Don't get me wrong, Templar has some great group support skills too, but since templars are the best healers, you get most of the group support that their class can provide from a healer. As we all know, dragon knight healers are more of a rare breed, and the DPS dragonknights aren't usually throwing down talons for CC.
dk tanking is super easy mode. you can permablock effortlessly with helping hands and battle roar, the ultimates are pretty cool but tbh i use warhorn which the templar has, you have to run a range taunt and the undaunted set swarm mother that pulls the attack to you when you block an attack = chains, pop the sword and board ultimate and heavy attack in the time its on and boom theres your battle roar, its nice for fast runs of pledges coz you can tank and heal, but those are doable with 4 dps too lol
Blazing shield templar tanking in PvE is really underrated, one word... equilibrium. Support, dps and a solid punching bag... takes a while to master but i wouldn't change it for the world
Templar tanks only truly excel in PvP. Maybe once ZOS gets all the kinks worked out with Ice Staff tanking*, maybe Templar Tanks will be better off
ATM, DK are the best tanks and probably remain the best for some time to come
Believing ZOS will make Ice Staff tanking viable with what we've been given is outright laughable. ZOS couldn't make a balanced breakfast, let alone make Ice Staff tanking viable in a competitive PvE sense. This idea is doomed as it currently is and unless ZOS makes a drastic 180, it will just be a failed idea with no purpose. Shame that they had to murder Ice Staves in the process though.

DKs are better because as a templar tank you really struggle to deal with large mobs and adds they have 0 CC to keep them clumped together for your group to AoE them down
but I have to agree Templar tanks are way Cooler (more hipster)
DK is hands down the best tanking class in the game, despite the Templar's healing abilities and utility. Here's a few reasons why i believe this, which many would agree upon:
1. Igneous Shields: Despite the nerfs to this skill in terms of group utility, it's still a must have for any DK tank and a skill that's highly appreciated by any group player. Compare this to the Templar's Blazing Shield which in itself is good, but doesn't really benefit your group.
2. Talons: I know, this is really only good in trash fights but definitely speeds everything up since it roots enemies in their place, making it easier for damage dealers to take them down.
3. Tanking passive: Increased damage you can block is the first passive off the top of my mind, very useful.
4. Resource management: The DK, when built correctly, has incredible resource management even with the latest update changing sustain. Helping Hands passive gives back stamina every time we use an Earthern Heart ability, and guess what?
We're gonna spam Igneous Shields a lot = Stamina loss while block solved. Battle Roar gives back huge amounts of resources when using an Ultimate ability, and guess what? A DK is usually built towards generating a lot of Ultimate.
5. Group utility: DK's have a quite a few options when it comes to buffing your group or debuffing enemies, with Igneous Shields, Noxious Breath and Choking Talons being a few examples.
6. DK's just have great synergies between skills: The DK's class skills and passive just synergize so well with each other, and with other skills in other skill lines. Needs stamina for blocking a bosses heavy attack? Cast Igneous a few times and you're back on your feet. Low on health, like really low? Cast Green Dragon Blood for a massive heal and a massive boost to your healing received. These are just a few examples among many.
I could go on and on about why the DK makes the best tank, but I'd encourage anyone to try them out and just enjoy the feeling of being virtually unkillable, except for in vet trials of course which are a different story.
DK is simply stronger in Tanking. He can pull enemies and get less damage with blocking. He restore ressources just with his ult. Its just that he is the superior tank in Game
The resource management of a Dragon Knight trumps any healing a templar can do because "perma-blocking" provides so much damage mitigation. That helping hands passive, along with battle roar allow DKs to tank extremely hard hitting opponents indefinitely, and without assistance.
If you are looking to PvE tank at a very high level, then there is no doubt that DK is better.
All that being said, templar is still an option for mid level PvE and PvP tanking, and can be a lot of fun for dungeons, etc.
Templars have exactly 2 passives that are useful for tanking. One of the least favorable classes.
