You do get an apartment to start off with. One per faction if you have multiple characters and do the quest. Imagine a prison cell, and there you go.

Lets face it housing will not fit the needs for everyone, there will be players that just get lost in the decoration and building of things in their housing zone, seen some cool arenas built by players, there could be dueling matches held there, you don't need a house to play the game it is just something else to spend some time on, with the lack of content at the moment I build piles of rocks for something new to do :)

Yep, it's a teeny tiny inn room, but if all you want to do is plunk down a crafting station, it's enough.

Personally, I'm one of the people who will be getting a lot of use out of housing, because I'm a character-driven roleplayer. I love the idea of buying each of my girls a small house and decorating it to their individual taste. It gives each character a footprint in the world... a feeling like they live and belong there, instead of just being tourists dropped out of the sky.

I understand people who look at housing and don't see the appeal. You don't feel the need to have your characters set down roots like I do. And that's okay. But for me, decorating each house gives me something to work toward... a longterm goal that appeals to me the same way achievements, max-level gear, and being Emperor appeals to other people.

The fact is that the "use" is really just to act as a gold and time sink. Yeah, you can duel, set up crafting stations, or check your DPS on the test skeleton, but those strike me as more like concessions than they are things Housing is based around. Rather, the purpose of housing is to act as a vehicle for the furnishing and decorating system. For more creative or immersive players, this is a really fun system to play around in, because once you have the furnishings, you can place them in all sorts of neat ways and make neat things out of them. That's the primary purpose of housing.

If that doesn't appeal to you? No problem: you're just not that type of player, then. Everyone plays their own way. If housing doesn't appeal to you, don't worry about it. Or maybe spend the 15 minutes it takes to get the free quest apartment, then play around in that to see if it appeals to you. You may be pleasantly surprised... but if not, no harm done, and you can go back to enjoying whatever it is you like to do in-game.
    Living vicariously through my characters.

    My Girls:
"If you were trapped in your house for, say, a year, how would you pass the time?"

Nephikah the Houseless, dunmer assassin: "I suppose I could use the break. I have a lot of business holdings now that need management."
Swum-Many-Waters, elderly argonian healer: "I think that I would enjoy writing a memoir."
Silh'ki, khajiit warrior-chef: "Would this one be able to go outside, to the nearby river? It's hard to fish without water!"
Peregrine Huntress, bosmer hunter: "Who is forcing me to stay inside, and where can I find them?"
Lorenyawe, altmer mechanist: "And why would I want to go outside in the first place? Too much to be done in the workshop."
Lorelai Magpie, breton master thief: "I'd go nuts. Lucky for me, I have a little experience sneaking out!"
Rasheda the Burning Heart, redguard knight: "I would continue my training to keep my skills sharp."
Hex-Eye Azabi, khajiit daedric priestess: "I suppose it would be lucky, then, that I built a shrine to Mephala in my backyard."
Yngva Stormhammer, nord bandit (reformed...ish): "I hate being inside even when I'm not forced to be. GET. ME. OUT."
Madam Argentia, vampire dunmer aristocrat: "I suppose it would be more of the same. I have a rather... contentious relationship with the sun."
Mazie gra-Bolga, orc scout: "Uh... I'd have to house train my bear..."
Felicia the Wanderer, imperial witch-for-hire: "What Lorelai said."
Calico Jaka-dra, retired khajiit pirate: "This one would like a rest from her grand adventures. Her jewel shop runs out of stock!"
Shimmerbeam, blind altmer psijic: "Provided that I am confined to Artaeum, I do not think I will want for things to occupy my time."
Shauna Blackfire, redguard necromancer: "Sounds like paradise. I hate people."
Kirniel the Undying, cursed bosmer warrior: "I would feel useless, not being able to fight."
Echoes-from-Dragons, argonian who thinks she's a dragon: "All the better to count my hoard!"

(Signature idea shamelessly stolen from Abeille.)

I really don't see a point of spending so much gold or crowns on houses, they have no use except you know the feeling of having a house. All the crafting stations can be found for free in every city and not many people are really gonna visit you in your house because there is just no point to it. The training skeleton is an ok bonus which was needed but it can made in the smallest house to the biggest.

If the houses are away from popular places there is no point to go there, just porting for no reason.

I guess Guilds can have their guild manor just as a luxury and then guild members will actually meet there, but for individuals it feels kind of useless.

Is there something I am not seeing about housing?

you can use the chair and table and bed and turn on lamps and off. you can place the banker there, but can not use guild bank. no storage.

Well I'll be getting all the free rooms and all the cheaper houses for the single purpose of some free fast travel. They will remain empty except for a target skeleton if I can ever get one for a sane price. I won't be spending a single crown on anything housing related unless it's a target dummy.

All the rest of the effort that ZOS has put into housing will be largely wasted on me, a bit sad really...

You play house with them. You decorate them go out into the world and find somebody to bring back and then proceed to wow them with your mad in game prowess.

Personally, mine will mostly be a log out spot. I just hope to god we are not subject to the disconnects after choosing our character, like we are when we log out of highly populated times during rush hour.

I also see some of the manors as being really good for weekly guild dueling tournaments. Floating duel platforms with high falling "ring out" penalty, even multiple layered ones that change weekly. I think there could be some real creative platforms made.

Personally, I'll at least get the cheapest house for the target dummy alone. I may also get set crafting stations for some of the sets I use the most depending on how much time is actually required to obtain them. I also know some people who plan on buying the largest houses to use as a guild hall.

    You could also do this:

LOL at the people calling it a 'creative' outlet. Go play Rift and tell me how ESO housing compares. Not even in the same universe. And the excuse of 'yeah but its ELDER SCROLLS housing' is a cop out. NOTHING about any of them screams ES. Just generic lifeless instances which even when decorated dont have a lot of life either.

But you get a place to duel, craft and a dummy as people said. Thats about it. Should have at least offered a place to double enlightenment or double the rate heat and bounty decay. But they either didnt think of these basic concepts or are trying to figure out ways to monetize them.

I don't see free Fast Travel as a great benefit from housing, since we already have that through guilds, friends and groups. I very rarely pay to travel to a wayshrine. I was going to get Hundings Palace, I can easily afford it. But I think I'll stick with the free spaces until I learn more about Master Writs and furniture crafting.

There wasn't a whole lot of effort put into it considering that every single house and every single furnishing is an existing asset.

I like housing, but it's really just a quick stopgap patch to keep people busy until new content arrives.

@Prof_Bawbag I'm still going to try to stay positive but I have to agree they are really out of touch sometimes- when they first said no storage- I was so confused. [I understand how massive housing is going to be- with an editor etc. But I felt like a statement they were going to add storage in the future might have soothed a lot of people's desire to NOT be interested in housing at all]
Not the housing so much, but the frost staff tanking thing almost broke me of my atempts at positivity. Lol

Player housing is something that interests most MMO players. This is after all an MMO-RPG, I honestly don't understand what people get out of a game like this if they aren't the least interested in dabbling in RP.

Player housing done right is something to look forward to and so far Homestead looks pretty on point from what I've seen. I'm also one of the rare players who only has 2 characters and therefore doesn't care about extra storage.

As stated above, if you aren't a player who'll get a kick out of housing, so much so that you feel the need to open a topic like this...don't buy a house.

For me personally, it will be fun to acquire furniture and decorate my home the way I see fit. I'm not going to be buying a large house or a manor, just a small or medium house which will be easier to furnish and most if not all of my furniture will be acquired via in-game accomplishments and gold rather then the Crown Store so I actually feel like I'm accomplishing something.

Literally only for the skeleton dummy if you care about how much damage you're dealing. That's it. That's all the practical function you get in a house.

Stupid idea not to include extra storage; I doubt anyone at ZOS even plays the game.

I mean, I do plan on getting a manor, but that's just for RP purposes, but that's pretty much the entire point of housing for now.

People keep saying they make good guild halls, but I don't see how.

    1) They have a player cap of 24 for the largest. So, 5% of your maxed membership guild can attend a function.

    2) They have no way to access the guild bank, so any event that involves funds (like an auction) would be pointless and worse than doing it in a city/bank.

    3) The item cap makes doing something creative (Like a giant arena) almost impossible or at the very least comes at the expense of any regular decorations and usefulness.

    4) Each attunable crafting stations is only good for a single overworld table, 3 of which are needed for each set, so you would have to fill your property with over 100 crafting tables to give your members a reason to craft at the hall instead of out in the world.

    There. Is. No. Value. Here.
