New Motifs! What's the point if we can't use it?

I love the motif diversity that ESO provides, but crafted sets are just too weak to bother. On the other hand, the sets that drop from mobs and bosses usually look awful and there is no way to change their style. That's why most players run around in costumes, trying to hide their ugly armour sets.
Can we get an option to re-style the armour using something similar mimic stones?
I've bought so many amazing motifs from crown store before I realised how crappy the crafted sets are....

ZOS has literally no idea of what they're doing with motif.

It was cool at launch and then once many reached VR15-16 it was odd.

Somehow I often feel I'm missing something cause with 9 trait crafting the dungeon drop sets are sometimes in motif that aren't released that look waaay better.

    Same for Trials.

You'd think that the housing update of attuned crafting stations would attune not just crafting stations but allow ppl to mimic armor and weapon drops when they added mimic stones.

So we have two things that would offer value to motifs but neither are being used.

Even worse they are adding more motifs in the crown store and some don't have style mats and only use mimic stones

    Disagree.

Let's just align motif with changing appearance via style stones and maybe a base material

    Disagree.

Lets just go back to crafted being superior to dropped (or even equal) and then you make choices and deal with them.
Tenesi Faryon of Telvanni - Dunmer Sorceress who deliberately sought sacrifice into Cold Harbor to rescue her beloved.
Hisa Ni Caemaire - Altmer Sorceress, member of the Order Draconis and Adept of the House of Dibella.
Broken Branch Toothmaul - goblin (for my goblin characters, I use either orsimer or bosmer templates) Templar, member of the Order Draconis and persistently unskilled pickpocket
Mol gro Durga - Orsimer Socerer/Battlemage who died the first time when the Nibenay Valley chapterhouse of the Order Draconis was destroyed, then went back to Cold Harbor to rescue his second/partner who was still captive. He overestimated his resistance to the hopelessness of Oblivion, about to give up, and looked up to see the golden glow of atherius surrounding a beautiful young woman who extended her hand to him and said "I can help you". He carried Fianna Kingsley out of Cold Harbor on his shoulder. He carried Alvard Stower under one arm. He also irritated the Prophet who had intended the portal for only Mol and Lyris.
    ***
Order Draconis - well c'mon there has to be some explanation for all those dragon tattoos.
House of Dibella - If you have ever seen or read "Memoirs of a Geisha" that's just the beginning...
Nibenay Valley Chapterhouse - Where now stands only desolate ground and a dolmen there once was a thriving community supporting one of the major chapterhouses of the Order Draconis

    Motifs are pointless now.

We should be allowed to change the style of any dropped armor set to any style known on the character.

I love the look of some of the crafted sets but it gets ruined by having to run OP proc sets to be competitive.

This. I think every armour/weapon should be morphable to any style using something similar to mimic stone or something similar. A year ago, I just loved spending my time in cities, looking at awesome combinations of armours people come up with. Now it's all the same due to few ugly meta sets and costumes that people try to hide it with. Come on ZOS!

I disagree with the the mimic stone exclusively. We should be able to just do it like with the Imperial style or at the very minimum a style stone in game if the style has it.

I've always felt the same about these two things, but I've come to terms with the way that ZOS does things. They want to cater to casuals, since they're making revenue for people who a. buy the game and play for a month or b. buy the game play for a month each time a dlc comes out (while subbing).

So the concept of hard to obtain 9 trait crafting and nirnhoned items goes against that mission. Casuals will feel intimidated by a system that it will take investment to achieve and will be less likely to play and pay.

Yup it's a shame. As long as the money roles in they're happy. The game will slowly start to die and the flow of money will drop. Maybe they'll improve on things like this if my theory kicks in.

I view the need for a way to change dropped set appearance, and the need for improved crafted sets/buffs to crafting, as two separate issues.

We need both of these things.

Crafted sets need buffing up. Period. Whether they eventually add newer, better sets or not, the existing ones have fallen on the side of mediocrity when compared to some of the dropped sets. This needs to be fixed.

Dropped sets, regardless of the state of crafted sets, even if they buff/add to crafted sets are hideous at best in 99% of the cases and anyone willing to invest the time, gold/money, and effort into maxing out crafting has more than earned the right to fix the fugly gear they own. (I really don't care if crafters can fix other people's fugly armor, though it would be a boon to crafters, because everyone is capable of leveling their crafting skills and earning/finding/buying the motifs themselves.)

Regardless of which problem is fixed, the other is still going to exist. What we don't need is one gear type negating the other.

    *Edit to add:

They need to stop adding motifs into the game until they sort this issue though, as they're only making it more divisive and urgent.

I treat motifs like a mini game, part collection, part gold sink. They just aren't very practical for crafting. We need a preview window (and not rely on internet and forum previews). Plus gold mats are way too expensive to craft in new styles when current gold armor is a good set. I hate that zos is forcing more and more of crafting into the crown store. My answer lately is the Nordic Bath Towel....one size fits all. :D

    @newtinmpls

There's nothing wrong with crafted gear tho.
The context of crafted gear is done by research tiers. So for each tier, the sets are better.

Heck some ppl pick Julianos which isn't even 9 trait.

Making crafted gear the best isn't the best direction at all because why do content if everything is craftable.

Then ppl will go back to being bored and running around gathering mats or trading for mats.

No point in doing content cause u don't need the drops other than jewelry but if the content requirement doesn't lead to drops....u don't need gear.

Drops have to always be better than crafted items.

The motif issue is that the drops don't give opportunity to the treasure hunting for motif which usually come from new content

That's where the mix match is.
Motif does nothing other than crafting.

Crafting isn't how you get more motif
Motif drop from content so motif need to provide opportunities to use on dropped gear

I've felt it should go (from lower to higher):
    World drops
    Veteran Dungeon Drops
    9 trait crafted sets
    Trial sets.

The best should come from the difficult content that not everyone does. The second best should be craftable (and encouraging) then the group easily done content.

I do combine a crafted set (Julianos) with dropped stuff, but I haven't used any of the newer (or not so new anymore) motifs either, since the drop rate is frekking horrible.

Some of these are really hard to get, even if we do want to use them. Order of the Hour and that kinda stuff...

I still think, finishing a motif should unlock costumes for that motif style. Of course, I also think we should be able to apply costumes to our weapons (not changing the type, but changing their appearance) and that we should be able to dye weapons. So, go figure.

They seriously need to rethink the whole thing and stop with making new ones for now.

They used to be cool, because you can control how you look and stuff. Now they are just annoying, most players can't keep up, I'm sure. Getting them feels like a chore now if you are an achievement collector.

Motifs were awesome a long time ago. It was exciting when you found a new book. I started being less impressed when they changed to pages. Pages are the worst. It takes roughly forever to get everything. And there are 50kabillion motifs now. I am more behind on motifs than I want to be. But I don't want to fit in motif farming into the time I have to play. So once in a while, I go buy a bunch that I am missing from guild traders.

But like others have said, crafted gear is only good for so long. Once you are done leveling, you do not want crafted gear. Its not good enough anymore. So I have wasted so much time. I spent practically forever researching traits. I have spent a lot of gold on motif pages. Gold that had I NOT spent it, I could buy at least one manor first day of housing. And for what? What good do they do me now?

I agree. I really hope they do something to address this. We've asked for it time and time again, and the mechanics at their most basic level are already in the game (e.g. 'Change to Imperial Style' Option). But there are lots of other ways they could address this too. Lots of options. Let's hope they work with at least one.

Maybe they could add a tab on the crafting stations. Use a specific item bought from the new vendor for Master crafter writs and some style materials, and you could change the style of the item and make it bound to account after the process.
