And that's what I'm getting at Yolo. That second video you can see no one has all kinds of different armor sets with all kinds of procs, or huge unbalancing stat boosts, or weapon and spell damage increases. Besides maybe cloth vs. plate, the only thing that could cause lag there was rendering all the players, and perhaps the particle effects from skills going off.

A lot of things have changed since then beyond gear and its hard to determine what was the root cause from the outside looking in without falling into the "correlation does not imply causation" trap.
For example, at that time in the game, we also didn't have any disgusting blobspam tryhard guilds that think they are good just because they can bunch up in a group and spam aoes. The server used to lag really hard whenever a specific group of awful people were nearby.
I would love a game without those mechanics, and without them. But I don't know if they were the cause or just a symptom. It could also be that people just didn't play like that back in the day, and that the developers never anticipated the effects of the blobspam playstyle on the servers. If that is the case, then the game was never "lag free" people just didn't know how to lag it.

My only Christmas Wish List is this:
1) No more long load screens - this is main thing that makes me logout and stop playing
2) Remove implosion - only thing that ever gets killing blows on me and it's a freaking passive. QQ L2P I know, I don't care. This is worse than proc sets.
3) Make Eye of the storm morph blockable, leave the other morph unblockable but negateable.
Everything else can stay the same and I'd be fine.
I swear every time I get zerged down Implosion is what ended up killing me. I know I would have probably died anyways, but the fact that implosion gets the killing blow always makes me mad. Especially when the implosion was the only damage ability the guy gets on my death recap.
RNG in PvP is bad, agreed.
Remove implosion, burning light, evasion and any other dice rolls.
Replace with more predictable mechanics.
