Do you think ZOS should eliminate animation cancelling?

    When ZOS embraced animation cancelling, it should have also been documented. It is crazy that such an important mechanic is not taught to new players. It is not at all intuitive.

    Like Valve provides for new Dota 2 players, there should be a tutorial that teaches animation cancelling.

    This really should be done. Such a vital part of the game. If you aren't animation cancelling in eso you aren't doing it right despite whatever you may think.


    I don't understand how the majority of eso players on the forums vote against animation cancelling. It's literally how you play the game haha and, honestly it makes it funner. Setting up some delicious combo on someone is always awesome.

    Pvp is already being dragged through the mud by all the bs recently. Removing animation cancelling would probably kill it off, imo.

    we all know which issue it is.

    as long as I could be interrupted while instant casts, I don't want to see any changes. Not to mention long time cast of every skill (which can be simply skipped). people don't want to improve, but blame others. position ftw.

    May I know which ISP and connection package 'tier' you're subscribed to? Sounds to me like you have a really, REALLY bad connection considering you're playing from within the States. My typical ping range on good days is between 240-300ms and I'm in the Oceanic region.
    It's quite disturbing how close my ping range and yours are. Better get your connections checked and/or subscribe to a better ISP/package.
    EDIT: Forgot to add. The ping rate you mentioned on your side sounds very similar to when I was back in the UK (goes from 140-240). That said, I'm pretty confident that you can get your ping rates below 100ms with better subscription pack from your chosen ISP.

    And. Go figure.

    This game has *** servers. I have 1 gigabit Internet (live in Toronto) and get 100-140 ping in this game.

    I have 20-40 ping in every other game I play.

    This is just untrue and trollish . Several people here , non casual have posted they are great at it but still don't like it . Some people enjoy seeing combat . Some people don't enjoy watching there character wiggle and land 3 attacks . For some , it has nothing to do with capabilities .

    The other people in this thread posting How To videos are at least being sensible to others that do not want animation canceling . Although I'm pretty sure most of know how by now . Learning has nothing to do with it as many know . It's a preference and also a mechanical issue in PVP .

    Its not possible to do a tutorial to teach it.

    It is entirely based on ping. The timing for someone with a steady 75ms ping, a steady 300ms ping and an unsteady 60-200ms ping are all different.

    At best they can make Lyris or Prophet say, "You may cancel animations of certain instant attacks with other attacks. Timing is an entirely random dependent upon your system, hardware, and physical location."

    No newbie will be able to figure that out until they check it out on youtube and then tinker around until they get it right.

But as said before, the Devs said it was allowed and that it was being kept in the game.. as a designer it rubs me in all the wrong places, and I love seeing games with smooth animation, and epic spell casting :)

    I agree, it feels very unnatural and i don't like it when my characters looks like she is having a spasm of some sort.

    I know how to animation cancel, but one major problem with animation cancelling is not related to player skills. It is rather the hardware environment s/he is in. For example, my lag never allows me to do proper weave because half of the time medium weave desto does the animation for me but the ball doesn't fire out. And sometimes block cancelling works at 0.2s and sometimes at 0.8s. Getting rid of animation cancelling will at least provide a fairer competing field for people with different internet connection situations. Players who don't lag will benefit the most from animation cancelling. (such as no matter how hard I try my characters can't do things as smooth and animation cancelled as those VMA youtubers)

    Animation cancelling is a measure of ones skill, technical ability and dedication to the game because it takes many hours of practice before it becomes second nature to ones play-style. In my opinion, those players whom have perfected the skill are True Artists. I can fully understand why AC is not popular with many players because there is no quick-fix for it.

    I have been practicing AC on the PTS Skelleton Dummy and the results have been amazing. My damage output has doubled and trippled on my low dps Master Crafter. The improvement has carried over to the Live game. I still have a very long way to go before perfecting the skill but thank-you to all the people whom have posted videos on the Art and shared their expertise and knowledge.

    Thank-you @Liofa for including the video clip at #441. I had not seen this before but having done so, I will soon be able to sleep peacefully at night (in my self-crafted, four-poster canopied bed) in the knowledge that my integrity has not been compromised by cheating. o:)

    Yes get rid of it, it is just not healthy for the game, and if it is going to be a permanent part of the game then zos should have or should, include it in the stating tutorial on how to play, I don't care about how many youtube video are out showing, I want to an official tutorial made by zos. I wonder how many people that started this game early on and never even knew about animation canceling, I can do it I just choose not to, it just makes me feel dirty, if zos had the full on embrace and tutorial then I might not feel like I am cheating when I use it.

    It is part of the problem in this game along with no soft caps or hard caps, automated game play macro's are against the TOS to bad they are not enforcing the policy there would be a lot those people that hit you with 5 special in a second that would have a time out. It is hard to enjoy this game anymore with all the cheaters, exploiters, broken game mechanics, intrusive add-ons, poor balance, the game is feeling less like an Elder Scrolls game and more like a first person shooter, this is not mmo combat. :(

    So, I am one against animation cancelling. I just hate it (that I cannot get it right) that someone actually hides his attack by cancelling an attack or skill.

    But I also agree the combat will be very clunky if you cannot cancel a light or heavy attack or a spell.

    But instead of making animation cancel not possible (ie. clunky combat) they should make it IF you cancel an attack, you do no damage. I do not care about PvE and they can let it in their with their burning DPS races. It should be fixed for PvP.

    Yes, It might be a l2p issue since I suck at animation cancelling. But for me it also just feels wrong. Cancel for me means you decide you do not want to do it.

    But there are 2 groups here:
    - people who do not want animation canceling (30%)
    - people who do want animation canceling (70%)

    Animation canceling is already here so how can they ever get this right. Removing it just makes the other 70% mad.

    Edit: I made up these numbers 70 and 30% though.

    Animation cancelling is probably the only reason I am still playing this game. I hated it first and thought it was unnatural but after a long time of mastering it, and seeing my opponents doing it as well, I can see it actually helps add skill and fast pasted action into what would otherwise be a increasingly dumbed down game.

    To all the people saying get rid of it, if ZOS had included a tutorial in the wailing prison when the game launched, would you still have a problem with it? For a lot of people it seems that you're just mad that it is considered an unintentional feature.

    Hmmmm maybe. I just makes more sense if you either attack or use a skill. Not both "simultaneously". But i think it should depend on the skill maybe. After a light attack any offensive skill should should be queued, or the light attack is cancelled and the skill takes over. But dodge rolling, blocking and other defensive stuff that requires timing to survive should be allowed, not for offence.

    Different strokes, I guess. The combat was slow. I played as a jedi healer and with a tank companion it was so easy. I liked bounty hunter just because the animations were cool looking.

    Current compromise feels clunky and bad, convert back to what it was before change.

    Besides, go play SWTOR and you can feel how wgreat the game is without animation canceling, there will be ability delays and light/heavy attacks would not work well with that system. Allready with the compromise, the attacks wont always happen or they happen but animation does not play, sometimes abilities wont fire after blocking because the system is in compromise mode. Combat was more fluid before it was changed and besides, its your fault if you cant execute it well, it has always been in these types of games that if some people cant use some attack system well and are not good enough, they ask game to be made easier to make themselves feel better.

    Especially blocking is very unresponsive right now, if i have an attack wwith charge and see opponent making a heavy attack, i have to wait for the damned animation to finish, no way to cancel the execution right now. Sometimes even heavy attacks are too long to change to block. The focus here, should be to make blocking as responsive as it can be and also, make animations wwork better so that if you block while you are doing uppercut for example, the large weapon would not suddenly vanish mid air and poof to block position, there needs to be animation between these two states.

    Every few months, a new generation of baddies foray into the competetive scene and make this post, and then they are met by a chorus of last generations baddies that never got good. And every few months I'm forced to make this same rebuttal.

    The main counter argument against animation cancelling is moot. Animation Cancelling does not allow people to bypass intended game mechanics.

    You cannot cancel skills with a cast time. The intended balancing via cast times is in tact regardless. You can only cancel instant cast abilities, which unless my understanding of the English language is wrong, means the abilities fires off the very moment the button is pressed. So with that being the case, animation cancelling doesn't let you bypass cast times. Rather it removes the 'fluff' between animations to allow for more fluid, connected, and skillful game play. It simply allows for better control of your characters and an added layer of skill.

    After nearly 3 years, the removal of this core mechanic in this game would fundamentally alter combat and make the game much more clunky, much less dynamic and much less skillful. Which is probably why the people who cry about it cry about it.

    That combat is outdated and boring, get over yourself and your misconception of what animation canceling is. Every game with fluid combat features some form of animation canceling, even newer games like Overwatch or Paragon incorporate some form of animation canceling into their combat system to help the combat feel less robotic. Games like Super Smash Bros use some forms of animation canceling as well, people enjoy the responsive and fast combat.

    ESO is plauged by such a misinformed and casual player-base, people who have literally zero understanding of the game are free to come onto the forums and shoot their opinions around like they've been playing the game since launch.
