because the game is thriving.

... or because they merged the faction servers with One Tamriel. Or both.

Seeing other players isn't the same as being in a crowd all the time !

I actually wish instances were much larger. I don't run into enough players in the game which can sometimes get boring. It also makes it harder to find people for group/world bosses.

How does it cntribute to a good game if a certain area is full of people?

There are several instances of one area, every one of them is in the same chat, you need to be in the zone chat to actually talk to people but many have turned the zone off. What kind of experience it? If you are not in the chat room with these people, they might as well be bots/NPC's with randomized behaviour.

Players jumping all around like crazy because they are bored does not contribute to my gameplay, it makes the world feel ridiculous. Players spamming abilities does not contribute to my gameplay at any way, they only make my gameplay worse by making FPS bad. People dueling do make the game more lively but in other hand it also happens in places where it should be prohibited and gurads should intervene. They also make FPS worse by using flashy abilities.

People who play immersively do contribute to game feeling alive but people who just run through everything with sprint glued down do not.

Tamriel is not a modern city, it is not expected to have a big population of people outside cities. Cities feel good being big and populated, nut again, because the game engine cant hold it steady, the FPS drops again and big cities are just bad to play.

Regardless of my personal opinion abut population size and whatnot. This engine (Hero engine) is notorious of being bad in handling large groups and largely player populated areas, therefore to fix multiple issues, the number of people allowed to be on one instance, needs to be reduced greatly.

I agree with every part of the above post.
This game turns more and more away from its origin (the Morrowind series) and becomes
a haven for bored teenagers who behave (actually worse) as they do a School.
As someone commented " Many people playing is good BUT the bored Zerg crowd is cancer' and kills this game slowly.
The first step in combating this trend is to limit the number of Zerg players in certain areas of the game by creating new instances quicker.

    Suggestions:

Riding in cities slowed to walking speed or banned completely (would help with the frame-rate).

Mounts around Merchants banned (would really help with access to Merchants and other NPC Vendors).

Dolmen difficulty actually adjusted to the number of players in the immediate vicinity of The Dolmen.

Duels not allowed in areas that are frequented by many players. Sorry to say; Having a duel next to an active Dolmen is really
not a good idea and neither is having a duel in a crowded city zone right in front of the Bank or Smithy.

Dungeon instances in my opinion should be limited to 5 players. I am really peed off by having a Zerg Troll horde of ten (or more players) rampaging through the Dungeon area and camping the dungeon Boss.

So yes; many players is good for the game. But Zerg show-offs (especially the none paying sort) are not good, for it drives away those who actually subscribe to the game (because they do care).

    @Tapio75

    1. Having a population in an MMO is good. Everyone in the zone is able to chat, via test zone chat. Unsure what you are getting at here but it is certainly not clear. Oh, ignore the players moving around just for the sake of moving around, If this type of behavior is not acceptable to you then an MMO may not be the fight choice (not trying to be funny).
    2. Even in ancient cities, ones that were thriving had large populations. Cities based on trade had to have large populations.
    3. ESO does not use HERO engine. It was merely used as a prototype in early development and could not even come close to handling the world that is ESO Tamriel. The engine as not used in later development and does not power the game.
